Hannah considered ignoring his post, leaving him alone after his continued lack of results. However, she hadn't anticipated his renewed efforts.
โHeโs not capable; Iโm afraid someoneโs manipulating him.โ
Theodore admired her shrewdness, sensing the reasons behind her successful career at Cooper Group. He also began to respect Oscarโs perceptive nature, particularly regarding women. After all, Hannah had been relatively unknown before marrying him.
โRight, Iโll keep an eye on Wayne. Iโll notify you if anythingโs amiss.โ Theodore promised readily.
โThanks.โ
โAnything else?โ
โNo.โ
He immediately hung up and called Oscar.
โOscar.โ
โYeah?โ Oscarโs cold tone displeased Theodore. Oscarโs lack of contactโnot a single call in a week since leaving Kensbury Cityโirked him. The indifference stung.
Theodore suppressed his irritation. โYour wife asked me to keep an eye on Wayne.โ
โJust do as she asked.โ
โI already promised her,โ Theodore said, anticipating Oscarโs response.
โGreat.โ Oscarโs tone was perfunctory.
โAre you busy?โ
โKind of.โ
โWhat are you doing out in the boonies?โ
โA lot,โ Oscar admitted. โI need to stay busy to avoid being analyzed and framed.โ
Theodore frowned, understanding the implication. These six months were crucial; one mistake could ruin everything. And there were those who wouldn't want his return.
โAnything else?โ Oscar asked.
โNothing. When are you coming back?โ
โIt depends,โ Oscar replied. โAt least a month, or I risk being discovered.โ
โI donโt think youโve had a momentโs peace since you left!โ Theodore complained.
Oscar thought privately that he'd never known freedom.
โI gotta go. Call me if thereโs a problem.โ Oscar hung up abruptly.
Theodore replaced the phone, sensing something significant was imminent, a prospect that both excited and unsettled him.
Hannah finished work at 10:00 PM, her usual time. She sometimes wondered if her reluctance to go home stemmed from Oscar's absence.
Sitting in her car, she impulsively decided to call Susan.
โHi.โ Susanโs voice was sleepy.
โAre you asleep?โ
โYeah,โ Susan replied.
โThen go back to sleep.โ Hannah didnโt want to disturb her pregnant friend, surprised Susan was in bed so early.
โItโs okay, Iโm awake. I sleep almost twenty-four hours a day, so you wonโt be disturbing me.โ
โIs your morning sickness any better?โ Hannah asked.
โNo, not at all,โ Susan groaned. โI only feel better when Iโm asleep. When I wake up, itโs terribleโฆโ A retching sound interrupted her.
โWait a minute,โ Susan said, distressed. Hannah heard the sounds of prolonged vomiting.
After a while, Susan returned to the phone. โIโm okay now.โ
โYou feel that bad? You should go to the hospital. Could this constant vomiting affect you or the baby?โ Hannah asked.
โI donโt want to go to the hospital,โ Susan said firmly. โIโm terrified of injections.โ
โWho said youโd need an injection? I just meant you should see a doctor and ask about extra nutritional supplements for your morning sickness.โ
โIโm fine. I only throw up like this occasionally. Just seeing Justine makes me so angry I forget all about it.โ
Hannah chuckled. She knew Justine had moved in and that there was conflictโa conflict Susan was clearly losing.
โWhy are you laughing! You have no idea how infuriating she is!โ Susan complained. โShe wonโt let me wear makeup, heels, or tights, and she makes me eat chicken soup every day! Sheโs killing me! If you don't see me one day, itโs because sheโs driven me to heaven!โ
โNo, stop talking about heaven,โ Hannah chided. โHowโs Manuel? Is he alright?โ
โI donโt want to talk about him! He just watched while Justine bullied me. Do you think heโd support me?โ Susanโs anger flared at the mention of Manuel.
โI mean, is he still sleeping on the sofa?โ
โThatโs his choice.โ
โHis legs are still recovering; he needs good quality sleep. That brand of sofa is too soft for him.โ
โStop talking about him!โ Susan snapped. โI waited for your call; can you please stop mentioning him?โ
Hannah smiled faintly, understanding Susanโs avoidance tactics and underlying insecurity. She shouldnโt push her further, especially this late.
โI should go now. Take care, and call if you need anythingโฆโ
โHannah, I told you not to mention Manuel, and now youโre hanging up. Am I even important to you?โ Susanโs voice was sharp with anger.
Hannah was speechless, feeling helpless to defend herself.
โI always thought you were the most important person in my life. But youโve changed since you married Oscar! You need to reflect on that!โ Susan hung up.
Hannah offered a reluctant smile, a hint of satisfaction underlying it. Susan was finally living the life Hannah had hoped for her, free from the anguish of her past.
Hannahโs phone rang. As Susan said, she had changed since marrying Oscar; there was now one more person of paramount importance in her life.
