Caesar stopped speaking, as if someone were squeezing his throat. He wiped cold sweat from his forehead and murmured, “There’s no cure.”
Maurice’s gaze sharpened. The pressure was so intense that even Maurice’s men fell silent. The silence was deafening.
“There’s no cure?” Maurice repeated. After a long pause, he laughed. His chilling gaze locked onto Caesar as he said slowly, “I’ll give you one chance to correct yourself. How do you cure it?”
Caesar nearly choked. This was bad. Maurice was being unreasonable, demanding a solution that didn’t exist. To be honest, Maurice had never been this extreme, even when wheelchair-bound. But now, he demanded an answer, allowing no refusal.
Caesar asked, “Mr. Glovers, who is infected with the Heart Eater? Is it you? Hold out your hand, and I’ll check your pulse.”
Mid-sentence, he saw Maurice’s impatience and a terrible realization struck him. Could Maurice be helping Felicia from Khogend?
Caesar’s expression shifted. One moment, he looked like he was choking back tears; the next, he seemed torn and hesitant to speak. Before Maurice lost patience and dismissed him, Caesar sighed helplessly. “There’s only one way.”
“And what’s that?” Maurice pressed.
“Using twin venomous creatures to transfer the Heart Eater to another person. The second host will bear all the effects and control of the Heart Eater,” Caesar stated solemnly. “There’s no other method.”
Maurice sighed, his eyes sharpening with amusement as a relaxed smile curled his lips.
Caesar added, “Once the transfer succeeds, the Heart Eater’s control will double in strength. There will be no way to remove it unless the host dies!”
“Make the preparations,” Maurice’s indifferent tone made Caesar wonder if he had even grasped the severity of the situation. Was Maurice serious? He was about to install a ticking time bomb inside himself! There was no off switch, no fuse, no way to dismantle it. Once activated, the infected person would lose all control over their mind and body! Even if someone with immense willpower retained a sliver of awareness, the pain alone would be unbearable. The agony of the Heart Eater was like being torn apart from the inside. No one could endure it!
Caesar wanted to warn him again, but Maurice had already dismissed him. Caesar groaned and stormed off to retrieve the twin venomous creatures. Ironically, he only had a ready supply because of Felicia. She had used them once before to make Maurice suffer. That incident had enraged Maurice, and he ordered people to scour the land for them until he obtained two pairs. Now, those creatures were cultivated and asleep. All that was needed was to awaken and feed them for a few days to alter their function before use. Previously, Felicia modified the twin venomous creatures to share pain; when one host suffered, the other felt double the pain. But the pair Caesar developed had their symbiotic bond removed. They now functioned as a transfer mechanism.
Caesar sighed. “All that’s required is to send one of the venomous creatures into the target’s body through an external wound. The Heart Eater will then devour the twin venomous creature. Once consumed, the twin venomous creature will transfer the Heart Eater’s control and effects to the new host. In simple terms, you… will bear her suffering.”
