Listen to this chapter:

He thought about these simple, homey meals, then about Sebastianโ€™s cooking. Something about it all felt instinctively meaningful.

After dinner, Warren went to check out Sebastianโ€™s newly arranged study, while Abigail and James cleared the table together.

โ€œAbby, do you ever feel out of place living with Seb?โ€ James asked quietly as he stacked the plates.

Abigail chuckled, โ€œWho wouldnโ€™t get used to a life of luxury?โ€

James glanced at her, noticing the way her eyes dropped. โ€œThen why move here?โ€

Abigail paused for a moment before answering. โ€œThis place is like me, simple and full of inconveniences, maybe even a few odd habits. I want to see if he can adjust to all of it.โ€

She wasnโ€™t just forcing herself to endure. This was her reality.

The food she cooked was ordinary, her knowledge of dishes was limited, and she wasnโ€™t accustomed to finer details, like wiping her hands after handling fish.

Sebastian didnโ€™t mind yet, but she wasnโ€™t sure whether he would always be so easygoing.

James nodded thoughtfully. โ€œLiving together before marriage is smart. Better to find out now if you donโ€™t click than deal with surprises later. It saves a lot of trouble.โ€

โ€œMarriage is about adjusting to each otherโ€™s habits, about patience and compromises,โ€ Abigail said as she carried a plate toward the kitchen. โ€œAt first, when youโ€™re new in love, you pretend everythingโ€™s perfect. But after a year or two, reality hits.โ€

James nodded in agreement, following her into the kitchen.

For Sebastian, this was a real test.

โ€œWill you tell him?โ€ Abigail asked, opening the dishwasher.

โ€œTelling him what? Iโ€™m just trying to understand. This is your thing. It has to evolve naturally for the best,โ€ James said, tossing silverware into the dishwasher.

โ€œHey! They go here!โ€ Abigail corrected, lightly tapping his hand.

James froze for a moment, then laughed. โ€œYou really do treat us like close friends.โ€

Abigail was used to playfully hitting Sebastian. She blushed a bit. โ€œSebโ€™s been a handful all day. Iโ€™m used to it. Does it hurt?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a guy. Can handle a little tap! If I couldnโ€™t, thatโ€™d be pathetic,โ€ James grinned. โ€œNow, show me where the knives and forks go.โ€

Abigail picked up the utensils and placed them neatly in the compartment. โ€œSee? Fits just right.โ€

James crossed his arms. โ€œLooks like Sebโ€™s got his chores lined up. Heโ€™s going to have to help you out.โ€

โ€œHe knows what heโ€™s doing,โ€ Abigail said confidently.

While the dishwasher ran, James helped Abigail take out the trash.

Soon, Sebastian returned and gently ushered James out.

โ€œI got this. You go relax,โ€ Sebastian said. Even though theyโ€™d cooked together tonight, most of the dishes were Abigailโ€™s.

โ€œWhen the dishwasherโ€™s done, put the dishes away and wipe the counters,โ€ Abigail instructed before heading out.

She was tired and just wanted to sit down.

Sebastian stayed busy in the kitchen for quite a while before finally emerging.

Full and content, James and Warren were ready to leave.

โ€œTake the trash downstairs for us,โ€ Sebastian said, handing a bag of kitchen scraps to James near the door.

James made a small noise of surprise but took the bag without question.

After all, rich kids like him probably never had to deal with trash before.

Warren said, โ€œFrom now on, itโ€™s just you two. Youโ€™ll have to handle everything yourselves. Good luck.โ€

He patted Sebastian on the shoulder.

โ€œI will. You guys drive safe,โ€ Sebastian said, watching them put on their shoes.

Once they left, he closed the door behind them.

Abigail wrapped her arms around Sebastianโ€™s waist from behind, resting her head on his back. โ€œLong day? The food wasnโ€™t that great, huh?โ€

โ€œHome cookingโ€™s simple but satisfying. I liked it. No complaints,โ€ Sebastian said honestly.

He really did think Abigail was a great cook.

โ€œI was worried you wouldnโ€™t enjoy it,โ€ she admitted softly.

Sebastian smiled. โ€œLook, thereโ€™s barely anything left on the plates. If it was bad, weโ€™d have leftovers.โ€

Abigail glanced at the empty plates and let out a breath she didnโ€™t realize she was holding.
