Chapter 160: He Knows
Gianna knew that once Phillip made up his mind, it was absolutely impossible to change it. Therefore, there was simply no room for negotiation about going abroad. Phillip wasn’t persuading her; he was informing her.
A surge of anger and sadness welled up within her, and she cried out, “Dad, you’re too domineering! I don’t want to talk to you anymore!” Her departing figure brimmed with a sense of finality, and not once did she look back.
Norman glanced at Gianna, then at Phillip, suddenly unsure what to do. At that moment, Norman was overwhelmed with guilt. Had he told Ms. Sherman about this beforehand and let her prepare herself mentally instead of hiding it from her, would the argument tonight have been avoided?
“Mr. Sherman, should I go ahead and—”
“No need. Let her calm down on her own for a bit.”
With his hands behind his back, Phillip swiftly left the living room. However, his unsteady footsteps still revealed his inner turmoil. Norman let out a helpless sigh. “Let’s hope this father and daughter can reconcile soon…”
The moonlight spilled coldly onto the earth, as if draping a thin veil over it. For reasons unknown, that night was unusually silent. Even the typically noisy cicadas had ceased their chirping.
The following day, after Caleb had breakfast, he saw a message from Chelsea. The message read: Yelena wants to see you. Should we let her in?
After the events of the previous day, Chelsea had issued an order requiring anyone who wished to meet with Caleb to get her approval first. Therefore, for Yelena, meeting Caleb was not an easy task.
Caleb replied: Let her in. It’s perfect timing. I also have some things I’d like to ask her.
After a while, someone knocked on the door. Caleb raised his voice and said, “Come in.”
A woman with vibrant red waves of hair walked in.
“Cale, come home with me. Mom and Dad miss you, and so does Jesse.”
Caleb sarcastically asked, “Do you guys miss me that much?”
The Quixall family had no hand in that matter.
Feeling dejected, Yelena said, “Gale, you can’t blame us for this. It was you who first disregarded our relationship. If we hadn’t resorted to these measures, how could you possibly have returned?”
Caleb looked at her with a cold gaze. “The more you resort to underhanded tactics, the less likely I am to return.”
What do they take me for? Am I a slave, summoned at a wave, dismissed at a beckon? After enduring so much at the Quixall residence, I’ve finally managed to escape. Why on earth would I willingly throw myself back into the lion’s den? Does the Quixall family think they can force me to return and conform by using some lowly tactics? They couldn’t be more wrong. Even during his time in prison, Caleb never once begged for mercy. It was even less likely that he would plead with those despicable individuals.
Seeing him so unwilling to take advice, Yelena couldn’t help but feel somewhat annoyed.
“Caleb, don’t be so ungrateful! I’ve already humbled myself and begged you. How dare you push your luck?”
“Am I pushing my luck?” With resentment simmering in his heart, Caleb said coldly, “Ever since I returned, you haven’t looked at me kindly. I know that’s to be expected. After all, I don’t share the Quixall family’s bloodline, yet I’ve reaped the benefits for twenty years. However, why did you target me? Don’t use Jesse as a shield. This is clearly your own personal agenda!”
Yelena could only feel the chill seeping into the palms of her hands. How did Caleb come to know about that incident? Who told him?
