Chapter 292: I Try to Be a Good Person
Finally, Susan called her father.
"Have you decided?" Edward asked indifferently.
Susan took a deep breath. "Okay," she said, "I'll go to work tomorrow."
Edward, though excited, tried to remain calm. "Report to human resources tomorrow."
"What about my salary?" Susan asked bluntly.
"Ten thousand per month."
"I'd rather not work," Susan fumed.
"Besides your salary, your credit card will be unfrozen," Edward added. She would have all her money plus the monthly salary if she worked.
This seemed to improve Susan's mood.
"Is that alright?" Edward asked.
"No problem, but don't expect much from me. I'm only good at playing games."
"I'll arrange training."
"That depends on whether I want to learn," Susan retorted disdainfully.
"Poor performance results in dismissal. If fired, you'll revert to your current situationโno pay and a frozen credit card."
"..."
Susan was taken aback by the thinly veiled threat, but it worked. She agreed to go to work.
"Attendance is at 9:00 a.m., don't be late."
"I see," Susan said impatiently. "Can you unfreeze my card now?"
"When you start work."
"Come on!"
"That's all then," Edward said, hanging up. Susan remained furious; Edward's indifference angered her to the point of nearly throwing her phone.
Since marrying Manuel and her father's divorce from Justine, the world seemed against her. Anger consumed her.
Hannah received a call from Edward, thanking her for Susan's agreement to work. Hannah offered polite replies. Getting Susan to work was only the first step; making her work hard would be a much longer process.
"You've been giving me the cold shoulder all day," Oscar said, sitting on the sofa and smiling at Hannah.
"You're neglecting your family?" Hannah asked, putting down the phone.
Oscar frowned, seemingly puzzled.
"Theodore," Hannah said, "Don't you need to balance your family relationships? Must you always play games?"
"..." Oscar was speechless.
He pulled Hannah into his arms. She barely had time to react before he held her close.
"Not him," Oscar murmured against Hannah's hair.
If not Theodore, then who?
"You'll know someday."
"Male or female?" Hannah asked.
"Do you care?"
"Never mind. I'm just clarifying your sexual orientation."
"I don't need verification. You can find out now," Oscar said, his body reacting.
"Oscar!"
Were men always consumed by such thoughts?
"You were flirting with me."
What had she done to flirt?
Before Hannah could respond, Oscar kissed her. Max entered, petrified by the passionate scene; his face flushed crimson with embarrassment.
Hannah, seeing Max, quickly pushed Oscar away. Oscar smiled and released her, afraid of losing control. He always intended to tease, but it was always he who felt uncomfortable.
Hannah's face was red. Max, worried he'd interrupted, said, "No need to rush dinner."
Who wanted to rush? Hannah didn't know what Oscar would have done if they hadn't been interrupted.
Hannah fled to the dining tableโan escape.
Oscar touched his lips, barely containing his lust. He sat opposite Hannah. They had become increasingly comfortable with each other.
"The election is next week," Oscar said suddenly.
Hannah paused. "A bid for chief of staff?"
"That's right."
"Will you be giving speeches?" Hannah asked. Northfield elections used a voting system; Kensbury City required an open vote and thus, a campaign tour.
"I'll plan the canvassing with my team tomorrow."
"How many candidates?"
"Just me and Charles Sawyer."
Hannah frowned.
"Everyone else knows they have no chance and are afraid of offending me or him, so they didn't run."
Hannah nodded; it made sense. Only Oscar and Charles were qualified.
"Anything I can do?"
"Not yet. But I may be too busy to spend time with you."
"It's fine," she thought. Better not, considering his tendency to molest her.
"Dinner," Oscar reminded.
Hannah nodded, then worriedly said, "Don't let him defeat you."
"Don't you trust me?" Oscar's expression shifted.
"Charles is insidious and cunning."
"So you think I'm a good person?" Oscar smiled.
Hannah was shocked, then relieved. An honest Oscar would have been killed countless times by Charles in her past life.
"I try to be a good person," Oscar said, like a promise.
Hannah remembered his previous claim of not being a good person. This change touched her.
Was he changing for her? And how did he define "a good person"?
"If I win, how about you give yourself to me sexually?" Oscar asked.
Hannah regained composure. "Didn't I say I'd wait until your bright future?"
"Isn't the chief executive position a splendid future?"
"Why not hold yourself to higher standards?" Hannah was speechless. He should at least aim for the highest office within the aristocratic families.
