Chapter 15

Bianca blurted out instinctively, โ€œWho else could it be if not Dani?โ€

As soon as she said it, her face went pale. She stared at Stephen in disbelief. โ€œYou mean Abby? Thatโ€™s impossible.โ€

Stephen didnโ€™t want to believe it either, but he couldnโ€™t keep it from Bianca. โ€œMom, Abigail said she got her acceptance letter from Vanguard University three years ago, right before she was sent to prison.โ€

Biancaโ€™s body went limp, and she collapsed backward.

โ€œMom.โ€ Daniella came running from downstairs, her face streaked with tears as she cried out for Bianca.

The whole place turned chaotic. The family doctor stepped out of the room and said, โ€œMrs. Gibson fainted due to emotional stress. Itโ€™s nothing serious.โ€

Stephen, waiting outside, finally let out a breath. Daniellaโ€™s voice was choked as she asked, โ€œCan I go see her now?โ€

The doctor nodded. โ€œYes, Ms. Gibson, go on in.โ€

Daniella rushed in, her face filled with worry and panic.

Stephen saw the doctor out, then turned to glance at Abigailโ€™s door, still shut tight. He thought, โ€˜Mom fainted because of her, and thereโ€™s no way Abigail didn't hear all that noise. Sheโ€™s deliberately not coming out.โ€™

That thought made the guilt Stephen had been feeling harden back into cold indifference.

Meanwhile, Abigail was typing on her phone, lines of code flashing quickly across the screen. Soon, the display began to shift in color as her fingers moved. She had her headphones on, completely focused.

The next morning, Abigail arrived at the office early. She didnโ€™t like staying at Gibson Villa any longer than necessary and preferred being at the company.

As work hours approached, the Development Lab slowly filled with people. Since Abigail sat in a corner, no one noticed her unless they walked right up.

When Leon showed up, he actually thought Abigail wouldnโ€™t come to work today.

He had been waiting by the elevator for quite a while, holding several large shopping bags filled with gifts for Abigail.

Everything in those bags was handpicked after Leon had consulted his baby sister the night beforeโ€”he made sure to get things girls usually liked.

He thought, โ€˜Itโ€™s already work hours, and Abigail still hasnโ€™t shown up?โ€™

Leon didnโ€™t expect that the moment he walked in with the bags, heโ€™d see Abigail already sitting in a corner.

โ€œAbigail, when did you get here?โ€ Leon asked, surprised and delighted.

Abigail looked at him, puzzled. โ€œI got here at seven. Why?โ€

Leon fell silent, thinking, โ€˜Sheโ€™s really that dedicated? Here at seven? No wonder I couldnโ€™t find her at the elevator.โ€™

โ€œItโ€™s nothing. These are for you. See if you like them,โ€ Leon said as he handed her the bags.

Abigail frowned slightly. โ€œThanks, but I donโ€™t need them. I didnโ€™t do anything to deserve this.โ€ She didnโ€™t want to take advantage of anyone.

Leon let out a dramatic groan. โ€œYou saved us a huge headache yesterdayโ€”howโ€™s that not worth a thank-you? This is me showing appreciation. Just take them. Timโ€™s gonna be looking for you any minute now.โ€

Speak of the devilโ€”Timothy showed up right then to find Abigail, striding in just in time to see the pile of snacks. His face darkened instantly.

โ€œLeon, what are you up to again? Didnโ€™t I say no snacks in the Development Lab?โ€ Timothy demanded.

Leon looked innocent. โ€œThey havenโ€™t been opened yet. You canโ€™t blame me, Tim.โ€

Timothy couldnโ€™t be bothered to argue. He had more important things to deal with. โ€œAbigail, come to my office.โ€

Originally, heโ€™d asked Leon to deliver the message, but Timothy didn't follow through. So Timothy decided to come in person.

He was all smiles, practically fawning. โ€œAbigail, please, have a seat. Do you want coffee?โ€

Abigail glanced at him, noting the sudden change in his attitude. โ€œMr. Newman, if youโ€™ve got something to say, just say it.โ€

She wasnโ€™t interested in coffee. Her stomach was messed upโ€”caffeine only made it worse.

Timothy didnโ€™t mind her indifference. In his eyes, talented people were allowed a bit of attitude.

โ€œAbigail, did you write that program you gave Leon yesterday yourself?โ€ Timothy watched her expression closely.

Abigail gave a calm nod. โ€œYes.โ€

Timothyโ€™s breathing hitched. โ€œYouโ€™re sure youโ€™re not lying to me?โ€

Abigail was puzzled. โ€œWhy would I lie?โ€ She thought, โ€˜What would I even get out of lying to him?โ€™

Seeing the confusion in her eyes, Timothy chuckled. He thought, โ€˜Good. As long as itโ€™s real.โ€™

โ€œGreat. Iโ€™m glad itโ€™s not a lie. Abigail, with your skills, have you ever considered leading a small team? Maybe taking on a team leader role?โ€

Bewildered, Abigail thought, โ€˜Arenโ€™t big companies supposed to be hard to get promoted in? Donโ€™t people normally have to wait their turn?โ€™

โ€œMr. Newman, how much more does a team leader make?โ€ Abigail asked.

She felt like it was a professional question. After all, she didnโ€™t have much money right now.

If Abigail wanted to cut ties with the Gibson family, sheโ€™d need to buy her own place. Plus, she still wanted to visit Wyatt from time to time. All of that cost money.

Timothy hadnโ€™t expected that question. Honestly, most people wouldโ€™ve been over the moon to be offered a promotion on their second day and wouldโ€™ve said yes right away.

โ€œIโ€™m not sure, but it should be a decent bump,โ€ Timothy finally said. The company had pretty good benefits and a solid pay structure. โ€œAs long as you do the job well, the salary wonโ€™t disappoint.โ€

Abigail didnโ€™t react to Timothyโ€™s vague promises. She wasnโ€™t interested in nice wordsโ€”she wanted real numbers.

โ€œMr. Newman, Iโ€™ll think about it,โ€ she said. She figured asking Timothy wouldnโ€™t get her anywhere. Sheโ€™d have better luck checking with someone else.

Leon stared at her in shock, completely floored. โ€œYouโ€™re saying Tim asked you to lead a team?โ€

Abigail didnโ€™t get why he looked so worked up. After a second, she said, โ€œI havenโ€™t agreed yet.โ€
