Chapter 328: It Is Time to Give Yourself to Me
The online release of Charles's election withdrawal video ignited a national uproar. No one anticipated the leading candidate's sudden announcement, especially with the results still undetermined.
He publicly stated his belief that Oscar was better suited for the chief administrative officer position, impressed by Oscar's abilities and courage. He felt eclipsed and voluntarily withdrew. These few words demonstrated his acknowledgment of Oscar's strengths and his own magnanimity, unexpectedly bolstering his popularity.
While some online criticized Charles for his perceived inaction against Oscar, others praised his manly and respectable decision. Naturally, anti-Oscar sentiment remained, with insults like "bitch" going viral. Critics claimed Charles' withdrawal was a calculated move born of electoral disadvantage, a grandstanding performance characteristic of a "bitch."
This sparked intense online controversy. Ultimately, however, Charles's decision proved advantageous; at least he avoided a reputational defeat.
Hannah remained silent after hearing the news, surprised by Charles's abrupt action. Knowing him, she expected a fight, not a voluntary surrender. His ambition for power was immense; this sudden resignation hinted at external pressure.
Who was behind it? Hannah knew the truthโCharles's past collusion with Sarah Collins. The Collins family, perhaps impressed by his abilities, had likely approached him. But Charles was ultimately a fraud.
However, with Hannah's guidance, Charles had avoided a humiliating defeat in their previous life. This time, his shortcomings were exposed, yet their investment in his plan made a simple withdrawal difficult; they'd likely attempted to maintain his image.
Absorbed in the news, Hannah pondered a deeper conspiracy behind Charles's move, believing he wouldn't compromise so easily.
"Wake up so early?" a deep voice interrupted her thoughts.
Hannah turned to see the heavy-eyed man behind her. She noticed something odd. Oscar, usually a light sleeper, seemed soundly asleep beside her. It was only after over half an hourโand after she'd digested the newsโthat he awoke, displaying a lazy, contented look, as if well-rested.
"Charles announced his withdrawal," Hannah said.
Oscar was clearly shocked. After a pause, he simply said, "Smarter."
His almost sneering tone suggested condescension toward Charles.
"I think someone pressured him," Hannah commented bluntly. "It's difficult for a man like him to relinquish power."
"Almost," Oscar added.
"Even if he conceded, he wouldn't accept your success. Charles's underhanded tactics are appalling."
"So how did you fall in love with him?" Oscar, using his uninjured hand for support, asked seriously.
Hannah was speechless, acutely aware of her past folly. How could she admit her naivetรฉ?
She changed the subject. "The point is, Charles might still try to undermine us."
"Let him," Oscar said nonchalantly. "No matter what he does, it will be a complete defeat."
Hannah was at a loss for words. Charles was undeniably vulnerable against Oscar; his schemes always backfired, making him appear foolish.
"Hannah," Oscar approached, causing her to frown. His proximity felt ominous.
"Now that Charles has withdrawn, I've effectively won the election," Oscar said, a slight curl to his lips. "I'm Northfield's youngest chief official."
Hannah found him overly smug, believing even in his success, modesty was warranted.
"So it is time to give yourself to me."
Hannah was stunned. What did his promotion have to do with that?
"Didn't we agree you'd fulfill my desires when my future brightened?" Oscar asked seriously. "Did I misunderstand?"
"Oscar, are you so petty? Does being chief official equate to a bright future?" Hannah raised an eyebrow.
"How high are your standards for me?" Oscar asked, clearly testing her.
"As high as you believe they are," Hannah replied.
Oscar's brow furrowed.
"Get up," Hannah said, wanting to avoid the sensitive topic. "The families will announce your appointment soon. You should prepare."
As she moved, Oscar pulled her back. Before she could resist, he whispered, "You can easily touch my wounds."
Damn it. Should he be appeased?
Hannah calmed herself. This man always knew her weaknesses.
"Hannah, do you know the meaning of 'a bright future'?" Oscar pressed, his seriousness unsettling.
What was he up to?
