Listen to this chapter:

Public opinion on the Internet began to shift dramatically. The voices praising Evangeline vanished, and those who believed in her or remained neutral were afraid to speak up, waiting instead for an official announcement from the police.

Many of Evangeline's fans maintained her innocence, recalling how she had been slandered before, only to be proven right in the end. They held their tongues, closely monitoring the official account of the Lyrendia police, anticipating an official statement.

The incident had sparked so much public debate that the police would inevitably issue an announcement, regardless of the outcome, to quell the unrest and prevent further questioning of their authority.

At the police station, Evangeline and the others were separated and questioned. Evangeline's statement remained consistent: she saw Jackson taking upskirt photos of other girls, prompting her to pull down his pants and expose him.

Jackson, however, adamantly denied taking any such photos. When the police requested access to his phone's album, he refused, citing his right to privacy before conviction and promptly calling his lawyer.

His refusal immediately aroused suspicion, but without concrete evidence, the police couldn't search his phone.

An impasse ensued. The police took turns interrogating him, but Jackson remained uncooperative.

The next day at noon, just as the police were considering releasing Jackson, Dexter suddenly submitted evidence.

The officers were shocked and immediately reported to their superiors, leading to the formation of an investigation team. They launched an in-depth investigation, summoning Jackson's girlfriend, a dozen Lyrendia University students, and school leaders for questioning.

Dexter requested permission to take Evangeline out for dinner, which the police granted, as she hadn't committed a serious crime and had provided her address, making her easy to locate.

Seeing Evangeline leave, Jackson demanded to be released as well, but the police refused and assigned officers to monitor him.

Furious, Jackson exclaimed, "I'm the victim! Why can Evangeline leave, but I can't? Did you take a bribe from her?"

A policeman retorted sharply, "Mind your words! Slandering the police is a punishable offense! Someone has submitted evidence of your crime, and we are investigating. If it's verified, we will formally arrest you and file a lawsuit! If you have committed any crime, you'd better turn yourself in now, and you might receive a lighter sentence!"

Jackson's expression changed, panic setting in.

But he quickly regained his composure and said loudly, "Don't intimidate me! I won't be fooled. I've never done anything illegal. I'm the victim, yet you've kept me here for so long and let the person who hurt me go free. You must have taken bribes from Evangeline. When I get out, I will expose you and sue you!"

The policeman shook his head. "You have the right to sue us, but if you don't turn yourself in and continue to quibble and slander us, you will be severely punished after our investigation is complete!" With that, the officer left the interrogation room, instructing others to keep a close watch on Jackson.

Meanwhile, Evangeline, Dexter, and Arthur drove to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Before their food arrived, Evangeline turned to Dexter and asked, "What evidence did you give the police?"

Dexter smiled. "Last night, after you told me he was taking upskirt photos, I asked Wesley to look into him. People who take risks to take upskirt photos usually do it for profit. They post their videos or photos on websites for others to pay to watch. Or they take orders, fulfilling specific requests.

Wesley and the others searched all night and found something useful. Jackson has been making money by taking upskirt photos for three years. He has earned millions of dollars and has caused a large number of victims. He has also committed other crimes that are truly awful. If nothing goes wrong, he will spend the rest of his life in prison."

Evangeline was surprised. "Wow. He's really a serious criminal."

Dexter smiled. "You're amazing, Evangeline. You caught a criminal by chance. This steak is your reward." He handed her a steak.

Evangeline tapped him on the head. "Kid, don't talk to me like you're coaxing a child."

Dexter retorted, "Don't you always talk to me like that?"

Evangeline replied, "I'm older than you. Of course I can."

Dexter said, "You are only two months older than me."

Evangeline said, "So what? You'll always be my younger brother."

Dexter snorted and stopped arguing with her.

Soon, photos of Evangeline having dinner in the restaurant were posted online.

Since the previous night, the internet had been flooded with discussions about Evangeline taking off a talented student's pants and falsely accusing him of taking upskirt photos. Everyone was condemning her. After the video surfaced, the abuse online intensified.

[What are the police doing? Evangeline took off Jackson's pants and spread rumors to ruin his reputation. Shouldn't she be punished? How could she be released so soon?]

[There must be something shady going on! They should investigate the police station in Lyrendia!]

[She has already been released? I thought she would be detained for at least a few days. I underestimated Evangeline's connections. I've lost confidence in our law.]

[I'm so disappointed. The victim hasn't been released yet, but the perpetrator is already free.]

[How can we believe in the country and the law?!]

[Go to hell, Evangeline! If I were in that neighborhood, I would do something to her to uphold justice!]
