Listen to this chapter:

Looking out the window, she hung up the phone. Even she was surprised at her willingness to drop everything upon learning of Oscar's potential danger.

Biting her lip, she urged herself to remain calm. Their marriage, after all, was a form of partnership; his peril jeopardized that partnership.

As she pondered, she saw Jimmy approaching the expressway. A black car suddenly stopped in front. Frowning, she saw Theodore emerge and approach her car. Hannah opened the door.

"You don't need to go. I'll handle it. I'll let you know if I hear anything."

It took a moment to realize he was referring to Langley Town.

"Why?" she asked.

"Aren't you busy? You should be focusing on work."

"I am, but I need to know what's happening with Oscar. He's not answering his phone; it's been off all this time. That's unusual."

"That's why I'm going to see what happened."

"Why can't I go with you?"

"It's dangerous there!" Theodore replied frankly.

Hannah paused, surprised. Something was clearly amiss.

"Oscar wouldn't want you in danger. Stay here. I'll update you."

"You said it's dangerous, and that's precisely why I need to be there. As his wife, I can't sit idly by if something bad happens to him!" Hannah insisted.

"You'll only cause trouble!" Theodore stated plainly.

"I'll leave if I become a problem. I promise I won't be a burden!" Hannah assured him.

"You don't know what the world is truly like! Oscar has shown you only the good side. The evilโ€ฆ"

"You mean death? I don't care!" Hannah interrupted sharply.

Theodore was taken aback by her unexpected courage.

"I know I seem like a liability, but I can't relax at home if something bad happens to him! If the worst were to happen, do you think I could continue my life alone? Theodore, if you've ever truly loved someone, you wouldn't sit by and do nothing."

In that moment, she acknowledged her love for Oscar. That's why she would go to him, no matter the cost. Theodore hesitated, then conceded.

"Alright, but if there's any danger, you leave immediately if I say so! No arguments!"

"Okay." Hannah agreed.

Theodore joined them in the passenger seat.

Initially, Hannah thought it might be an accident; Oscar might not even be there. But Theodore's growing seriousness heightened her alarm.

Five hours later, they reached the Langley Town hospital, where casualties were being sent. Hannah requested the casualty list.

After careful examination, she thankfully didn't find Oscar's name, though her hands trembled. She checked again, confirming his survival.

Hannah quickly told Theodore, "He's not on the list of the dead."

"Nor seriously injured," Theodore added, nodding.

She then checked the list of minor injuries. Again, Oscar's name was absent.

"Wait," Hannah said, retrieving the list.

Theodore turned to her. "What is it?"

"Thoth! He's Oscar's assistant! He was with Oscar."

They had been at the factory during the explosion. Panic seized Hannah.

Theodore hurried to Thoth's ward, Hannah following. The hospital overflowed with casualties; each ward held three injured people.

Police were present. One stopped them. "What are you doing?"

"Thoth, we're his family. We want to visit him," Theodore replied.

"Thoth? He's being transferred to another ward. Come help us."

"Transferred? Why?" Hannah asked, confused.

"Stop asking," the officer said, annoyed. Something was wrong.

They moved Thoth to another ward, assisted by medical staff. Thoth recognized Hannah.

"Mrs. Wells, Mr. Wells went after the drug dealer himself!"

"What?" Hannah was stunned. A drug dealer?

"After our lecture tour, we noticed something wrong with the fireworks factory. It was a drug manufacturing facility. Mr. Wells wanted to expose it. He infiltrated the factory, but was discovered before he got any evidence. The dealer blew up the factory to destroy the evidence. Mr. Wells and I survived. While I waited for an ambulance, he told me to stay and went after the dealer. We've lost contact with him," Thoth explained urgently.

Hannah felt a surge of frantic terror.

"The police noticed I wasn't a factory worker, so they separated me from the others. Everyone in the hospital is involved in the drug operation, but their boss escaped. That's why Mr. Wells went after him," Thoth added.

Was he insane? Drug dealers were extremely dangerous!
