Imogen commanded coldly, "See him out!" The nearby guards immediately stepped forward, and Kerry was promptly ejected. Silence returned.
At that moment, Johanna approached. From a distance, she'd seen someone being escorted out. Her gaze flickered as she pushed open Imogen's door.
"Imogen, who was that? Looks like he was kicked out. What was he here for?"
Since the rainforest incident, Johanna had changed. She was less close to Imogen. While her demeanor remained warm, a subtle distance had grown between them.
Imogen snapped out of her thoughts. "Oh…" Johanna didn't dwell on it. Imogen had always been completely trustworthy, sharing everything. Relieved, Johanna smiled. "Imogen, you should rest. I'll come by tomorrow to help with the baby."
As she turned to leave, Imogen remarked, "Johanna, you've been in remarkably good spirits since we returned from the rainforest."
Johanna froze, her expression stiffening momentarily. Quickly regaining composure, she smiled. "I guess I am. It's all because you safely delivered the baby. Why do you ask, Imogen?"
"No reason. Seeing you happy makes me happy too." Imogen chuckled. "Johanna, could it be that you're seeing someone?"
Since returning from the rainforest, Imogen had noticed Johanna spending less time with her, often going out without explanation, but always returning cheerful—behavior typical of someone dating.
Johanna initially hesitated, then gave a small, shy smile. "You could say that."
"What do you mean by that? Either you are or you aren't," Imogen raised an eyebrow. "Is he unwilling to take responsibility for you?"
"That's not it, Imogen. It's just… not the right time yet…"
Feigning embarrassment, Johanna lightly stamped her foot, clearly unwilling to continue. She smoothly changed the subject. "By the way, about Stephan's blindness and coma… I heard it was due to poisoning?"
The mention of this silenced Imogen. On the day she gave birth, Felicia had disappeared. Stephan, frantic, searched the hospital. Surveillance footage revealed Felicia's whereabouts, but then he collapsed. The doctors attributed it to poisoning.
The toxins damaged not only his optic nerves but were progressively destroying his nervous system, ultimately leading to his coma.
Every time Imogen thought about it, overwhelming guilt and heartbreak consumed her. If not for her relentless demands and threats, forcing Stephan into an impossible choice, he wouldn't have chosen to protect Felicia by harming himself. One line haunted her: "Imogen, I'll repay your sight with my eyes, alright?" The memory ached.
They were biological siblings, their closest family after their parents' passing. How had things escalated so drastically? Imogen had tried to keep Stephan's condition quiet, but the news spread regardless.
