Chapter 78 Turning Things Around

“My issues with Jae have nothing to do with you. As her ex-husband, you should stay buried in your grave. If you keep resurrecting like this, I might just have to bring a priest to exorcise you and send you back where you belong,” Eric said, his words sharp and biting. Jeremiah’s expression darkened further at Eric’s remarks.

Before he could make a move, I interrupted coldly, “Why are you here? If you’re just looking for trouble, I don’t mind calling the police again and having you hauled back to the station! Besides, I think everyone’s eyes are on the Cornell family right now. Are you going to ruin your entire family for your stubbornness?”

My words made Jeremiah hesitate. He glared at Eric before finally turning to look at me. Though his emotions seemed more controlled, his expression still carried resentment.

“I heard from your parents that something happened to you, so I came to check on you. But I didn’t expect you to be so cozy with this pretty boy! Jane, you’ve let me down. I was still worried about you on my way here!”

Worried about me? That was a rare one. He used to wish I’d disappear from his sight, and now he was claiming to be worried about me. If it weren’t for the fact that I was still in control of my senses, I’d almost think I heard him wrong.

I couldn’t help but scoff. “How did you hear about it from my parents? I don’t think they would have contacted you on their own. After all, they had just recently said they were cutting off all ties with the Cornells.”

Jeremiah’s face drained of color. Under the streetlight, there seemed to be a hint of reluctance in his expression.

“I went to talk to Elsa about something and happened to overhear your parents talking about you.”

I couldn’t stop myself from sneering. “In the end, you’re still doing everything for Elsa, right? Your so-called concern for me is just an act to repair the relationship between our families. Jeremiah, after all these years of marriage, I know you well. You’re selfish and arrogant. You value benefits above all else. The only reason you’re still clinging to me now is because I still have value to you! Once I’m no longer useful, you’ll throw me away without hesitation!”

It seemed I had hit a nerve, as his eyes flashed with guilt. But when he glanced at Eric, his anger flared up again.

“Jane, you have no right to say that about me. I came here because I genuinely cared about you. But instead of appreciating my concern, you’re criticizing me in front of others! If it weren’t for you falling for another man, we would never have ended up divorced, and the relationship between our two families wouldn’t have become this tense!”

His ability to turn things around was really something.

I narrowed my eyes, no longer wanting to argue with him. I turned to look at Eric instead. “I’m a bit tired, so I’m going to go rest. You should head home too.”

I then turned to go inside. Jeremiah panicked and reached out to stop me, but before his hand could touch my shoulder, Eric stopped him.

“Did you not hear Jae? She’s tired. If you’re truly concerned, you should let her rest now, not keep pestering her. Or is it that Jae’s right about all your actions being just empty gestures?” Eric’s sharp gaze swept over Jeremiah.
