Chapter 48 Just a Sidepiece
Jeremiah shouted, “Jane! What are you doing?! I used to think nothing was going on between you two, but now I see you’ve been sneaking around behind my back. Do you have no shame?”
Frowning, I turned to meet Jeremiah’s furious gaze. Standing next to him was Elsa, looking shocked and wide-eyed.
“Jane, if nothing is going on between you and Mr. Flint, why are you acting so intimate? Don’t you know how much Jeremiah cares about you? How could you hurt him like this?”
Her voice was soft, and her words were delicate, painting a picture of Jeremiah’s heartbreak and pain. But looking at the two of them, they seemed perfectly fine to me.
Besides, Jeremiah’s sudden shift in attitude toward me was obviously because of the business deal. There was no sincerity there, just fake concern. It was all for show.
I let out a cold laugh.
“This is my house. Who gave you permission to come in? Showing up uninvited like this is trespassing. I could call the police on you right now.”
Jeremiah was pissed off upon hearing my words.
“Jane, don’t push it! I trusted you, but you’ve completely let me down. Are you still going to tell everyone nothing is going on between you and Eric? Terminating the partnership? That’s just an excuse to go after my family so that I’d feel guilty and take pity on you!”
I had never seen someone so full of themselves. Did Jeremiah think I was still madly in love with him? That everything I did was to get his attention? What a joke.
I couldn’t even be bothered to argue. Just as I pulled out my phone to call the police, Elsa’s delicate voice chimed in again, “Jeremiah, maybe we should leave. If we interrupt whatever Jane and Mr. Flint are up to, who knows what she might do to you in retaliation?”
Oh, for heaven’s sake.
I was standing right here, and she was already starting to play the victim. Her little tricks might work on idiots like Jeremiah and Jack, but not on me. Sure enough, Jeremiah’s expression darkened, and the veins on his temples were visibly pulsing. He stormed toward me, grabbing my wrist with so much force it hurt.
“I used to think I had wronged you all these years, but now I see you’re not even worth my regret! Let me tell you, Jane—whether the Cornell family’s partnership with the Brown family succeeds or not, I’ll never ask you to come back to me again!”
His grip tightened painfully around my wrist. I clenched my teeth as I tried to shake him off, but he only held on tighter.
Just as I was about to yell, Eric stepped in. With one quick motion, he grabbed Jeremiah’s arm and twisted it, forcing him to let go with a cry of pain. Jeremiah stumbled back, clutching his arm in obvious discomfort.
“What right do you have to get involved, Eric?” he spat out the words venomously. “Even if you two are together now, you’re nothing but a sidepiece. What’s there to feel smug about?”
Elsa immediately rushed to support him.
“Jeremiah, stop it! If you keep talking like this, Jane will really get angry with you over Mr. Flint. That won’t help the partnership between our families, and you know what your father said about that.”
Jeremiah let out a cold snort, his eyes filled with contempt as they landed on me. “Hear that, Jane? Elsa is speaking up for you even now! And you? You’ve done nothing but hurt her. You even cheated on me during our marriage! A fickle woman like you doesn’t deserve anyone’s kindness!”
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
“Jeremiah, if you want to be a fool, fine—but don’t drag others down with you. You’ve been played by Elsa so many times, and you’re still defending her? I think your brain must’ve gone rotten. Just throw it out already.”
I truly didn’t understand how Jeremiah’s and Jack’s minds worked. Elsa could confess to her schemes right in front of them, and they’d still refuse to believe it.
If they ever ended up with miserable lives, it wouldn’t just be because they were foolish—it’d be because they were blind to the truth staring them in the face.
