Evangeline's murderous glare was contained, but her eyes remained cold. "A gift for me?" she asked.

The monkey king scratched its head, then shoved the wild hare closer to Evangeline. It was clearly a gift.

Evangeline looked at the monkey king with mixed feelings. It seemed to have submitted after its beating. She smiled, bent down, picked up the hare, and whistled cheerfully. "I'll take the hare. You're forgiven. Don't attack me again; I won't show mercy next time." With that warning, she walked back, the hare in hand.

After a quick glance, Evangeline turned away, took her hare to the river, and pulled out her folding knife. Swiftly, she gutted and skinned it. The bloody scene made the others frown.

Meghan muttered, "Evangeline is so cruel. She didn't even flinch. She's unkind and must have done many mean things!"

Travis, also frightened, said, "I'm not going either. She was lenient to Jolene but ruthless to us men. I can barely walk today. If she beats me again, I won't be able to find food tomorrow." They hadn't hunted the two hares; they'd found them wounded, with grass tangled in their feet. They lacked knives, however, and waited for Evangeline to return, hoping to borrow hers. Kendrick suggested to Samson and Meghan, "How about you two go? You're family, after all. She should be more patient with you."

Meghan retorted, "Where did you get that idea? She beat Sam and me more severely than you!" She was right; their injuries were the worst.

Travis suggested rock-paper-scissors to decide who would approach Evangeline. Kendrick and Travis paired up, as did Samson and Meghan. The losers of each pair would play against Jolene. Samson lost.

Reluctantly, Samson approached Evangeline and said indifferently, "Evangeline, lend us your knife." His tone was less a request than a challenge.

Evangeline didn't look back. "No," she said coldly.

Samson exploded. "Evangeline, why are you so selfish? You don't share food, and now you won't lend your knife! You're selfish and mean! You don't care about your companions! People like you should be treated like traitors in wartime!"

Evangeline rolled her eyes, regretting saving him the previous night. He'd shown no appreciation and treated her worse. I really saved an ungrateful man, she thought.

Samson's anger flared. Ignored by Evangeline, he glared at her back and kicked her. Evangeline dodged, but Samson pushed again. Before he could touch her, she grabbed his wrist and threw him into the river. He grabbed her shirt as he fell. Splash! Evangeline was pulled in. Her dagger and hare meat fell into the river.

Samson held onto Evangeline tightly. "Everyone in the Gallagher family is honest and kind. Even Meghan, who isn't related by blood, is kind-hearted. How can there be such a cold-blooded and vicious person like you? You're a stain on the Gallagher family!" He raised his hand to strike her.

Evangeline's face was grim. Slap! Before Samson could hit her, she slapped him, gripping his wrist so hard it nearly broke. "Ahh!" he screamed, forced to let go. Evangeline kicked him away.

"Who are you to lecture me? I've cut ties with the Gallaghers, so don't associate me with them! Do you think I'm a disgrace? Humph! I don't want to be linked with fools like you! Get lost!" Evangeline swam to shore.

Samson struggled, but his strength failed him. He was carried away by the current. "Help!" he cried.
