Chapter 103: Did You Just Hit Me?
Caleb set his fork down and slowly rose from his seat. “Well then, enjoy the food without me.”
As Caleb began to walk away, Deborah panicked. “Caleb, your sister didn’t mean it. Don’t take her words to heart.”
Before Caleb could respond, Yelena’s anger flared. “Mom, how can you say that? Think about it. Ever since Caleb returned, he hasn’t lifted a finger to help. Instead, he seems intent on going against us at every opportunity. Just yesterday, he embarrassed us at the Sherman family’s gathering! If Dad hadn’t found the stolen goods Caleb hid in the ceiling, our ties with the Sherman family would have been destroyed!”
Deborah froze for a moment. She had heard about Caleb’s thievery. The night she returned, Raquel had already told her about the mistakes Caleb had made over the past few days. Her account was entirely truthful. Of course, she was mad. Despite being the matriarch of the Quixall family, she still struggled to tolerate the Sherman family’s arrogance. Yet, angering them was another matter entirely. While the Sherman family couldn’t match the financial prowess of the Quixall family, a bitter feud between the two families could lead to unpredictable consequences.
Caleb had just been released from prison, yet he had already stirred up such a huge mess. The moment Deborah learned about it, she felt an overwhelming urge to confront him. But her own plans demanded her focus, and she refrained from taking any action against him. When Yelena resurrected old memories, the anger Deborah had buried deep within her resurfaced in full force. Suppressing her true feelings, she let out an awkward laugh before her expression transformed into a carefully composed smile. “This is just how Caleb is when he’s with us. He’s so full of energy. It makes me happy. Why would I ever be upset with him?”
Yelena was dumbstruck. “Mom, are you—”
A sharp slap interrupted her words, leaving a clear imprint of five fingers on her cheek. In utter disbelief, Yelena cried out, “Dad, did you just hit me?” George had never raised a hand against her, regardless of the severity of her mistakes. Yet now, he had struck her all because of Caleb.

Yelena lifted her chin, revealing her face, severely swollen from being hit. “Why should I? I didn’t say anything wrong! Mom has completely lost it for spewing such ridiculous nonsense!”
A flicker of hesitation crossed George’s eyes, but his voice remained firm. “Your mom is absolutely right. Caleb is the most important member of our family, and no one is allowed to speak ill of him!”
Yelena was livid. “Dad, I think you’ve lost your mind too! Caleb has turned our home into a complete mess!”
The sharp clack of her high heels echoed as she angrily spun on her heel and stormed off. Her departure was punctuated by the thunderous thud of her footsteps on the staircase.
Deborah was deeply saddened. “George, you didn’t have to be so harsh. Yelena didn’t mean any harm. She just doesn’t fully grasp our ways.”
“Hmph, if I don’t put her in her place, she’ll walk all over me! Let’s eat!” The couple ate in silence. From the corner of his eye, George noticed Caleb heading upstairs. “Where are you going?”
“Yelena must be upset. I’m going to comfort her.”
“Just come back. She’ll understand her lesson after this!” George pointed to a seat and forced a small smile. “Sharing a meal with your mom and me matters more. Sit with us. Let’s talk.”
