The old woman signed, "My granddaughter has been kidnapped! Please, can someone help me find her? She was taken by bad people! My granddaughter just turned eighteen. She went out with her classmates and on her way home, she said she was going to buy me some desserts, then she was kidnapped! I saw it! I was on a video call with her when it happened! I saw someone cover her mouth and drag her into a car!"
The old woman's distress grew, culminating in uncontrollable sobs and trembling. Even those who didn't understand her language stopped laughing. Kind bystanders offered support while others called the police. The crowd became chaotic. The camera zoomed in on a photo in the old woman's trembling handsโa picture of a sweet, beautiful young woman with a radiant smile.
Felicia enlarged the photo and froze. This womanโฆwasnโt she the one from the remote hospital's parking lot? The young woman who'd offered assistance and even called a doctor? It was Jennifer! Missing? Kidnapped?
The video ended. Felicia lowered her head and ate a bite of dessert, the sweetness momentarily easing her heavy mood. Scarlet offered her more. "Want more?"
Felicia shook her head. She messaged the video uploader, requesting the old woman's address and the kidnapping location. The response surprised her: Seldvale. What a coincidence.
The uploader included a pre-written message: "Someone called the police; a sign language interpreter was used. The old woman filed a report and provided leads. However, there's no evidence supporting her claim of witnessing the kidnapping during the video call. There are no surveillance cameras or witnesses in the area. She's been missing less than twelve hours. That's all I know."
Felicia replied, "Thank you." Having a time and location made the case easier. Her fingers danced across the tablet screen as she hacked into the local surveillance system. Scarlet could barely follow.
The screen split into multiple windows showing street feeds near the reported location. Scarlet whistled and leaned in. Felicia quickly skimmed the footage. The rapid visuals almost gave her a headache, but she spotted Jennifer in one of the lower windows.
She rewound and reviewed the footage, pausing and zooming in. Ahead of Jennifer, a young man's shadow was faintly visibleโpossibly her boyfriend. Jennifer was on a video call. Her boyfriend walked ahead; a car sped toward them, and Jennifer vanished. When her boyfriend turned, she was gone.
Felicia tried to capture the car's license plate, but before she could, garbled text appeared, and the screen went black. The surveillance footage had been deliberately deleted.
