No one saw Stephan's actions clearly, and no one anticipated he would actually go through with it. By the time everyone reacted, a flash of silver streaked through the air. Felicia, closest to him, lunged forward to stop him, but even so, Stephan's usually calm, deep eyes were now bloodshot and red. His fair face was splattered with blood, giving him an eerie, demonic appearance.
Imogen, unable to see, heard the gasps and rushing footsteps of the Russell family's men. "Mr. Russell!" "Mr. Russell! Where's the doctor? Hurry, come quickly!" The air was filled with chaos.
Imogen froze, dread washing over her. Trembling, she grabbed Johanna's hand. "What happened? Tell me!"
Johanna, pale with fear, swallowed hard. "Imogen... Stephan... He... he used a knife... to cut his own eyes. There's so much blood."
"What?" Imogen was speechless. How had things escalated so drastically? She had only meant to vent her frustrations, to force Stephan to choose between her and Alicia. Even if her words were harsh, he shouldn't have resorted to such drastic measures.
Overwhelmed by pain, anger, and regret, Imogen trembled. The knife she held against her neck clattered to the ground. She stumbled toward Stephan, but Stanley caught her before she fell. Clutching his arm, she asked, "How is he? How is Stephan?"
Stanley glanced back. "Ms. Russell, Mr. Russell took his eyes out for your sake."
Imogen broke down, screaming at Stephan, "You fool! What are you doing? What are you trying to prove? Are you trying to kill me?"
Stephan was unconscious, his eyes closed, blood still flowing beneath his dark lashes. The camp doctors arrived, but specializing in Imogen's care, they lacked expertise and were too frightened to treat Stephan's bleeding eyes—it looked like permanent blindness.
Not all the Russell men knew of Felicia's medical skills, and those who did were hesitant to trust her. Felicia ignored their doubts, shouting, "Bring water—clean water, now!"
Andy raced to the supply area, only to find the purified water depleted. Cursing, he grabbed several canteens. "Ma'am, this is disinfected, boiled spring water. I don't know if it'll work..."
They had no other choice. Felicia poured the water over Stephan's eyes and face. Her expression was so intense that even the usually talkative Stanley remained silent. Andy, worried but hesitant to interfere, could only watch in stunned silence.
Gradually, they realized Felicia was flushing out Stephan's eyes. He had tried to blind himself, but Felicia had partially blocked the blow. The knife, however, was contaminated with rainforest plant sap, causing Stephan's unconsciousness and bleeding. The bleeding was a result of the poison.
