Chapter 635
With heart-pounding tension, the door burst open with a loud bang, splintering wood and casting shadows of indistinct figures. Jennifer squeezed her eyes shut, swinging the iron rod wildly, striking blindly. She kept her eyes tightly closed, unwilling to face what was about to happen. The other bound women in the corner screamed, their shrill cries almost deafening. Benoite felt hopeless, her mind fixed on taking her captors down with her. "I'll fight you to the bitter end!" she vowed.
As she tried to lunge forward, her arm was cradled by a pair of warm hands. A clear, pleasant female voice rang out. "It's alright. Don't be afraid."
Jennifer froze, then slowly opened her eyes. Instead of the ugly, scarred, black-robed figure she expected, she saw a delicate, strikingly beautiful face. Jennifer almost thought she was dreaming, blurting out, "How could it be you?"
Felina smiled, gently pried Jennifer's fingers open, and took the rusty iron rod. "It's okay. Don't be scared. I'll get you all out of here."
Jennifer had so many questions, so many doubts. Yet, she recognized Felina; they had met in a hospital parking lot. Jennifer had tried to help the injured Felina, only to nearly be strangled! That was their only previous encounter, yet here they were again. Jennifer wanted to ask more, but this wasn't the time.
Scarlet and the other mercenaries had already begun untying the other kidnapped women. Their earlier screams, initially born of fear, had quickly transformed into cries of joy upon their release. They were pale, gaunt, and disheveled from lack of proper food and care. Two were gravely ill, too weak to stand. Big Guy and another mercenary carried them.
"Let's go!"
As Felina prepared to lead them back the way they came, Jennifer nervously grabbed her hand. "What about the cameras overhead? Will they cause trouble?"
Indeed, a surveillance camera blinked red in a corner. Jennifer worried the camera had captured Felina and the others. If their captors were part of an organized group, they might seek revenge.
Felicia gently patted Jennifer's hand, then glanced at Scarlet. Scarlet picked up Jennifer's iron rod and, with a fierce swing, knocked the camera down.
Jennifer's eyes brightened. Without hesitation, she followed Felina. The traps had been mostly disarmed. Aside from the uneven ground and the damaged iron door, the immediate danger seemed past. Escape felt imminent. Jennifer was on the verge of tears from sheer relief.
However, celebrations can be premature. Just as they were about to exit the dark bomb shelter, a cacophony of footsteps echoed from outside.
