Listen to this chapter:

The doctor gave Hannah a curious look, as if she were foolish. Hannah quickly responded, "No, she probably hasn't." Susan, always careless, likely hadn't taken her contraception, Hannah assumed.

"Based on her symptomsโ€”nausea and lack of appetiteโ€”she's probably pregnant. I suggest she see a gynecologist. If she's not pregnant, she can return for an endoscopy."

"No way! I can't be pregnant! It was just one night! Impossible!" Panic seized Susan.

"You'll know after a gynecological exam."

Before Susan could argue, Hannah pulled her away. "Let's get checked first."

"No! Hannah, I can't be pregnant!" Tears welled in Susan's eyes.

"You need to get checked."

"No, I don't want a check-up!"

"Susan, you have to face it if it's true," Hannah said seriously.

Susan, distressed, bit her lip, tears glistening in her eyes. Seeing her distress, Hannah softened. "We can deal with it after the check-up." She took Susan's hand and led her to a gynecologist's office.

Reluctantly, Susan entered.

"When was your last period?" the doctor asked.

Susan remained silent. Hannah intervened, "Around this time last month."

"Did she have her period this month?"

"Probably not."

"When did she have sex?"

"The sixth of this month," Hannah replied after a moment's thought.

After a brief calculation, the doctor said, "That was likely her ovulation date. She's probably pregnant, but it's too early for a Doppler ultrasound or urine test. I recommend a blood test to check her hormone levels. Here's the bill. After payment, you can have the blood test."

"Thank you, doctor," Hannah said.

They paid and went for the blood test.

"Can I skip this? I hate needles!" Susan pleaded.

"No."

Susan was speechless. Hannah teased, "Come on, you've been bolder than this, haven't you?"

"Stop teasing! I regret it! I should have taken contraception the next day! I wouldn't be so panicked!"

"It's destiny."

"Destiny my ass!" Susan cursed.

Hannah knew this would be devastating news if Susan were pregnant.

Ten minutes later, it was Susan's turn. She endured the blood draw.

"The results will be on the machine in half an hour," the nurse said.

"Thank you," Hannah replied.

They waited in the corridor. Susan hugged herself, silent. Hannah remained quiet, nervous herself. Secretly, she hoped Susan was pregnant, yet feared the opposite.

Hannah suddenly stood.

"What are you doing?" Susan grabbed her arm.

"Let me see the results."

"No!" Susan stopped her.

"Girl, calm down," Hannah said. "You can check it in half an hour." Susan insisted.

Hannah sat down. Half an hour later, she stood again. Susan instinctively grabbed her arm.

"It's been half an hour," Hannah reminded.

"I need to prepare myself," Susan said nervously.

Hannah remained silent. Susan took a deep breath.

"Are you ready?" Hannah urged.

After a pause, Susan said, "Okay."

Hannah approached the machine, even more nervous than she would be checking her own results. She entered the number, retrieved the report, and began reading carefully.

Susan's heart pounded. Hannah didn't approach her for a long time.

"Is it a mistake?" Susan asked urgently.

Hannah smiled. "Congratulations."

Susan sighed with relief. Thank goodness, she wasn't pregnant. It had only been one night.

But then Hannah added, "You are pregnant."

Susan felt frozen. Hannah had said "congratulations," implying she wasn't pregnant. It must be a mistake.

"I didn't expect you to be a mother so soon," Hannah smiled.

"I need an abortion!" Susan decided instantly.

"Hannah, make an appointment. I need an abortion immediately!" Susan tried to remain calm.

"Susan, calm down! An abortion will harm you. Don't make a rash decision!"

"I know what I'm doing. I don't want this child! I don't want a baby with Manuel!"

"The child is innocent. You're married to him; it's natural to have a child. Let's consult the doctor about the effects of alcohol on the baby."

"I don't want this baby!" Susan remained adamant.

Hannah's tone hardened. "You can't decide alone! Manuel has a right to know and to decide."

"It's my uterus! I have the final say!" Susan screamed.

"Don't be willful!"

"I hate it! I can't believe Manuel got me pregnant!" Susan wept.
