Listen to this chapter:

โ€œYou saying itโ€™s not stolen doesnโ€™t make it true. If thatโ€™s how it works, then I could say that gemstone chess set isโ€ฆโ€

Abigail ignored her. She picked up one of the chess pieces, her voice cool and clear. โ€œIf your eyes donโ€™t work, look harder. The Moore familyโ€ฆโ€

Her slender fingers held the piece steady under the lights of the venue. Beneath the gemstone chess piece, a blooming dahlia was etched intoโ€ฆ

Someone gasped. โ€œIs that the Dahlia Bloom gemstone chess set!โ€

โ€œIt really is,โ€ another voice replied. โ€œThatโ€™s not the one the Moore family owns. Dahlia Bloom is the signature work known worldwide. This oneโ€™s actually worth much more than the Moore familyโ€™s.โ€

As the crowd began to shift again, someone snapped, โ€œYouโ€™re all saying this set is worth more, and you still believe a girl like Abigail could have gotten her hands on it?โ€

Another person muttered, deep in thought, โ€œIf I remember right, Dahlia Bloom ended up with the Robinson family in Chesterwickโ€ฆโ€

The second that name was said, silence swept through the room. The Robinsons were old money in Chesterwick, the kind of name that put even the most elite on edge. Just hearing it changed the way everyone looked at Abigail.

They mightโ€™ve believed she could somehow know someone from the Moore familyโ€“but the Robinsons were out of the question.

Josephine let out a cold laugh. โ€œSo after all that, the gemstone chess set really was stolen. And she actually had the nerve to gift it? Thatโ€™s beyond embarrassing!โ€

Her voice, arrogant and full of malice, cut through the crowd. Hearing her words, Abigail turned to look at Josephine.

Daniellaโ€™s brows knit like she was worried, but there was a flicker of amusement in her eyes. โ€œJosephine, donโ€™t say that. Abby probably just didnโ€™t know. Maybe she just really wanted to give Mr. Fletcher a gift.โ€

Josephine curled her red lips. โ€œEven so, she canโ€™t go gifting something stolen. Thatโ€™s just dragging the Fletcher family down with her, making fools of them all.โ€

Bianca and Gabriel both looked stormy. It wasnโ€™t just the Fletchers being embarrassedโ€“they were, too.

โ€œHurry up and get over here,โ€ Gabriel growled through gritted teeth, glaring at Abigail. To him, she was nothing but a disgraceโ€“someone heโ€™d never acknowledge as his daughter in front of others.

He thought, Figures. She wasnโ€™t raised by us, of course she canโ€™t compare to Daniella.

But instead of being angry, Abigail started laughing. Her delicate features shed their usual indifference and came alive. โ€œLooks like the problemโ€™s not just with your narrow minds,โ€ Abigail said, not angry. โ€œSpreading false rumors is a crime. And youโ€“yeah, youโ€“Iโ€™ve got you all memorized.โ€

She didnโ€™t hesitate. She pulled out her phone to call the police. The people she looked at panicked immediately. Someone rushed forward to grab her phone. โ€œWe didnโ€™t spread any rumors. We were just guessing!โ€

This wasnโ€™t serious enough for jail, but a trip to the police station wasnโ€™t out of the question. None of them wanted that.

โ€œAbigail, youโ€™re just feeling guilty. If youโ€™ve got nothing to hide, prove that the gemstone chess set wasnโ€™t stolen,โ€ Josephine smirked. Abigail had called her out directly, but she figured Abigail wouldn't really make the call. Her voice dripped with smugness.

Daniellaโ€™s gaze shifted. Her voice turned gentle. โ€œAbby, blowing this up wonโ€™t help anyone. I know you just wanted to impress Mr. Fletcher, but giving someone a stolen gift really isnโ€™t right. You should just return it as soon as possible.โ€

โ€œNeed a hand, Abigail?โ€ Samuel came over with a grin.

He thought, They might not know, but I sure do. My cousin personally catered straight to him to win her over.

Someone said, โ€œArenโ€™t the Marsh family and the Robinsons related by marriage?โ€

Another added, โ€œMr. Marsh, that Dahlia Bloom Abigail stole is part of Emily Hintonโ€™s collection!โ€

Samuel glanced over, his smile vanishing completely. โ€œThatโ€™s a nasty way to put it. Why is it so hard to believe the Robinson family gave that to Abigail?โ€

Everyone froze in shock. Josephine blurted out, โ€œNo way. Thereโ€™s no way Abigail knows anyone from the Robinson family!โ€

Samuel gave a slow, knowing smile, like he was the only one in the room who actually saw things for what they were.

โ€œThatโ€™s enough. I believe Abigail,โ€ Adam said, cutting through the noise. People knew better than to cross him, so the room quieted.

He continued, โ€œAbby, Iโ€™m tired. Iโ€™m going upstairs to rest. Will you come with me?โ€

Abigail could see the fatigue on his face. After a momentโ€™s thought, she shook her head. โ€œMr. Fletcher, Iโ€™ll stay down here. Iโ€™m leaving tonight.โ€

Adam sighed inwardly. He knew she wasnโ€™t happy here. He nodded. โ€œThen let Ralph drive you.โ€

Abigail didnโ€™t agree, but she didnโ€™t refuse either. She watched Adam go upstairs. The crowd still hadnโ€™t dispersed.

Abigail glanced coldly at them. If this hadnโ€™t been Adamโ€™s birthday party, she wouldnโ€™t have let them off so easy.

โ€œWhat are you still standing there for? Get over here,โ€ Gabriel called out as he glared at her, more irritated than before.

Abigail knew why. The Gibsons never did anything unless it benefited them.

But she lowered her eyes, thinking. Is that guy really from the Robinson family in Chesterwick? Should I ask?

At the thought of that man, a trace of warmth softened Abigailโ€™s otherwise frosty expression. She ignored Gabriel and walked straight toward the door.

โ€œAbby, Dadโ€™s calling you.โ€ Daniella stepped in her way, a flicker of panic in her eyes.

Abigail said coldly, โ€œMove.โ€

Daniella bit her lip. โ€œAbby, you should explain the gemstone chess set to Dad. Donโ€™t let Mom and Dad keep worrying.โ€

Gabriel looked at Daniella with obvious fondness, but when he turned to Abigail, his face was full of anger. โ€œWhatโ€™s with that attitude? Canโ€™t you learnโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLearn what? How to take over someone elseโ€™s place?โ€ Abigail sneered.
