The Cooper residence wasn't in Kensbury City, but in a small town outside the suburbs. The old mansion occupied nearly half the town, a charming place that retained its quaint character, unlike many others exploited by developers. Numerous developers had attempted to purchase the mansion, but couldn't agree on a price. The urban planning bureau, finding development impractical, cleverly designated it a tourist attraction, successfully drawing many visitors. The mansion's main gate frequently appeared on social media, boosting its popularity among internet celebrities.
Hannah and Michelle entered the Cooper mansion. Inside, Lorie Cox, the elderly matriarch, sat in the main hall, looking unwell. Roger and his family were seated on either side. Though Roger owned a city villa, he'd recently moved his family back to the old mansion, ostensibly to be a dutiful son.
Hannah greeted Lorie, "Good afternoon, Granny."
Lorie responded sharply, "I only asked you to come. Why did you bring her? Are you afraid I'll bully you?"
Michelle quickly explained, "Of course not, Mother. Knowing you'd asked Hannah, and having not seen you in so long, I wanted to visit."
Esther, with contempt, retorted, "Why, Michelle, you didn't bring a gift? How sincere!"
Hannah glanced at her. Esther had previously cooperated with Hannah, only to shift her allegiance when seeking the old lady's favor.
"Who says we didn't bring a gift?" Hannah countered.
"Then where is it? Show me!" Esther demanded aggressively.
Michelle felt awkward. Their hasty visit hadn't allowed for gift preparation, and the pointed question embarrassed her. She subtly urged Hannah to endure the situation. Michelle had always endured Lorie and the family's rudeness.
Before Hannah could speak, Lorie interjected, "Who would want her gifts!"
Hannah, lips pursed, said bluntly, "Is there anything, Granny, you need me for? If not, we'll leave." She took her mother's arm, ready to depart.
"Stop!" Lorie bellowed. "Did I say you could leave? You rude brat! You're clearly raised by an uneducated woman! You don't even know basic etiquette!" The comment was a clear jab at Michelle's background.
Michelle felt a familiar pang of sadness. Hannah had often seen her mother's red-rimmed eyes after visits to the Cooper mansion. To avoid upsetting her father and maintain family peace, Michelle endured everything. But her patience hadn't brought benefits; it only emboldened Lorie's cruel behavior.
Hannah's expression hardened.
Lorie continued her taunts, "So, you've become disrespectful now that you've inherited my Cooper property?"
Hannah retorted, "Granny, don't forget your surname is Cox, and the Cooper property doesn't belong to you."
Lorie's eyes widened in disbelief, her face flushing. She was stunned by the formerly meek granddaughter's defiance.
"Grandpa stipulated the property distribution in his will," Hannah stated grimly. "If you're unhappy, ask him yourself."
Roger exploded, "How dare you curse your grandmother?"
Hannah replied innocently, "Uncle Roger, I said nothing disrespectful. Are you bothered by this? Perhaps you've considered it yourself?"
Roger's face turned crimson.
Hannah sneered, "I'm not here to fight or be bullied. Granny said she needed me; if she only wants to scold me, I haven't the time."
Everyone was shocked by Hannah's transformation. She was articulate and powerful, facing Lorie without fear. Michelle, speechless with surprise, was impressed. Hannah's assertive behavior, following her recent confrontation with Mary, was almost unrecognizable. Yet, Michelle felt a satisfaction she hadn't experienced in years. She decided to let Hannah handle the situation, unconcerned about severing ties with the family. Her kind actions had been consistently rebuffed.
Lorie, furious, sputtered, "Get out!"
Hannah's eyes darkened. "Granny, legally, this mansion belongs to my father, and thus to us. Is it appropriate to order us to leave?"
"Hannah Cooper!"
Hannah continued, dismissively, "I didn't mean to ask you to leave. I just advise you not to be so arrogant on someone else's propertyโit only breeds resentment." She aimed a cutting blow at Lorie's pride.
Lorie screamed, pointing at Hannah. She'd never been treated this way.
Hannah responded calmly, "I was stating facts. If I offended you, please forgive a child's bluntness. However, with your age and experience, I hope you can be respectful. No one appreciates being insulted."
Lorie was rendered speechless by Hannah's logic.
