Chapter 223: The Extreme Conditions

โ€œNo!โ€ Justine exclaimed angrily. โ€œIโ€™m fine with the first four conditions, but I canโ€™t accept the fifth. Manuel is badly wounded. The doctor said heโ€™ll need at least two weeks in the hospital. How can he possibly have a wedding in a week?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve made my decision,โ€ Susan said firmly. โ€œI canโ€™t guarantee I wonโ€™t regret it later. You all know why I agreed to marry Manuel.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Manuel agreed.

Susan glanced at Manuel, then steeled herself and refused to compromise. Manuel knew sheโ€™d set these extreme conditions to embarrass him, to show her lack of care.

โ€œI said no!โ€ Justine insisted. โ€œYou have to postpone the wedding. Besides, you wonโ€™t even be able to get out of bed, let alone sit in a wheelchair!โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter. He can lie in bed, and I donโ€™t mind marrying him that way. Iโ€™m not looking forward to the wedding anyway,โ€ Susan said indifferently.

โ€œEven so, you should consider Manuelโ€™s health. Heโ€™s badly wounded because of you! Canโ€™t you compromise for him?โ€

โ€œIf I hadnโ€™t compromised, do you think I would agree to marry him?โ€ Susan retorted sarcastically.

Justine was furious. She would never have agreed to the marriage if Manuel hadnโ€™t been so badly wounded, or if he hadnโ€™t insisted.

โ€œMum,โ€ Manuel said, โ€œThe doctor said Iโ€™ll be fine. I believe I can sit in a wheelchair in a week. Donโ€™t worry. I know my own health best.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve lost yourself in Susan!โ€ Justine said, disappointed. She couldnโ€™t understand Manuelโ€™s obsession. Heโ€™d always been sweet and independent, but heโ€™d abandoned his principles for Susan.

โ€œTake your time to discuss it, and let me know. But I donโ€™t have much patience. If I donโ€™t hear from you by tonight, our wedding willโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo need to discuss it. Weโ€™ll get married as you wished,โ€ Manuel interrupted.

Susan had mixed feelings. Sheโ€™d deliberately made things difficult for Manuel, but she wasnโ€™t happy about embarrassing him. She was marrying Manuel in a week.

She sighed and said, โ€œMake the wedding as simple as possible. No procession or anything. Just the church ceremony. And no more than fifty guests.โ€

โ€œAre you kidding me?โ€ Edward protested. โ€œI have hundreds of business partners. We should invite far more than fifty!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my wedding. It has nothing to do with your business partners!โ€

Edward and Justine were speechless.

โ€œIf you want to invite all your friends and business partners, hold a divorce party. You can invite as many guests as you like then,โ€ Susan added.

Edward felt a headache coming on.

โ€œNo problem. No more than fifty guests,โ€ Manuel conceded.

Susan glanced at Manuel, believing he would eventually realize their marriage wouldn't be happy. She turned to leave, her eyes red with unshed tears. She knew she had no room to maneuver.

She left the hospital, took a cab home. Her eyes were red and swollen, but she held back her tears. She didn't think weeping over Manuel was worthwhile.

โ€œYoung lady, are you alright? Donโ€™t lose hope, whateverโ€™s wrong. Be positive! Medical technology is advanced; youโ€™ll be fine with proper treatment,โ€ the middle-aged driver said kindly.

Susan looked at the driver. He thought she had cancer. His words were surprisingly comforting. She just needed to get through this, until Manuel realized they werenโ€™t a good match.

She wiped her tears and called Hannah.

โ€œHello, Susan.โ€ Hannah was in bed.

Susan didn't even remember getting home. She'd come back from the hospital, thenโ€ฆ the call.

โ€œIโ€™m marrying Manuel,โ€ she said, as if announcing the end of the world.

โ€œCongratulations!โ€ Hannahโ€™s response was calm. She'd foreseen this; Susan had married Manuel in her previous life, and it hadn't ended well.

โ€œI feel bad,โ€ Susan sobbed.

Hannah could offer little comfort. She couldn't reveal much, but she would help Susan change her life.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how this marriage will endโ€ฆโ€ Susan paused. โ€œIโ€™m afraid Iโ€™ll be a bad woman.โ€

โ€œNo, you wonโ€™t,โ€ Hannah said. โ€œLater youโ€™ll know whoโ€™s best for you, and whom you truly love.โ€

โ€œManuel might be the best, but heโ€™s definitely not the one I love.โ€

โ€œSusanโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOkay, I gotta go,โ€ Susan said dejectedly. โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about Manuel anymore today.โ€

โ€œOkay. Pull yourself together. Trust me. Everything will be fine,โ€ Hannah said reassuringly.

โ€œYeah, I see.โ€

Susan hung up.

Hannah considered, then called Manuel.

โ€œHi, Hannah.โ€ Manuelโ€™s voice was gentle.

โ€œSusan told me sheโ€™s marrying you.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Manuel added, โ€œI did it in a rather harsh way.โ€

โ€œAt least you got what you wanted.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you hate me?โ€ Manuel was surprised.

โ€œNope,โ€ Hannah said frankly. โ€œAnd I hope you win Susanโ€™s heart and love. Never give up on her, or stop loving her.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll do my best.โ€

โ€œAnd congratulations!โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€

Hannah hung up, stretched, and prepared to get out of bed.

โ€œHannah.โ€ A voice startled her.

She whirled around to see Oscar on the couch. Had he been there all along? How had she not noticed?

โ€œOscar! I was on the phone! You shouldnโ€™t have eavesdropped!โ€ she exclaimed angrily.

โ€œWhat? Are you cheating on me? Whatโ€™s the problem?โ€ Oscar said lightly.
