Listen to this chapter:

Hannah considered ignoring his post, leaving him alone after his continued lack of results. However, she hadn't anticipated his renewed efforts.

โ€œHeโ€™s not capable; Iโ€™m afraid someoneโ€™s manipulating him.โ€

Theodore admired her shrewdness, sensing the reasons behind her successful career at Cooper Group. He also began to respect Oscarโ€™s perceptive nature, particularly regarding women. After all, Hannah had been relatively unknown before marrying him.

โ€œRight, Iโ€™ll keep an eye on Wayne. Iโ€™ll notify you if anythingโ€™s amiss.โ€ Theodore promised readily.

โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œAnything else?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

He immediately hung up and called Oscar.

โ€œOscar.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ Oscarโ€™s cold tone displeased Theodore. Oscarโ€™s lack of contactโ€”not a single call in a week since leaving Kensbury Cityโ€”irked him. The indifference stung.

Theodore suppressed his irritation. โ€œYour wife asked me to keep an eye on Wayne.โ€

โ€œJust do as she asked.โ€

โ€œI already promised her,โ€ Theodore said, anticipating Oscarโ€™s response.

โ€œGreat.โ€ Oscarโ€™s tone was perfunctory.

โ€œAre you busy?โ€

โ€œKind of.โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing out in the boonies?โ€

โ€œA lot,โ€ Oscar admitted. โ€œI need to stay busy to avoid being analyzed and framed.โ€

Theodore frowned, understanding the implication. These six months were crucial; one mistake could ruin everything. And there were those who wouldn't want his return.

โ€œAnything else?โ€ Oscar asked.

โ€œNothing. When are you coming back?โ€

โ€œIt depends,โ€ Oscar replied. โ€œAt least a month, or I risk being discovered.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think youโ€™ve had a momentโ€™s peace since you left!โ€ Theodore complained.

Oscar thought privately that he'd never known freedom.

โ€œI gotta go. Call me if thereโ€™s a problem.โ€ Oscar hung up abruptly.

Theodore replaced the phone, sensing something significant was imminent, a prospect that both excited and unsettled him.

Hannah finished work at 10:00 PM, her usual time. She sometimes wondered if her reluctance to go home stemmed from Oscar's absence.

Sitting in her car, she impulsively decided to call Susan.

โ€œHi.โ€ Susanโ€™s voice was sleepy.

โ€œAre you asleep?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Susan replied.

โ€œThen go back to sleep.โ€ Hannah didnโ€™t want to disturb her pregnant friend, surprised Susan was in bed so early.

โ€œItโ€™s okay, Iโ€™m awake. I sleep almost twenty-four hours a day, so you wonโ€™t be disturbing me.โ€

โ€œIs your morning sickness any better?โ€ Hannah asked.

โ€œNo, not at all,โ€ Susan groaned. โ€œI only feel better when Iโ€™m asleep. When I wake up, itโ€™s terribleโ€ฆโ€ A retching sound interrupted her.

โ€œWait a minute,โ€ Susan said, distressed. Hannah heard the sounds of prolonged vomiting.

After a while, Susan returned to the phone. โ€œIโ€™m okay now.โ€

โ€œYou feel that bad? You should go to the hospital. Could this constant vomiting affect you or the baby?โ€ Hannah asked.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go to the hospital,โ€ Susan said firmly. โ€œIโ€™m terrified of injections.โ€

โ€œWho said youโ€™d need an injection? I just meant you should see a doctor and ask about extra nutritional supplements for your morning sickness.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine. I only throw up like this occasionally. Just seeing Justine makes me so angry I forget all about it.โ€

Hannah chuckled. She knew Justine had moved in and that there was conflictโ€”a conflict Susan was clearly losing.

โ€œWhy are you laughing! You have no idea how infuriating she is!โ€ Susan complained. โ€œShe wonโ€™t let me wear makeup, heels, or tights, and she makes me eat chicken soup every day! Sheโ€™s killing me! If you don't see me one day, itโ€™s because sheโ€™s driven me to heaven!โ€

โ€œNo, stop talking about heaven,โ€ Hannah chided. โ€œHowโ€™s Manuel? Is he alright?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about him! He just watched while Justine bullied me. Do you think heโ€™d support me?โ€ Susanโ€™s anger flared at the mention of Manuel.

โ€œI mean, is he still sleeping on the sofa?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s his choice.โ€

โ€œHis legs are still recovering; he needs good quality sleep. That brand of sofa is too soft for him.โ€

โ€œStop talking about him!โ€ Susan snapped. โ€œI waited for your call; can you please stop mentioning him?โ€

Hannah smiled faintly, understanding Susanโ€™s avoidance tactics and underlying insecurity. She shouldnโ€™t push her further, especially this late.

โ€œI should go now. Take care, and call if you need anythingโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHannah, I told you not to mention Manuel, and now youโ€™re hanging up. Am I even important to you?โ€ Susanโ€™s voice was sharp with anger.

Hannah was speechless, feeling helpless to defend herself.

โ€œI always thought you were the most important person in my life. But youโ€™ve changed since you married Oscar! You need to reflect on that!โ€ Susan hung up.

Hannah offered a reluctant smile, a hint of satisfaction underlying it. Susan was finally living the life Hannah had hoped for her, free from the anguish of her past.

Hannahโ€™s phone rang. As Susan said, she had changed since marrying Oscar; there was now one more person of paramount importance in her life.
