Chapter 143: So Thrilling

It was late. Their car accelerated down the wide avenue, where traffic was sparse. She remained nervous, but fought to stay calm.

"Can you lose them?" she asked Jimmy.

"Hard to say," Jimmy replied. "I think we have more than one car on our tail."

Hannah's expression changed.

"Madam, hold tight," Jimmy said, pressing hard on the accelerator.

Hannah felt her seatbelt tighten. She gritted her teeth, striving to remain composed. Their car careened wildly down the street, pursued relentlessly by the car behind. It gained speed.

Jimmy swerved suddenly. Had she not been belted in, she would have been thrown from the car. She stifled a scream. Then, she heard Jimmy's anxious voice: "Madam, please call Master Oscar."

Hannah knew they couldn't escape without help. She quickly found her phone and called Oscar. The connection took a while. Finally, after a burst of loud music, Oscar's voice drawled, "Ms. Cooper, what can I do for you?"

Too nervous to address his teasing tone, she replied immediately, "Oscar, we're being followedโ€ฆ Ah!"

Jimmy's sudden braking startled her; she cried out, dropping her phone.

"Madam, hold on tight," Jimmy said, noticing her near-loss of balance.

"Okay," Hannah said, bending to retrieve her phone. At that moment, Oscar's anxious voice filled the receiver, "Hannah, Hannah!"

"I'm okay," she replied quickly. "They're chasing us. Jimmy says it's hard to lose them. I think it's Charlesโ€ฆ"

"Put Jimmy on the phone," Oscar said, his panic apparently subsiding.

Hannah quickly pressed speakerphone and placed it near Jimmy. "You can talk now; Jimmy can hear you," she said loudly.

"Where exactly are you?" Oscar asked.

"Just past the Nan Avenue intersection. Three modified cars are chasing us. They're trying to ram us. I'm barely avoiding them, and if they send more men, it won't be easy to escape unscathed."

Another sharp turn. Hannah gripped Jimmy's seat, preventing her phone from flying away.

"Hannah," Oscar called again.

"I'm here," she answered quickly, despite her fear.

"Share your real-time location with me. And stay on the line; I need to know your situation at all times."

"Okay," Hannah said, complying.

Silence fell on Oscar's end, though the call remained connected. Hannah didn't know what he was doing, how he would save them, or even if he would. She had no time to dwell on it. The pursuers were relentless, pushing Jimmy and Hannah to the brink.

Jimmy drove with a combination of caution and speed. It was far more thrilling than any movie, Hannah thought. Several times, she felt the car behind would hit them, yet Jimmy avoided collision at the last moment each time. She knew she would be dead without him. She focused, daring not to be distracted.

Suddenly, Oscar's voice cut through the tension, "Jimmy."

"Yes, sir," Jimmy replied respectfully.

Hannah marveled at Jimmy's focus. In the midst of such danger, he could drive and talk to Oscar simultaneously.

"Turn right at the next junction, go straight down Hanlin Road, and keep going. I'll have someone intercept them at the intersection!"

"Okay," Jimmy said, obeying without hesitation.

Again, silence on the phone. Though Oscar was helping, his detached manner left Hannah uneasy. She pursed her lips. She should be grateful; after all, their marriage was a sham. She shouldn't expect more. Yet, his lack of concern bothered her. Shouldn't he show some concern for my life being in danger, even as business partners? she wondered.

"Ah!" The car lurched violently, interrupting her thoughts.

"Another car," Jimmy stated grimly.

Hannah saw it on their right. Jimmy made a sharp turn to avoid it, veering from Oscar's instructed route.

"Mr. Wells," Jimmy said into the phone.

No answer.

"Mr. Wells," he repeated.

Hannah felt a fresh wave of anxiety. He didn't hang up, did he? How could he be so careless now?

"Mr. Wellsโ€ฆ"

"Jimmy," Oscar's cold voice responded, devoid of emotion, concern, or strain.

"There are now four cars. The new one forced me off course. I'm doing my best, but if they attack again, I might not be able to avoid them," Jimmy reported calmly.

"Okay. Forget the route. Just ensure your safety. Five minutes, and I'll be there," Oscar said.

"Yes," Jimmy replied. Silence again.

Hannah watched Jimmy accelerate wildly to try to shake off the pursuing cars. The thrilling chase continued.

"Careful!" Jimmy yelled.

Hannah saw a black modified car approaching from another direction. With three cars behind them, escape seemed impossible. The car bore down on themโ€ฆ
