Listen to this chapter:

Gianna had kept vigil by Caleb’s side throughout the night. The following morning, seeing that he was still asleep, she decided to step out and buy breakfast. While she was at it, she thought of picking up a bouquet of flowers, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Driven by her concern for Caleb, she returned after only being away for fifteen minutes. As she neared the ward entrance, she stopped in her tracks; voices could be heard from inside. She immediately dropped what she was holding and sprinted into the ward.

Upon seeing a familiar figure hurling themselves at Caleb, sobbing uncontrollably, she reacted instantly, her hand gripping tightly on the person’s shoulder.

“Mrs. Quixall, what are you doing here?”

The day before, no one came to visit Caleb. But once he was no longer in critical condition, members of the Quixall family arrived. Hence, Gianna was certain they were up to no good. No matter what, before the perpetrator was identified, it was crucial not to let any suspects get close to Caleb. Otherwise, there was a real possibility that he might never wake up again.

Deborah wiped away her tears. “I was busy yesterday and didn’t get a chance to visit Caleb. Early this morning, I was really worried, so I thought I’d come over to check on him.”

Seeing that Deborah didn’t pose any threat, Gianna reluctantly let her guard down.

“Mrs. Quixall, I can take care of Caleb alone. You can go back now.”

Her tone was unbearably cold. The day before, Raquel had caused quite a commotion at the Quixall residence. She simply refused to believe that Deborah didn’t hear anything. Moreover, Deborah didn’t come out to help her. Not only that, the Quixall family didn’t even bother to inquire about Caleb’s condition. They simply stayed in their mansion, continuing with their lives. Given their reaction, there was no need for them to check up on Caleb. After all, they didn’t care about him in the slightest.

Upon witnessing Gianna’s indifferent demeanor, Deborah couldn’t help but be taken aback. She quickly realized what was going on and hurriedly explained, “Gia, I was busy at home yesterday. I had no idea that Raquel was bullying you. After that, when your father came to settle scores with Raquel, I didn’t stop him upon learning the whole story. I gladly let him take her away. I heard that both Raquel’s hands were crippled, while you’ve only lost one. No matter how deep the resentment, seeing Raquel in such a pitiful state should quell it, right?”

She was already aware of what had happened to Raquel. When she checked her phone this morning, she saw the news on her social media feed: Exclusive scoop! The daughter of the Levinson family provoked Ms. Sherman, and in response, the head of the Sherman family ruthlessly crippled both of her hands! By then, the news was practically common knowledge within their social circle. Some claimed that Raquel had it coming, while others accused the Sherman family of acting with impunity. Following this incident, the relationship between the Levinson and Sherman families was completely ruined, each suffering significant losses.

Gianna was filled with regret, yet he also felt that the situation had escalated to that point due to Raquel’s arrogant and domineering behavior. After all, the Levinson family wouldn’t have suffered if Raquel hadn’t insisted on taking advantage of the situation to torment her. Nevertheless, involving the Sherman family truly made her feel guilty. That said, what had happened, had happened. Regretting it wouldn’t make any difference. The only course of action was to strive to grow stronger and endeavor to cover the losses suffered by the Sherman family in another form. Only then could this matter truly come to a close.

Deborah was taken aback by Gianna’s words. “Gia, how could you speak to me like that? I’m doing this for your own good.”

Gianna’s gaze was indifferent. “So, when you couldn’t spare the time to visit Caleb, was it also for his own good?”
