Chapter 128: Maxwell Admits His Guilt
Hannah extracted the papers from the file, one by one. Everyone watched intently, a palpable expectation hanging in the air.
โThis document,โ Hannah announced, โis a record of your hotel stays with Masonโs daughter, Ernie. It shows your first encounter was March 18th, two years ago, at a Kensbury hotel. Over the past two years, youโve been there with her at least twice a week, the last time being yesterday.โ
โYouโre throwing mud!โ Maxwell retorted. โYou have a random hotel record and claim itโs mine? Are you mocking me?โ
It was his last desperate attempt at denial. Hannah remained impassive, observing his unraveling.
โThis,โ she continued, โis a record of your spending on Ernie. It shows significant expenditures over these years. Designer handbags, jewelry, a sports carโฆ over two million dollars total. Thatโs more than a million a year.โ
โDo you think money grows on trees?โ Maxwell scoffed. โI earn three million a year at Cooper Group! I wouldnโt spend almost half my salary on a mistress. Itโs ridiculous! I give my entire salary to my wife; you can call her and ask!โ
โYour salary might not cover a mistress,โ Hannah countered, โbut the Cooper Groupโs yearly dividends are substantial. You consistently overdraw your dividends each month, and I suspect those funds went to Ernie.โ
โBullshit!โ Maxwell exploded, his indignation palpable. โYouโre trying to sabotage me! Iโve championed employee rights, and this is your payback? Hannah, youโre not here to work; youโre here to destroy this company!โ
โMr. Watson,โ Hannah replied calmly, โthe more you lie, the worse the consequences will be.โ
โStop threatening me and shut your fucking mouth!โ Maxwell roared, his face contorted with fury and a hint of panic. He knew Hannah possessed the truth, but admitting it would be devastating. His recent public pronouncements of love for his wife and family would be utterly shattered.
โI donโt have time for this,โ he spat, turning to leave.
โThis is a photograph of you and Ernie,โ Hannah stated, each word deliberate, sharp.
Maxwell spun around. He saw Hannah holding a large color print, visible to everyone. The explicit image left no room for doubt.
His composure shattered. Panic replaced his anger. He lunged toward Hannah, attempting to snatch the picture, but Jimmy intervened.
โSon of a bitch, get away!โ Jimmy commanded, holding firm.
โWhoโs the real bitch?โ Hannah countered, her voice hardening. โMr. Watson, donโt you know?โ
โYou!โ Maxwell yelled, stung by her retort. โTear it up! Tear it up now!โ
โOnly if you admit it,โ Hannah replied.
โItโs a fake!โ he insisted, his face crimson with rage. His uncontrolled outburst only amplified his guilt.
โShall I release the video then?โ Hannah asked, her brow furrowing momentarily.
Maxwell was stunned. He suppressed a murderous rage.
โDo you want me to?โ Hannah repeated, her calm a stark contrast to Maxwellโs escalating fury.
His facade crumbled. The room's collective suspicion transformed into unwavering belief in Hannahโs accusations. Disgust etched itself onto the faces of those present.
Whispers filled the room: โI canโt believe Mr. Watsonโฆ his mistress is almost his daughterโs age.โ โI saw him on a financial show with his wifeโฆ he seemed so nice.โ โMason sent his daughter to his bossโs bed? My faith in humanity is shattered.โ
The comments fueled Maxwellโs escalating rage.
โShut up! Shut the fuck up!โ he bellowed, a wild man. Jimmy held him fast, preventing any further action.
โShut up! Let me go!โ Maxwell screamed, his tirade unrelenting.
Once a respected business elite, he was now a wretched, frustrated middle-aged man. His furious shouts echoed on the rooftop. Mason remained unusually silent, his earlier humiliation compounded by the revelations about his daughter.
Finally, after a protracted outburst, Maxwell surrendered.
โYes, Ernie is my mistress,โ he admitted. โSo what? Did I break any law? Thereโs no law against that in Northfield! What can you do? You canโt get your father to fire me, can you?โ
Hannah smiled faintly. โYour actions are morally reprehensible, and my father can't fire you for your personal life. However, the damage to the companyโs reputation justifies his dismissal. But,โ she added, โI believe my father won't. Youโve worked here for years, contributed significantly. At the very least, Iโll protect your familyโs legacy. Their contributions to Cooper Group are undeniable.โ
โGood to know,โ Maxwell sneered, his defiance momentarily resurfacing.
