Listen to this chapter:

Before they knew it, the first day of college arrived. After much coaxing from Kayla, she insisted Myra and Dexter accompany her instead of letting Eugene take her.

"Mom, Dad, you promised me that no matter how busy you are, you would always put your work aside to be with me. You've always done that since I was little. How can you go back on your word now?" Dexter and Myra exchanged glances, unsure how to respond. They had initially planned to accompany Felicia, who was staying at the dormitory and had much to settle; they were genuinely concerned about leaving her alone.

Kayla seemed to sense their hesitation. With her head down, she feigned disappointment. "It's okay. I can go by myself. You two should go with Felicia. I don't mind..."

As the beloved daughter of the Fuller family, Kayla had been doted on since childhood. From preschool performances to every major event, Myra and Dexter had never missed a single one, especially something as significant as her first day of college. Yet this time, they were leaving her behind. The contrast was striking.

Watching Kayla hold back tears while forcing a smile, Myra's heart ached. She offered a compromise: "How about this? Dad can go with you, and I'll go with Felicia. That way, it's fair."

Kayla pouted but reluctantly agreed. "Okay, fine..."

Once Kayla had calmed down, Myra knocked on Felicia's door. The room was eerily empty. The bed was neatly made, and there were hardly any belongings; it looked as though Felicia had never been there. The maid said, "Mrs. Fuller, Ms. Felicia got up early and went to college by herself."

Myra frowned. "We promised her last night that we would go with her today..." Despite saying this, Myra felt relieved. After all, she had promised Felicia that she and Dexter would accompany her, but circumstances had shifted. It was unclear whether Felicia had anticipated this change and left without saying goodbye.

"Let's head out too," Myra said, linking her arm with Dexter's and wrapping her other arm around Kayla. Kayla glanced back and asked innocently, "Mom, where's Felicia?"

"Felicia has already gone to college."

"Oh..." Kayla said with a smile. "Don't worry. Felicia is independent and capable. She can handle anything on her own. Unlike me, I get lost easily and can't read people well at all. Last time, I almost got scammed out of my money..."

Myra couldn't help but laugh as she gently poked Kayla's forehead. "From a young age, you've always made people worry. It's impossible not to care."

Kayla stuck her tongue out playfully. After all, the child who cried got the candy. Even parents couldn't help but favor the one who appeared weaker and more vulnerable.

She maintained her persona. "Mom, when are we visiting the Lawson residence? We should clear things up with Mr. Lawson Senior, or else rumors will spread, and it won't be good for Felicia."

"Tomorrow." The engagement issue needed to be resolved quickly.

Chapter 43

Dexter took the lead. "I'll have my assistant prepare some gifts. We can all go together and have a proper discussion with Mr. Lawson Senior."

"Okay."

When Felicia stepped onto campus, a few upperclassmen were directing new students. Upon seeing her, one girl nudged the boy beside her, and they exchanged glances, whispering to each other.
