Listen to this chapter:

Susan answered the phone.

"Hi, Susan," Henry's gentle voice filled the receiver.

Susan was silent for a moment. Then, "Hi, Henry."

"Why haven't you been to the office lately? Are you okay?" Henry asked, feigning normalcy.

Susan hesitated, searching for words to announce her pregnancy. She was carrying Manuel's child.

He continued gently, "Do you feel well? Or did you have another fight with your dad?"

"No," Susan replied, "I'm pregnant." She chose directness.

The news silenced him. A long pause hung between them.

Tears welled in Susan's eyes. She imagined how difficult this must be for Henry, mirroring her own feelings upon learning of her pregnancy with Manuel.

"I'm sorry, Henry," she added.

"No apology needed," he chuckled. "Congratulations."

"No, please don't. You must know that hurts. I'mโ€ฆ" She trailed off.

"If that's what you want," Henry interrupted gently, "If only you were happy."

"No, I'm not! How can I be happy about having Manuel's baby?" Susan's voice was loud enough to be heard by Manuel, who was at the door.

He remained there, unheard by Susan.

"The baby is innocent," Henry said. "Don't let your feelings for Manuel affect the baby."

"I know," Susan choked back sobs. "That's why I'm keeping him. If notโ€ฆ if notโ€ฆ"

"I know," Henry offered comfort. "Susan, be kind to yourself. I understand."

"But it means it's over for us," Susan said, her heart breaking. She'd planned to divorce Manuel and return to Henry, but the baby had made that impossible. She felt trapped with Manuel for life.

"I understand," Henry said calmly. "Don't worry about me. Do what's best for you."

"Henry, how can you be so kind?" Susan asked, overwhelmed by his compassion. His kindness only intensified her pain.

"Seeing you hurt isn't what I want, Susan. Take care of yourself. I have to go."

Susan gripped the phone tightly, understanding this call was their farewell. There was no other choice. She hung up.

Officially over, Henry. Their future was gone. After the call, Susan wept. Manuel, having overheard everything from the doorway, left silently. He felt her pain but couldn't offer solace.

Hearing the dial tone, Henry's expression shifted. Despite his words about Susan's happiness, he felt her leaving him. She had given him up. He had to accept it.

But how could he? How could he relinquish the Phillips Bank property he'd coveted for so long?

A dark look settled on his face. He refused to accept this outcome. He wouldn't allow Susan and Manuel a happy ending.

Hannah returned to her office after a meeting, when Susan called.

"How are you?" Hannah asked cheerfully.

Only a torrent of sobs answered.

"What's wrong, Susan?" Hannah asked, alarmed.

"I broke up with Henry. It's overโ€ฆ" Susan cried.

Hannah was shocked. Susan's distress fueled her concern for the baby.

"You scared me. Take it easy. You've essentially been separated since your wedding to Manuel," Hannah said.

"Hannah, do you understand? Why are you so callous?" Susan accused, finding Hannah's response cold and dismissive.

"My dear, I understand it's hard. But stop crying. It won't help the baby."

"The baby killed my love!" Susan exclaimed angrily.

"Stop it. Babies feel their mother's emotions. If it feels unwanted, it couldโ€ฆ" Hannah said, attempting to calm Susan.

"It's just flesh. How can flesh have feelings?" Susan said, fear creeping in.

"It does. My mother was very ill during her pregnancy with me. She was angry and considered giving me up. She had a hemorrhage and went to the hospital. Early treatment saved me." Hannah spoke seriously.

"Hannah, stop scaring me. Should I go to the doctor? I don't think I'm good enough for himโ€ฆ" Susan said, guilt-ridden.

"You care about your baby, right?" Hannah smiled.

Susan was speechless.

This was a manipulation.

"Susan, you've made your choice. Don't dwell on the past. Put yourself in Manuel's shoes. What you're going through is what he felt when you ran to Henry. He deserves your love. Stop complaining."

Susan couldn't respond.

"Let's look ahead," Hannah changed the subject, unwilling to push too hard. "Boy or girl?"

"A boy, maybe. I want a boy," Susan said without hesitation.

Hannah laughed. Susan's longing for the baby was evident in her hopes.

"Justine and Manuel want a girl. So I want a boy!" Susan declared fiercely.

Hannah was speechless. This was her childish friend.

"The boy will be handsome, if he takes after his father," Hannah added.

"No, he must look like me!" Susan retorted loudly.

"I disagree," Hannah stated plainly.

"Are you even on my side, Hannah?" Susan fumed.

"Just kidding," Hannah laughed. "I have a meeting. I'll call you later."

"Fine!" Susan hung up angrily.

Hannah put down her phone.

It must be wonderful to have a baby, she thought.
