Oscarโs hopes had been dashed, leaving him upset. Hannah struggled to comfort him, but she genuinely intended to support him this time.
The next morning, after two days' rest, they went to work separately. At breakfast, Oscar looked at his phone; a number appeared: "9060."
Hannah frowned. "What does it mean?"
"9059," Oscar replied.
Hannah wondered if he was in a trance.
"9058."
"Are you possessed?" she asked.
"No," Oscar said, lowering his phone. "I'm timing."
"Why?" Hannah asked, puzzled.
"To see how long until your period ends," he explained.
Speechless, Hannah silently ate, refusing to speak. Noticing her reaction, Oscar chuckled affectionately.
After breakfast, they went out. Jimmy drove Oscar first; he was to follow Hannah to work. Hannah examined the bandage on Oscar's hand. "Are you sure you can work with this? A few more days off wouldn't hurt."
"They told me to go," Oscar replied. Hannah frowned.
"The election results are announced today," Oscar said, "and I'm supposed to take office."
With Charles's resignation, his anticipation seemed possible. City Hall likely intended to capitalize on the news.
They arrived at the site. Oscar got out.
"If the results come out, please tell me," Hannah urged.
"Okay," Oscar replied obediently.
Hannah watched as Jimmy drove away, leaving Oscar standing, watching her leave. She couldn't help but grin. Oscar's small gestures often made her happy, a stark contrast to Charles's actions in her previous life.
Hannah and Jimmy soon arrived at the Cooper building. Rose followed Hannah into her office.
For once, Rose didn't immediately begin her report. "Ms. Hannah," she said, "I admire your husband Oscar's heroic deeds."
Hannah raised an eyebrow. "Have you had a lot of free time lately?"
"No," Rose replied, "I just can't hide my feelings."
"Are you sure you're not brown-nosing?" Hannah asked.
"Fifty percent, at most," Rose said seriously.
Hannah chuckled. Rose wasn't so boring after all. "Report the work, please," Hannah said.
"Yes," Rose replied. "During your absence, several departments completed work according to your requirements. This is the most important progress for each department. Please review."
Hannah examined the documents.
"The Municipal Bureau of Land Management is working on a major new city construction projectโthe South Bay New Town. A tender will be announced soon. I've done a preliminary check; the transaction will likely reach ten billion. This should be our top priority," Rose explained.
"Yes," Hannah agreed. "I knew about this project in Kensbury City. It's huge; success isn't optional."
"While we shouldn't be arrogant, we are urban construction experts. No one in the country is more suitable. It's about the city's image, and I think we have a good chance," Rose added.
Hannah shook her head. It was too early to say. In her previous life, she'd asked her father to withdraw, but the Cooper Group might still have failed due to Charles's treachery and the Sawyer's underhanded tactics. This life, however, was unpredictable.
"Do you think something will happen?" Rose asked.
"We should be careful," Hannah said. "Tell public relations to request the bidding plan from the bureau. Inform me immediately of any news."
"Okay," Rose said. "Still black coffee?"
"No coffee today," Hannah said. "Lemonade, extra sugar, please."
"Are you pregnant, Ms. Hannah?" Rose asked.
Hannah nearly exclaimed, "What do you think?"
"Oh, I assumed because you wanted something acidic," Rose explained.
"I said more sugar," Hannah corrected.
"I was speculating," Rose said, feeling wronged. "You've been married a while. Isn't it normal to get pregnant?"
"Less gossip, or I'll give you more work!" Hannah snapped.
Rose closed her mouth and left. Hannah was annoyed; pregnancy and childbirth were constant topics. Even if she slept with Oscar, she wasn't ready for children. Such a decision required careful thought.
Hannah focused on her work. At 11 am, Oscar called.
"Oscar," Hannah said, a hint of excitement in her voice. She told herself she was only anticipating news of his appointment.
"Good news and bad news. Which first?" Oscar asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Two pieces of news. Which first, Hannah?"
"One is bad," Hannah said, feeling inexplicably nervous.
"Bad for me."
Hannah paused.
"Good news first," she said.
"I was appointed. The announcement will be published soon, within half an hour."
"What's the bad news?" Hannah asked. The good news wasn't as exciting as she thought it would be.
