Chapter 218: Lend Me Someone
The idea was a good one, but considering the reality of the situation, Caleb had no other option but to decline.
“Let’s just forget it, Ms. Yardley. I appreciate your kindness, but I truly can’t accept.”
Chelsea was puzzled. “Why?”
She didn’t understand the reason. After all, Caleb had just been discharged from the hospital. If he were to be attacked at this point and had to be readmitted, there was a high chance he might not survive. In spite of that, Caleb was incredibly stubborn, refusing to accept her help.
“Madam Yardley’s intention was to thoroughly test me. If you were to send someone to protect me, she would think I’m going against her, which would only lead her to make life more difficult for me. It’s one thing for me to suffer, but no matter what, I can’t drag you down with me.”
Although he was rejecting her, the words he spoke deeply moved Chelsea. She was both touched and annoyed.
“You really are…” She pursed her lips, adding unhappily, “Fine, have it your way then. However, if you ever find yourself in danger, make sure to contact me immediately, understood?”
“Sure, definitely.”
Despite his agreement, Caleb was thinking to himself, I absolutely won’t. Chelsea had already done him many favors, so he knew that he had to forge ahead on his own for the rest of the journey. Always hiding behind others would only get in the way of empowering himself.
Through Chelsea’s explanation, Caleb came to understand Rob’s identity. This man had incurred a significant gambling debt and was currently being pursued by various creditors for payment; the Yardley family was naturally one of them. Rob had borrowed a hefty sum of two hundred thousand from the Yardley family’s underground money-lending business, with the agreement to repay it within three days. However, when the agreed date arrived, he not only failed to repay the debt, but he also vanished without a trace. When the Yardley family failed to locate him, Miriam was infuriated. As a result, she had no choice but to have her men hunt him down.
Caleb figured that Rob, driven to hunger from hiding, was forced to go out to buy food, which led to him being caught by Finneas. He had given himself up willingly upon realizing that hiding was unsustainable.
The issue at hand was how many people Rob had at his disposal, and what kind of tactics those individuals would employ. Chelsea had already gathered some information through her own connections, but it was far from enough. Since Rob dared to gamble, it was evident that he had friends in the same circle. Dealing with such greedy individuals was undeniably a problem. Every gambler had their own connections, and these networks often overlapped with each other, creating a complex web. It was so intricate that even the Yardley family, despite their influence, couldn’t fully track them all down.
Caleb took out the photos that Chelsea had given him, diligently searching for their information online. Before long, he had uncovered some clues. On the surface, these individuals were merely university students. However, behind closed doors, they were all incorrigible gamblers. They didn’t just gamble with their own money; they would also steal from their own family. Even their own girlfriends ran the risk of being deceived by them.
Every time Caleb thought about the moment Rob appeared, accompanied by that female university student, a shadow of gloom would flash across his eyes. That woman brought it upon herself. Even if she was deceived by her boyfriend, it has nothing to do with me. However, if I could make her suffer the pain of being exposed on the internet, that would be more than perfect.
Caleb’s lips curled into a smile as he dialed Chelsea’s number.
“Ms. Yardley, I need to borrow someone from you… Yes, a woman. It’ll only be for a few days… Oh, and there’s something else I need to tell you…”
