โSusan is pregnant!โ Martina exclaimed as soon as Henry answered the phone.
Silence followed.
โItโs Manuelโs child!โ she snapped. Grinding her teeth, she felt a burning rage. She couldn't accept that another woman would bear Manuel's child. She simply couldn't.
Henry tightened his grip on the phone. โHow do you know?โ he asked coldly.
โI saw Susan shopping at the mall with Manuel and his motherโฆโ Martinaโs voice rose, recalling the scene. โI wanted to kill her!โ
Henryโs face darkened. He hadnโt expected Susanโs pregnancy. Remembering a recent promise to Susan, he felt regret and fury.
โHenry! This is all your fault, you useless man! Youโre the reason theyโre sleeping together, the reason sheโs carrying Manuelโs baby. You cowardโฆโ
โEnough!โ Henryโs already bad mood worsened under Martinaโs insults. His voice hardened. โSusan is pregnant because you reap what you sow. It wouldn't have happened if you hadn't resorted to underhanded tactics!โ
โHuh?โ Martina sneered. โHenry, you don't get to lecture me. Yes, I used underhanded tactics, but youโre hardly blameless! At least I acted out of love. What about you? You pursued her with ulterior motives and took advantage of her. You big jerk!โ
Henryโs face paled.
โDon't think you're fooling anyone. My brother already knows what kind of man you are. Don't pretend to be someone you're not,โ Martina said fiercely, her contempt evident.
Henryโs hand trembled with rage.
โHenry, youโd better behave, or Iโll kill you. My brother only keeps you alive because he finds you useful. After everything youโve done, you think those nude photos will intimidate me?โ Martina spat.
Henry was mortified, though he knew her threat was credible. The Sawyer family could easily dispose of him. He craved power, a position where no one could bully him, a place of dominance overlooking the world.
โWhat? Why are you silent now?โ Martina continued her sarcastic barrage. โWeren't you just so arrogant?โ
โI have feelings too, and Iโm upset about Susanโs pregnancy. Youโre right, I exploited her, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to let her go to another man,โ Henry explained, his anger subsiding.
Martinaโs sarcastic smile widened.
โWe canโt let Susan keep the baby,โ Henry stated firmly. โI need time to figure this out.โ
โYou better hurry! I canโt stand the thought of her carrying his child for another day.โ
โOkay.โ
After hanging up, Martina dialed her brotherโs number, immediately dissolving into tears. The aggressive woman whoโd just berated Henry was replaced by a vulnerable, heartbroken figure.
โCharles,โ she sobbed.
Charles frowned. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โSusan is pregnant,โ Martina wailed.
โItโs none of your business,โ Charles responded indifferently. He didnโt care about Susan. But the thought of Hannah and Oscarโs child caused his face to pale, forcing him to suppress the thought.
โCharles, the father is Manuel! I canโt accept it! I love him so much! I canโt bear another woman having his child!โ Martina cried. โYou have to help me!โ
โWhatโs so great about him? If he hadnโt lost his leg, he might have inherited the Phillips Bank fortune. Now heโs an invalid. Why do you still love him?โ
โI love him, thatโs all. Nothing will change my mind. Iโll love him forever, rich or poor, able-bodied or disabled. I canโt live without himโฆโ
โShut up!โ Charles snapped. โYouโre working with Henry, right? Let him find a way to abort the baby.โ
โBut Iโm afraid heโs useless! Heโs a coward!โ
โDonโt underestimate him,โ Charles said. โHeโs risen from nothing. Heโs a force to be reckoned with. In some ways, heโs like me.โ
โYou overestimate him,โ Martina scoffed. โDonโt compare him to you.โ In her mind, no one compared to her brother. Not even Manuel.
โYou and Henry need to sort this out. If I can help, I will, but Iโm busy securing the South Bay project.โ
โCan you do that? I hear the Cooper Group is also bidding.โ Martina asked.
โHannah, that bitch, ruined my plans!โ Charles gritted his teeth, consumed by rage. He wanted to destroy her.
โShe deserves to die!โ Martina agreed vehemently. โWhen you have everything, you must kill her!โ
โOf course,โ Charles said, a cruel glint in his eye. โI have things to do. Deal with Susanโs baby yourself.โ
โOkay.โ
After the call, Charles felt a familiar irritation, a gnawing unease whenever he thought of Hannah. His eyes darkened. He dialed a number.
โHello, Sandra.โ
โHi, Mr. Sawyer,โ Sandra, his special assistant, replied. โYou finally thought of me.โ
Charles, now working at City Hall, rarely contacted Sandra.
โI want to see you tonight, at the usual place. Youโll see how much Iโve missed you.โ
โYouโre bad!โ
โYou think Iโm bad?โ
โCharlesโฆโ
