Revenge Forged in Prison

Chapter 98: You Must Not Share Our Conversation

Raquel had expected Deborah to confront Caleb with a heated argument over the incident. To her surprise, Deborah spoke only briefly before dismissing the matter.

“There’s really nothing here. Caleb, go back to sleep. We’ll check the other rooms instead. Perhaps Raquel was mistaken. It was dark, after all, and it’s possible she misjudged what she saw.”

Raquel, feeling anxious, tugged at Deborah’s sleeve. However, Deborah simply shook her head, signaling her not to press further.

Filled with unanswered questions, Raquel watched wide-eyed as Caleb returned to his room. As soon as he left, Raquel couldn’t hold back her thoughts any longer. “Mrs. Quixall, why did you let him off so easily? He—”

Deborah covered her mouth, leading her to a secluded spot.

“Raquel, it’s not that I don’t want to help you. But I have other pressing matters to address right now.”

Before Raquel could protest further, Deborah leaned in close and whispered something into her ear. Whatever she said made Raquel smile brightly.

“Finally! He’s getting what he deserves!” Raquel exclaimed a bit too loudly, causing Deborah to glance around nervously. Once she confirmed no one was approaching, Deborah exhaled deeply.

“Remember, you must not share our conversation with anyone, especially not with Caleb.”

Raquel nodded earnestly. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Quixall. I understand how important this is. I won’t disappoint you.”

Deborah’s expression softened as she looked at Raquel. “You’ve been through so much.”

Raquel shook her head. “This is nothing, really. Compared to what Jesse has endured, my troubles are insignificant.”

After offering Raquel a few more comforting words, Deborah sent her back to her room.

“Raquel, let’s just block the door with something tonight. I’ll arrange for someone to change the lock tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Quixall!”

Deborah watched attentively, only turning her gaze away once she saw Raquel enter the room safely.

Just then, George walked over and asked, “What happened?” He didn’t approach recklessly, as he wanted to avoid any misunderstandings.

Deborah recounted the events, then said, “I didn’t push Caleb too hard because I was worried it might upset him. Do you think I handled it the right way?”

George nodded. “Yes, I would have done the same if I’d been there.”

However, he was naturally stricter. Compared to him, Deborah’s gentler approach often made her more persuasive. The couple exchanged a glance and a smile before returning to their room together.

Over the following days, Raquel managed to steer clear of trouble, while George’s and Deborah’s demeanors toward Caleb took an unexpectedly pleasant turn. They had always looked down on Caleb, so their sudden kindness toward him puzzled many of the housekeepers. However, given the stark difference in status between them and Caleb, they knew better than to let their curiosity jeopardize their positions.

Time flew by, and a week had passed. That day, Deborah had the living room arranged with several tables in preparation for dinner. Chefs busily moved in and out, placing one delicious dish after another on the tables.

Curious to see how Deborah’s cooking had come along, Caleb stepped into the kitchen. Deborah turned to see him entering, and a wave of awkwardness instantly washed over her.

“Caleb, dinner is going to take some time to prepare. Why don’t you head back to your room and wait? Standing here will only wear you out.”

Caleb nodded and returned to the living room, sitting down for a while. However, it wasn’t long before he made his way back to the kitchen.
