Chapter 127: Jane, Don't Misunderstand
I hadn't expected Tha to show up here, much less as his volunteer. Where did this dessert craving come from? I certainly didn't expect to run into them.
"Can I sit here?" Tha asked, looking at me with a pitiful expression. It felt as though I would be the villain if I refused.
At that moment, Elsa's face lit up. She shot me a knowing glance before summoning the waiter for another chair. "I'm so glad you're here. Eating alone would have been really lonely," she added with a touch of manufactured sadness.
I raised an eyebrow at her performance, smiling slightly. "If you're lonely, why not call Jack? I'm sure he'd join you, even for a late-night meal."
Tha laughed awkwardly. "Jack has his own things to do. I don't always bother him." She stole a glance at Jeremiah, her voice softening. "And this place… this place means something different to me. Someone very important brought me here before."
As she finished, Jeremiah's expression shifted uncomfortably. His lips involuntarily curled upward. I instantly felt nauseous.
I put down my knife and wiped my mouth.
"Are you talking about your boyfriend?" I asked.
She immediately shook her head. "No, not at all. Someone very important..."
Watching them, I understood what my teacher had once said: these subtle gestures were painfully obvious. Luckily, my teacher had been understanding; otherwise, many students would have faced parental consequences.
When I remained silent, Elsa feigned concern, waving a hand in front of my face. Only when I looked up did she continue, "Jane, are you upset? Did I talk too much about myself? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I was just so happy seeing you both."
Before I could respond, Jeremiah frowned and gave me a reproachful look. "What are you doing? Can't we just have a nice meal? Elsa doesn't mean any harm."
I scoffed. "What did you say?"
My gaze locked on Jeremiah's slightly anxious eyes. "Did you forget the purpose of this meal?"
At my reminder, Jeremiah suddenly remembered his intention to reconcile with me. His expression softened. He turned to Elsa. "Jane doesn't mean anything by it. Don't take it to heart."
He then called the waiter and ordered several desserts. "These are all your favorites. Have some sweets; they'll make you feel better."
Elsa nodded, but her gaze, when it met mine, was almost brimming with provocation.
"Jeremiah, I'm just worried Jane won't forgive you. If you two fight because of me, I'd feel guilty," she said, tears welling in her eyes.
Just as Jeremiah was about to comfort her, Elsa looked up. "Jeremiah, I forgot my medicine. You have it in your car, right? Can you grab it for me?" At this, Jeremiah instinctively glanced at me.
Before I could react, Elsa gave me a pleading look. "Jane, please don't misunderstand. I just want Jeremiah to get my medicine."
