Before he could react, Evangeline swiftly kicked Jasper hard.
"Bang!" Jasper was sent flying dozens of feet. He fell to the ground, vomiting blood.
"Evangeline, are you okay?" A hurried voice came from behind. It was Arthur. Evangeline turned to see Arthur walking in with Dexter.
Arthur looked worried and anxious, while Dexter's face was gloomy, radiating a murderous aura.
Dexter stared at Jasper, his eyes conveying that the man was already dead. Dexter strode towards Jasper.
Before Jasper could recover from the dizziness and pain, he felt another wave of indescribable agony. "Ah..." Jasper cried out. As he opened his mouth, Dexter grabbed his tongue and yanked it out. Jasper's face twisted in pain; he trembled, struggling weakly. But his body was seriously injured, rendering him almost immobile. He could only feebly raise a hand, but it was useless.
"Dexter, don't mess around! Just hand him over to the police," Evangeline roared. She rushed towards Dexter, disregarding Arthur. But she was a step too late. By the time she reached him, Jasper's mouth was already overflowing with blood.
Dexter held a bloody tongue in his hand, splattering blood onto himself. He dropped the tongue, took a dagger from his pocket, and raised it to stab Jasper. Evangeline quickly grabbed his wrist.
"Dexter, that's enough," she said. "He hasn't attacked us. You can't kill him."
Dexter showed no intention of stopping. His gloomy eyes, now bloodshot, stared at Jasper. He tried to break free of Evangeline's grip to finish Jasper off.
"Are you not listening to me?" Evangeline said angrily. "If you don't listen this time, I won't care about you anymore."
Dexter's hand instantly lost its strength. He slowly lowered his arm, and the dagger fell to the ground.
He lowered his eyes, looking aggrieved and pitiful. "He hurt you. I'm angry. I want to chop him into meat paste."
Evangeline rubbed his head and said softly, "He didn't lick me. I kicked him away before he touched me."
Dexter remained angry. "He scratched your foot."
Evangeline laughed. "It's just a scratch. When I fight, I always get touched."
Dexter snorted angrily.
Evangeline took his hand and forcibly dragged him away. She feared that if they stayed, Dexter would kill Jasper.
She dragged Dexter out of the warehouse, and Arthur followed. At the door, Evangeline took out her phone and called the police.
Inside the warehouse, Jasper lay on the ground, watching Evangeline leave in agony. As she walked away, he trembled and raised his hand, reaching for her. But all he grasped was air.
A dry howl escaped his mouth, blood gurgled out, and tears streamed down his face. Queen Jade, why didn't she, who had saved him once, save him again? He could lose loved ones, but he couldn't lose his faith. "Ahhh..." He howled and crawled forward with difficulty. He didn't want her to leave. He was so badly injured that his mouth kept bleeding profusely, rapidly draining his strength and consciousness. After a couple of steps, he could move no further. He could only look at Evangeline's back in pain and wail. As Evangeline disappeared completely, the light in his eyes faded and turned dark.
He was forsaken by Queen Jade. The only light in his life had gone out. Crying and laughing, he trembled, picking up the dagger from the ground and cutting the main artery in his neck. The blood spread quickly across the ground.
Stubbornly, he kept his eyes open, looking towards the warehouse gate, hoping to see Evangeline turn around and hear her say she would forgive him before he died.
But until his last moment, he never saw Evangeline turn back. She was resolute, unyielding in her decision not to forgive him, even in death.
By the time the police arrived, Jasper was dead. His eyes remained open, staring towards the warehouse door.
The police contacted the forensic doctor and took photos of Jasper's body before a hearse removed it.
Evangeline and the others were taken to the police station. Evangeline's kidnapping was easily verified. She gave her statement and was released. But Dexter was held in custody. Although Jasper's fatal wound was clearly a cut to the aorta, his tongue had been torn out while he was still alive, an act that Jasper couldn't have inflicted upon himself.
Dexter didn't deny it, admitting that he was responsible.
No matter the explanation, it couldn't be considered self-defense, so they had to detain him.
Evangeline explained to the police that Jasper had tried to stick his tongue out to molest her, and Dexter had pulled Jasper's tongue off impulsively to protect her.
But the police apparently couldn't accept her explanation. Even if her reason was true, it didn't justify tearing out someone's tongue.
As Evangeline became increasingly anxious, Dexter's parents arrived at the police station.
They presented Dexter and Evangeline's mental disorder diagnoses and bailed him out.
When Naomi experienced mental health issues, Evangeline and Dexter felt awful. They went to the psychiatric hospital to accompany Naomi through the procedures.
Evangeline felt perfectly sane and didn't believe there was anything wrong with her. When she passed the examination and was admitted to a mental hospital, she thought it was because Dexter's parents intervened.
But she knew that Dexter had displayed abnormal tendencies since childhood. Ever since she had taken Dexter in, she had noticed it. At the age of three, he would stuff live frogs, mice, snakes, and other things into his mouth. He would eat whatever he caught.
She could understand that he was a wanderer with nothing to eat, so he would eat whatever he caught. But when he ate, there was no expression of fear on his face, which shocked her greatly at the time.
Back then, she could only eat grass and the worms on vegetable leaves when she was extremely hungry. She wasn't as ferocious as him.
Dexter, who was so tough at the age of three, seemed to grow weaker as he aged.
Evangeline calmed down and examined the two psychiatric papers brought by Bradley and Laura. She was confused. If only Dexter was being detained, why had they brought hers as well?
