Chapter 114: He Is Nearing Death

The tall security guard frowned, his eyes filled with anger. “Ms. Sherman, we’re just doing our jobs. Mr. Quixall gave strict orders, so don’t make this difficult for us.”

Gianna glared at him. “I have urgent business with Mr. Quixall. If you delay me and something happens to his son, can you bear the consequences?” Her tone made the guards unsure.

The Quixall family had two sons—the eldest, unloved and constantly scorned, and the youngest, treasured like the apple of their eye. If their interference led to harm befalling the precious younger son, how would they answer to George?

The tall guard hesitated. “Ms. Sherman, please wait here. I’ll be right back.”

Suppressing her impatience, Gianna reluctantly agreed. “Hurry. Your young master’s life hangs by a thread.”

The tall security guard didn’t dare delay and quickly rushed into the mansion. He opened the door and entered, only to return moments later. Thinking something had gone wrong, Gianna asked anxiously, “Well? Did he agree?”

When the guard shook his head, her heart sank. She made up her mind. “Then I’ll force my way in!”

The tall security guard hastily stopped her. “Ms. Sherman, I wasn’t finished. Ms. Levinson intercepted me inside. She said she’d speak with you on Mr. Quixall’s behalf and not to disturb him over such trivial matters.”

Gianna shot him an annoyed glance. He hadn’t finished his words quickly enough.

True to his word, Raquel soon appeared, sauntering over with infuriating leisureliness. While Caleb fought for his life in the hospital, here she was, moving as though she had all the time in the world. Gianna’s nails dug into her palms as she struggled to contain her fury.

Patience, she reminded herself. Losing her temper now would only backfire spectacularly. Gianna set aside her pride, her voice soft as she asked, “Raquel, how have you been lately?”

Raquel’s chin lifted haughtily. “Drop the act, Gianna. It’s been some time since we last met. Let me guess, Mr. Sherman finally locked you up, right?”

Gianna’s jaw clenched. “You always were the clever one. Spot on as usual.”

Raquel gave her a disdainful look. “Do you really think everyone is as foolish as you? Instead of living comfortably as a privileged young lady, you insist on chasing after convicts. What a disgrace to the Sherman name.” Her tone dripped with such condescension that one might mistake her for the head of the Sherman family.

Gianna mentally repeated her mission like a mantra, quelling the rage simmering in her chest. “You’re absolutely right. I was blind before, not realizing you had my best interests at heart all along. But I’ve seen the error of my ways. From now on, I’ll keep my distance from Caleb. Surely that counts for something?”

Raquel eyed her suspiciously. “Did you hit your head on the way here? Why are you acting strangely today?”

Gianna merely smiled, letting the silence stretch. Raquel shuddered. What is going on? Had Gianna’s wires crossed so badly that even basic logic escaped her now?
