Chapter 146: How Much She Weighs in His Heart?
Hearing the doctor's words, everyone sighed in relief. The medical staff wheeled Oscar from the operating room.
"Oscar!" Theodore rushed to his side, followed by the others. "How are you doing? Do you recognize me?" he asked anxiously.
Oscar's face and body were swathed in bandages, giving him a slightly comical appearance. He stared at Theodore silently.
"Are you okay?" Theodore's heart pounded as he received no response. Oscar simply closed his eyes.
"Doctor! Doctor! Is heโฆ is he a vegetable?" Theodore's panicked question made the doctor question his own diagnosis. He examined Oscar.
"I'm good. Thanks," Oscar said clearly.
"Oh my god, Oscar! You're okay! But why didn't you say anything?" Theodore exclaimed.
"Just didn't feel like talking," Oscar mumbled.
"Why not? Aren't you feeling well? Tell us if something's wrong! Don't keep it to yourself. Don't be afraid toโฆ"
"Enough," Manuel interrupted. "People who don't know the situation will think you're Oscar's wife. Just be quiet."
"Fuck you. I'm straight," Theodore retorted, speechless.
Everyone glanced at Hannah, who remained far calmer than Theodore. In their eyes, she was Oscar's "wife," and given her involvement in the accident, they expected greater distress.
"Let's move the patient to the ward," the medical staff suggested, clearly also relieved. This also spared Hannah further embarrassment. She found it difficult to face Oscar's friends.
They followed the staff to the VIP room. The staff remained until Oscar was settled, providing necessary instructions.
Even after they left, Theodore remained beside Oscar, his concern bordering on obsession, fearing his sudden death. Had Hannah not known Oscar wasn't gay, she would have doubted their relationship. She had considered them mere drinking buddies, but their closeness surprised her.
"Hannah," Manuel called. Theodore remained at Oscar's side; the others, including Hannah, kept their distance. She wanted to show her concern but didn't know how, especially after their recent argument.
"Come outside with me," Manuel said softly.
Hannah glanced at Oscar before leaving with Manuel. Oscar watched her go.
Outside, the corridor was quiet.
"Let me explain," Manuel said directly.
"Okay," Hannah nodded.
"You know Theodore. Don't take it to heart. He's blunt, but not a bad person."
"I know," Hannah smiled, showing she wasn't bothered by Theodore's outburst.
"But Theodore was right. Oscar would die for you!" Manuel stated emphatically.
Hannah looked up, stunned. "I bet you know I've been heartbroken tonight," Manuel added.
Hannah nodded; she knew of his unrequited love for Susan.
"Well, I overestimated myself. I'm not as strong as I thought. I couldn't calmly accept their relationship and left. Oscar and Theodore followed, we went to the Emperor Club, and received your call there," Manuel explained.
"You don't know how terrible Oscar looked when he heard you were in danger. He's rarely affected by others; he doesn'tโฆ he doesn't get emotional, even when angry. But what happened to you freaked him out," Manuel continued. "But the emotion vanished instantly. Then he calmly planned your rescue. You think he's cold and unapproachable? Couldn't you feel his care and love?"
"Mm," Hannah murmured.
"His hands were shaking when he spoke to you on the phone. I swear, it's been ten years since he was that nervous."
"Ten years ago?" Hannah was surprised.
"That's beside the point," Manuel said. "The point is, he's terrified of losing you."
Hannah showed a thoughtful expression, seemingly recognizing this truth.
"Oscar took care of everything and drove recklessly, following your route. At first, Theodore and I didn't understand why he drove off alone, and Theodore kept complaining he only cared about his girl. We didn't realize until the accident that he was prepared to die for you; he simply didn't want to involve us."
Hannah's heart sank. She never wanted him to do that for her.
"When Theodore and I arrived, I was shocked to see Oscar driving recklessly, hitting the car heading towards you. I knew he loved you, but not this much," Manuel said, looking at her. "I've checked the damage to both cars. He went all out. He was ready to die, crashing at full speed without hesitation. If he'd hesitated, that car would have hit you and Jimmy. You would be the one in bed, not Oscar!"
Hannah remembered the moment of impact, the crashing sound, and the feeling of being saved. She would never forget it.
