Chapter 1042: Oscar Had Missed Her
"No, no, no," the nurse exclaimed, startled by Besse's words. "The Commander is heavily guarded; we can't determine his condition. All information about him is sealed. Even the floor where he's being treated is locked down."
Besse listened intently, sensing the nurse's honesty. It was only logical for the Commander to receive such stringent protection, and news of his injury couldn't be released without causing international turmoil.
"Miss Besse, please eat something when you wake," the nurse said gently. "The doctor says you're weak and need nourishment."
Besse nodded. Doyle was past the critical stage, and Oscar didn't need her worrying about him. She needed to focus on herself.
With the nurses' help, Besse ate dinner but remained awake, having slept too long earlier. Just as she considered checking on Doyle, her ward door burst open.
Susan, eyes swollen with tears, stood at her bedside. "Besse!" she choked out, followed by Manuel.
"Are you okay?!" Susan asked anxiously.
"I'm fine," Besse replied calmly. "Fractures from the accident, but after surgery and rest, I'll be alright."
"Thank goodness! When you called, I nearly died of fright," Susan said, her voice still trembling. "I wanted to come, but Manuel wouldn't let me!"
Fortunately, Manuel had prevented Susan from rushing to the scene. She was pregnant, and might have acted recklessly.
"You saved me. You informed Oscar, didn't you?" Besse smiled reassuringly. "Thanks to the timely rescue, we were saved. Doyle's injuries are more severe, but he'll recover with rest."
"Is Doyle alright now?" Susan asked.
"He should be," Besse replied.
"But what about Oscar...?" Susan trailed off.
After the accident, Manuel kept Susan at home, awaiting updates. She longed to go to the scene, but after weighing the pros and cons with Manuel, she waited until news arrived that the kidnappers were dead, and the others hospitalized. Then, she insisted on going to the hospital immediately; Manuel, equally anxious, drove her there.
They went straight to Oscar, who was in surgery for hours. They waited outside, receiving intermittent updates: Besse had finished surgery and been moved to a ward; Doyle's surgery was also complete. Their focus, however, remained entirely on Oscar.
Susan sensed the tension and remained quiet. She knew Oscar had been moved to intensive care. Once everything was settled, she asked Manuel to accompany her to see Besse.
Besse understood from Susan's hesitation that they knew about Oscar's condition. However, she didn't want to delve into it abruptly.
Seeing Besse's seeming indifference, Susan decided to wait. Although Oscar was out of surgery, he remained unconscious. If he didn't wake tonight, no one knew what would happen.
"I heard it was Doyle's enemies seeking revenge," Susan said, changing the subject.
Besse hummed in agreement. It was Doyle's past grievances that had caused this.
"I want to see Doyle," Besse said, breaking the silence.
Susan had things she wanted to say but remained silent. Perhaps a visit to Oscar might help him wake up, she mused. Yet, she felt Besse still resented Oscar; if she cared, she would have asked about him.
"Lyla, can you get me a wheelchair?" Besse asked her orderly.
Walking was impossible, but a wheelchair was her best option. Lyla readily agreed.
With the orderly's help, Besse sat in the wheelchair. "Susan, I'm going to see Doyle. It's late, and you're pregnant. You and Manuel should go home."
"We'll go with you," Susan refused. "You don't know anyone in Northfield."
Besse, realizing her dependence, nodded silently.
The orderly wheeled Besse out; Manuel and Susan followed. They had discussed letting Besse see Oscar, but Susan couldn't bring herself to suggest it. It felt too difficult.
With a heavy heart, Susan followed Besse to Doyle's ICU. Doyle, despite the tubes, smiled faintly when he saw Besse through the window.
Besse's heart ached. Susan, witnessing Doyle's smile, felt even more apprehensive about suggesting a visit to Oscar. It felt like it could destroy their relationship.
Besse donned an antibacterial suit and entered Doyle's room. Susan watched the love between them, realizing this wasn't the time for Besse to suppress her feelings.
"Manuel, forget it," she said. "Besse can't fall for Oscar again. What's the point of seeing him now?"
Manuel watched silently. He'd believed amnesia was the barrier, but now he thought it was simply that Oscar had missed her.
