โI will not apologize to Hannah!โ Martina screamed in the living room.
โIโm serious,โ Charles replied, unwilling to hear Martinaโs explanation.
โHannah beat me up, and you want me to apologize? She should apologize!โ
โShe didnโt, and youโre making things up,โ Charles said.
โShe did! Why didnโt you believe me? Susan and Hannah attacked me!โ Martina panicked.
โHannah was polite and gentle. She wouldnโt have attacked you.โ
โShe did! She did!โ Martinaโs voice rose, escalating the scene in the living room. She couldnโt believe Charles didnโt believe her.
โIโm sick of your screams. Apologize to Hannah tomorrow.โ
โNo!โ
โMartina, do you want to bankrupt our family?โ
โWe probably should!โ Martina retorted capriciously.
Loretta learned of the situation and threatened Martina, โStop acting like a brat, or Iโll be angry with you too.โ
โMother, why didnโt you believe me either?โ
โI donโt care if what you said is true. Apologize to Hannah tomorrow.โ
โMother!โ Martina cried, upset.
โIt doesnโt matter if Hannah attacked you. Our familyโs priority is your brotherโs marriage to Hannah. You must appease her; you offended her. Do what you want after the wedding. Until then, put on a mask around her.โ
Martina felt aggrieved and continued crying.
โMartina, youโre not a child. Set your priorities straight. Donโt worry; even if you apologize to Hannah tomorrow, Iโll help you get even with her.โ
Martina ignored Loretta, sobbing uncontrollably.
โItโs Michelleโs 50th birthday tomorrow. Iโll shame her,โ Loretta consoled Martina. โHer daughter bullied you, and Iโll make her pay.โ
Martina wiped her tears. โHow?โ
โMichelleโs always had dreadful taste. Iโll wear my best dress tomorrow and steal the spotlight. Weโre future in-laws, constantly compared. When people talk, Michelle will be ashamed. I wonder what gives her the nerve to have a 50th birthday party.โ Lorettaโs disgust was palpable.
The upper-class societyโs male chauvinism was evident. Loretta envied Michelle's ability to host a 50th birthday celebration. She always held a superior position among the wealthy wives, boasting a loving husband, a capable son, and an obedient daughter; all the other wives fawned over her. This inflated her sense of self-importance. Yet, she'd never thrown her own grand birthday party. Michelle, previously insignificant in their circle, had thrown a lavish party, which infuriated Loretta. Tomorrow, Loretta would show Michelle the folly of such ostentation.
The next afternoon, the Cooper manor's living room bustled with activity. Michelle was surprised; she knew nothing of the party. The event crew's preparations further confused her.
โWeโre celebrating your birthday with Father, right? So I planned a surprise for both of you,โ Hannah explained.
โSilly child. We have birthdays every year. No need for surprises. Donโt startle your father.โ
โHe wonโt be,โ Hannah said, unhappy. โNow, go get a facial, makeup, and change.โ
โYouโre so mischievous.โ
โHurry,โ Hannah urged, pushing her mother toward the event crew.
โArenโt you coming?โ Michelle asked. Hannah usually accompanied Michelle during at-home beauty treatments.
โI donโt need it. Iโm naturally beautiful,โ Hannah joked.
Michelle laughed. โYouโre shameless.โ
โGo. Iโll catch up and get ready with you.โ
โAlright,โ Michelle conceded, unable to withstand her daughterโs persistence. She left with the crew.
Once Michelle was gone, Hannah quickly briefed the decorators on Michelle's imminent arrival and called her father to prepare. It was a busy afternoon.
After ensuring everything proceeded as planned, Hannah entered her motherโs room. Michelle had just finished her facial. Her cheeks were smooth and supple, like a young girlโs skin.
โMother, how do you maintain your skin? Itโs perfect,โ Hannah praised.
โYouโre right. She has the nicest skin for her age,โ the beautician agreed. โIโd guess sheโs in her thirties if I didnโt know better.โ
โYouโre just being nice,โ Michelle blushed.
โItโs true. You have perfect skin and a great figure. You look like a young girl from behind.โ
โOh, stop it. Iโm not that great,โ Michelleโs face flushed.
Hannah found her mother adorable. Her father was lucky to have her.
โIs she changing into her gown?โ Hannah asked a crew member.
โYes, weโre doing it now.โ
The crew produced a long black gown studded with diamonds, sparkling like stars. It was breathtaking.
โIsnโt it flashy?โ Michelle exclaimed, surprised.
โIt should be. Youโll charm Father speechless.โ
โWeโre an old couple. No need for this,โ Michelle protested. โSomething simpler. Donโt scare him.โ
โI designed it,โ Hannah revealed.
This touched Michelle. She knew Hannah had been a gifted designer since childhood, but the Coopers kept it private. Seeing Hannahโs disappointment, Michelle couldnโt refuse.
โMother, will you wear it?โ Hannah pleaded.
Michelle smiled, resigned. โOf course. Itโs my daughterโs design.โ
Michelle went into the dressing room. When she emerged, Hannah was astonished by her motherโs beauty. Michelle's mature charm, elegance, and grace were captivating.
