Chapter 284 Jealousy

โ€œManuel has no interest in business. You should know that. Otherwise, your position at Phillips Bank would already be his,โ€ Martina stated bluntly. โ€œOnce I secure Manuel, we wonโ€™t interfere in business. My brother seeks political advancement, but he'll need a business partner. That will be you.โ€

Henry stared at Martina silently. He was tempted, yet cautious. It was a significant opportunity. According to Martina, he'd not only gain control of Phillips Bank but also a powerful ally. Charles, she claimed, was thriving in politics and poised for success.

โ€œFine,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ll cooperate.โ€ He couldn't resist the allure.

โ€œSmart people understand the game,โ€ Martina smirked. โ€œHenry, working with my family guarantees you a position and wealth beyond your wildest dreams.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Henry replied. He remained remarkably calm after her optimistic forecast, simply asking, โ€œWhatโ€™s next?โ€

โ€œSimple,โ€ Martina said. โ€œSusan likes you; it's obvious. She married Manuel out of necessity. Pursue her, reignite the relationship, and their marriage will dissolve. It'll take time for a divorce, giving me ample opportunity to console and win over Manuel. We'll both get who we want.โ€

Henry shook his head. The plan seemed overly simplistic. โ€œItโ€™s not that easy. Manuel worked hard to marry Susan. He won't relinquish her easily. Even if I pursue her, success isn't guaranteed. He could easily retaliate; he only refrains because he fears Susan's wrath.โ€

Martina's face darkened.

โ€œWe can discuss that later,โ€ Henry said, sensing her lack of a concrete plan. โ€œWe've agreed to cooperate. We can strategize later.โ€

โ€œAgreed,โ€ Martina replied readily. Seeking immediate results was unwise.

โ€œThe fewer people who know about our cooperation, the better,โ€ Henry cautioned.

โ€œDon't worry. Only my brother will know.โ€

Henry nodded, checked for onlookers, then left. Martina watched him go before returning to the garden. The hall buzzed with activity. Hannah stood beside her father, greeting guests. The anniversary celebration was extravagant, attended by business magnates and high-ranking officials stationed in Kensbury Cityโ€”nearly half the city's elite.

โ€œOscar, you're in politics now. I have contacts at City Hall. Let me introduce you,โ€ Miguel said, pulling Oscar aside. Their connection to city officials, despite limited ties to core aristocratic families, was expected.

Hannah watched them go, a flicker of resentment surfacing. She wondered about her father's true affections and felt a pang of embarrassment at being left behind.

โ€œHannah,โ€ Michelle called.

Hannah turned.

โ€œYour grandmother caused trouble again yesterday,โ€ Michelle sighed, both sharing a mutual displeasure regarding Lorie.

โ€œDon't worry. I'll handle it.โ€

โ€œRogerโ€™s in jail, his assets seized. Grandma's broke. She'll cause more trouble.โ€

โ€œNo matter what she does, she can't seriously harm us. The media supports us; even if she claims unfair treatment, no outlet will publish her story. She's lost her leverage,โ€ Hannah stated confidently.

Michelle agreed, increasingly impressed by her daughter's capabilities.

โ€œMom,โ€ Hannah said, a sudden thought striking her.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Michelle asked, startled.

โ€œGrandma ate crow after confronting Dad and me. She might try the same with you. Don't show her pity. We need to teach her a lesson; otherwise, this will continue,โ€ Hannah warned.

โ€œUnderstood. I won't be lenient.โ€

Hannah smiled, pleased with her mother's shift in demeanor. Past compromises had nearly destroyed their family. This time, that wouldn't happen.

She spotted Mary and Wayne. Their presence surprised her. Were they not afraid of the embarrassment associated with their father?

โ€œAre Wayne and Mary causing trouble at the company?โ€ Michelle asked, also noticing them.

โ€œNot significantly. They lack the cunning to truly threaten me,โ€ Hannah responded.

โ€œStill, be vigilant,โ€ Michelle advised.

โ€œI will.โ€

Michelle excused herself to join some friends, her elevated social standing after her 50th birthday party earning her newfound acquaintances. Loretta, witnessing this, was furious. Once the queen of social circles, Michelle had surpassed her.

Loretta had dressed meticulously to impress, only to be outshone by Michelle's elegant gown. Compared to Michelle, Loretta seemed gaudy and uncouth. Her resentment intensified.

She turned to Charles. โ€œDestroy the Coopers. I demand their subjugation!โ€ Meanwhile, Charles was captivated by Hannah, her simple dress unable to diminish her stunning presence. Heโ€™d been drawn to her the moment he entered.
