Chapter 69 Like a Guardian Angel
Eric wore a simple, clean white shirt, the cuffs rolled up to reveal his forearms and faint veins. Beneath the slightly open collar, his muscles were subtly outlined; his entire presence exuded a unique, masculine energy.
I instinctively turned my head, feeling my ears burn. “Y–You’re here for business, right?”
He didn’t seem to notice my awkwardness, simply glancing at the private room I was heading to. “I happened to overhear Jeremiah and the others discussing you and got a little worried. So I decided to wait for you here.”
A warm feeling washed over me. It seemed that every time I got into trouble, he was always there. I silently apologized for my previous complaints about him.
From another perspective, he was like my guardian angel. Whenever he was around, I felt much more at ease.
I smiled. “Don’t worry, I’m prepared this time. Since you’re already here, why not join me for a little show?”
He raised an eyebrow but said nothing, simply following me.
When we reached the private room, I could hear voices inside. “Jeremiah, do you think Jane will really come? You two are practically getting a divorce, and she’s with another man now. It’s unlikely she’ll show up.”
Jeremiah snorted. “She’s with that man just to get under my skin. In the end, all she wants is for me to care about her. As long as I text her, she’ll definitely come. Just wait and see.”
Through the crack in the door, I saw his confident expression and couldn’t help but sneer.
Jeremiah, Jeremiah… Things might not go as you planned this time.
I pushed open the door, and the room fell silent. All eyes turned toward me; a few people whispered.
“I didn’t expect Jane to really show up. Looks like Jeremiah was right, she still loves him. How pathetic.”
“I’ve never seen a woman as shameless as Jane. First, she chased after Jeremiah, and now she’s playing both sides to pressure him into taking her back.”
I ignored Jeremiah’s friends’ comments. My gaze was fixed on him and Elsa.
Maintaining her image, Elsa hid her smugness, immediately standing and smiling as she walked toward me. “Jane, you’re finally here. Actually, Jeremiah was just joking about the investors. There’s nothing serious. We just wanted you to come and have a few drinks with us.”
She reached out to link arms, but I pushed her away. I stepped back, distancing myself. “I’m not an escort. Why would I come here to drink with you? Whether you’re joking or not, I came here for the investors. If I don’t meet them, I’ll leave.”
Elsa’s expression darkened as she turned to Jeremiah.
Jeremiah, grim-faced, tilted his head back and drank his champagne in one gulp. His gaze, filled with disdain, was fixed on me.
“Jane, you don’t need to keep pretending. The fact that you’re here shows that you still love me. Since that’s the case, I can reluctantly forgive you for what happened before, but you have to promise me that you’ll never interact with other men again. Otherwise, I’ll have no choice but to divorce you without hesitation!”
