Chapter 182: Why Did You Betray Me?
Jesse’s expression was vacant, but a brewing storm was hidden deep within his eyes. What? Did I hear it correctly? My fiancée has been seeing someone else for several years? And even before Caleb was imprisoned, the two of them already had something going on?
Jesse felt a bit dizzy, instinctively rubbing his temples. “Agnes, are you sure about what you said? Could it be a prank video someone else posted?”

Chapter 181: Five Whole Years
After a while, Raquel arrived. She didn’t come alone; her parents, Ivan and Shreya, were with her. All three wore grim expressions, looking particularly unpleasant, especially Raquel. Her eyes were swollen from crying, with remnants of tear streaks still visible on her cheeks. She looked pitifully endearing.
“Mr. Quixall, Mrs. Quixall, I really didn’t do it. I’ve been wrongfully accused!”
She harbored intense resentment in her heart. Would I have ended up like this if Joseph hadn’t been so foolish? He’s even more foolish than Caleb. A few words from others were enough to force the truth out of him. I really must have been blind back then! How on earth did I end up choosing him?
George looked at her coldly. “Enough. Say no more. Tomorrow, you’re coming with me to hold a press conference to call off your engagement with Jesse!”
Raquel collapsed in tears. “Mr. Quixall, you can’t do this to me! I’ve loved Jesse for a full five years, and every minute, every second of those five years, my feelings have been genuine. I’ve never once let him down!”
George scoffed. “You’re genuine? I suppose you’re genuine about Joseph, too, aren’t you? All that comes out of your mouth are lies. How much can I really trust you?”
Raquel’s heart sank. She was no longer able to defend herself. Judging by the look on George’s face, it seemed that no matter what, he would never believe her. All this is Caleb’s fault! Had he not insisted on revealing this matter in front of such a large crowd, would I have faced such a predicament? Her hatred had reached such an extreme point that her breathing gradually became rapid, nearly causing her to faint.
Ivan stepped forward, helping his daughter to her feet. “Mr. Quixall, you can’t just believe in one side of the story! At the very least, you should hear what my daughter has to say and give her a chance to explain herself!”
George furrowed his brows in annoyance. “The facts are right in front of us. What else could you possibly explain?”
Although Shreya was typically timid, she summoned up the courage for her daughter’s sake and said, “Mr. Quixall, times have changed. Nowadays, young people advocate for the freedom to love who they choose. As parents of two children, we should allow them to communicate freely, instead of recklessly interfering and potentially ruining their happiness. Don’t you agree?”

George had calmed down slightly and said to Agnes, “Go and call Jesse over. Remember to explain the situation to him clearly. Don’t exaggerate or dramatize things to avoid upsetting him and causing him to end up in the hospital again.”
Agnes nodded repeatedly. “Understood. Understood.” She quickened her pace and soon found herself at Jesse’s door. She gently knocked on it. “Mr. Jesse, it’s me. Mr. Quixall asked me to relay some information to you. Are you still asleep?”
“No, I’m awake now.” Jesse opened the door, his gaze gentle. “Agnes, what does my dad want to tell me?”
Agnes glanced around the room. “Mr. Jesse, may I come in to speak?”
“Come in,” he responded. As soon as Jesse stepped aside, Agnes walked in. She nonchalantly took a seat, completely oblivious to the deep furrow in Jesse’s brow.
“Mr. Jesse, brace yourself. What I’m about to tell you is a matter of great importance.”
Jesse gave a nod, settling himself at the edge of the bed. “I’m listening. Go on.”
Agnes stated, “There’s a video going viral online right now. In the video, Mr. Joseph claims that he and Ms. Raquel had been together for several years. Even before Mr. Caleb was imprisoned, the two of them were already in touch.”
Agnes replied, “Mr. Jesse, even if I were courageous, I wouldn’t dare to deceive you! Mr. Doyle personally said this in the video, and Mr. Caleb also appeared in it. How could there be any falsehood?”
With his eyes closed, Jesse reached out his hand. “Where’s the video? Let me take a look.” Agnes dug out the video from earlier and handed over the phone. Joseph’s brazen voice promptly echoed from within.
“What did you expect me to do? She came to me willingly. Was I supposed to just ignore her? I have far more tricks up my sleeve than you, so it’s no surprise she chose me over you!”
Without a doubt, this was Joseph’s voice. The owner of this voice had once shown him kindness and concern, even staying up all night in the hospital to look after him. However, this person was now recklessly hurting him, even intending to make this matter known to all.
When Jesse recalled Joseph saying how Raquel ended up in his arms due to Jesse’s incapabilities, he felt a raging fire consuming his heart. His forehead throbbed with tension. “Where’s Joseph? Where is he? I need to see him!”
Agnes was taken aback by his demeanor, speaking hesitantly. “He… He hasn’t arrived, but Raquel and Mr. Levinson are downstairs, waiting for you to make a decision.”
Suddenly, Jesse got up and dashed downstairs without looking back. Agnes called out from behind, “Mr. Jesse, slow down. Be careful!” However, Jesse didn’t care; in no time, he had dashed to the lower floor.
Just as Agnes had mentioned, Raquel and her family were waiting downstairs. Upon his arrival, they all looked at him with hopeful eyes, as if he were their savior.
Chapter 182: Why Did You Betray Me? (Continued)
Raquel had never seen her fiancé this furious before, which immediately threw her into a state of panic. “Jesse, I’ve been wronged! I’ve never betrayed you!”
Jesse took a deep breath. “All right. Since you say you’ve never betrayed me, I believe you. I just want to ask you one thing.”
“What is it?”
“Five years ago, when you were still Caleb’s fiancée, did you ever contact Joseph privately?”
Raquel blinked, a single tear rolling down from her eye. “No, I didn’t. I really didn’t…” She was hoping others wouldn’t see through her. However, Jesse had been living with her for five years, and during that time, they were practically inseparable every day. How could he not notice her moment of hesitation?
Filled with anger, Jesse was quite disappointed. “Raquel, I thought you were the only one who truly cared for me in the entire world, besides my mom. Yet, you’ve really let me down. It turns out you’re no different from them, after all.”
A shudder coursed through Raquel’s body, and then, tears started to stream down her cheeks. She truly regretted it. She did. Why on earth was I so infatuated, getting involved with Joseph in the first place? Otherwise, I would still be the privileged young lady of the Quixall family, basking in endless privileges and respect in the future.
