Listen to this chapter:

No matter what happened after she was revived, she never cried. She always forced herself to endure. She didn't understand why she felt so upset now.

โ€œIf you keep crying, I will kiss you again,โ€ Oscar said, seeming at a loss. He glared at her, a fierce look intended as a threat.

Hannah cried even louder. Oscar panicked. He took her hand. โ€œOr you can hit me.โ€

Hannah snatched her hand away.

โ€œPlease stop crying,โ€ Oscar pleaded, reaching out to wipe her tears. โ€œItโ€™s just a kiss. Iโ€™m not irresponsible. Why are you crying?โ€ He felt overwhelmed, a little annoyed by his inability to comfort her. He was angry with himself for his ineptitude.

โ€œI didnโ€™t ask you to take responsibility,โ€ Hannah sobbed, her tears finally subsiding.

Oscar was relieved.

โ€œHave you never said anything sweet to women?โ€ Hannah asked. He hadnโ€™t.

โ€œNever, so what?โ€ Oscar retorted angrily.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t need to say sweet things to them before?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

Hannah doubted him, but Oscar wanted to change the subject. โ€œAre you calm now?โ€

Hannah was embarrassed by her outburst. She felt she had vented the grievances of both her past and present lives; she was exhausted.

โ€œThen letโ€™s talk about you and Charles,โ€ Oscar said, his expression serious.

Hannah pursed her lips. She knew sheโ€™d been foolish to go see Charles, to test his loyalty, but she had. Now she knew he was easily manipulated, readily dropping his pretense.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to talk about,โ€ Hannah said lightly. She had been hurt and would retaliate.

โ€œNow you know what kind of person Charles is?โ€ Oscar asked.

โ€œYes, indeed,โ€ Hannah gritted her teeth.

โ€œSo, in the future, will you stay away from Charles?โ€

Hannah looked at Oscar. โ€œThereโ€™s no chance of him getting close to me again.โ€

โ€œWhat if there is?โ€ Oscar said aggressively.

โ€œWhat do you want to say?โ€ Hannahโ€™s face darkened.

โ€œJimmy,โ€ Oscar said casually, โ€œHeโ€™s a Taekwondo black belt, holds the Golden Dragon Badge in martial arts, and was the last national boxing champion.โ€

Hannah was puzzled.

โ€œHeโ€™ll be your bodyguard from now on,โ€ Oscar explained.

Hannah was surprised. She was touched by his concern for her safety.

โ€œCharles failed this time, and this could happen again. I might not be able to get there in time,โ€ Oscar said seriously. โ€œI donโ€™t want to ruin our relationshipโ€ฆ our partnership.โ€

Hannah finally understood. A relationship with Charles would mean his wife had cheated on him, a betrayal of his dignity. More importantly, it would jeopardize their mutually beneficial business arrangement. The cost of their recent wedding, and the potential for a quick dissolution, weighed heavily on him. His anger had stemmed from this.

Understanding this, Hannah no longer resisted. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll pay you. How much per month?โ€

The tender moment vanished. Their relationship was transactional, devoid of emotion.

โ€œI donโ€™t need your money. Just stay faithful to me,โ€ Oscar said earnestly.

Hannah was speechless. Despite the purely business nature of their arrangement, she felt a flicker of something akin to flirtation.

She nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œAs an exchange condition,โ€ Oscar added.

Hannah looked at him.

โ€œI will stay faithful to you as well.โ€

โ€œCan you?โ€ Hannah asked.

โ€œFor you, of course.โ€

Hannah didnโ€™t pressure him. For their cooperation, however, his fidelity would be beneficial. She didnโ€™t object.

โ€œItโ€™s getting late. Iโ€™m going to rest,โ€ she said.

โ€œDonโ€™t you even ask why I came back suddenly?โ€ Oscar seemed dissatisfied. Hannah found him childish sometimes. He clearly had something he needed to do, but she wasn't interested.

โ€œBecause I thought you needed me,โ€ Oscar said.

Hannah was confused.

โ€œIsnโ€™t Jane dead?โ€ Oscar asked.

โ€œWe had no sisterly bond,โ€ Hannah said bluntly. โ€œShe deserved it, and Iโ€™m not sorry.โ€

Oscar looked at her questioningly.

Hannah didnโ€™t try to hide her ruthlessness. โ€œOscar, Iโ€™m not a kind person. I have no mercy on those who hurt me.โ€

โ€œAre you reminding me of something?โ€ Oscar said, scrutinizing her. She had changed significantly. He remembered her crying over a dead puppy; now, she was calm about the death of a relative.

โ€œIโ€™m reminding myself,โ€ Hannah said slowly. โ€œI have to get my revenge.โ€

โ€œYou hated Charles so much just because he cheated on you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Hannahโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œHe is my absolutely irreconcilable enemy!โ€

Was this the woman he knew?

โ€œDo you regret cooperating with me?โ€ Hannah asked, sensing he might be questioning their partnership due to her lack of emotion. She had no intention of hiding anything from him; if he couldnโ€™t handle it, she wouldnโ€™t force him.

โ€œNo,โ€ Oscar shook his head, speaking softly. โ€œHannah, one day you will know how much I love you.โ€
