Looking at Hannah's upset face, Oscar listened quietly, understanding her sentimentality and uncertainty about their future.
"I don't mean anything," Hannah said sadly. "It's just that this week has been wonderfulโcarefree, relaxing, beautiful. Away from fame and wealth, I feel at peace. I'm just a little sad it's ending so soon."
Oscar held her, whispering in her ear, a promise: "We will not become estranged."
Hannah bit her lip.
"All I do is to bring us closer," Oscar said, hugging her tightly. "I promise."
Knowing nothing lasts forever, she still trusted him. They clung to each other for a long time.
At noon, Oscar took Hannah's luggage, holding her hand as they left for the airport. Jimmy waited at their building's entrance; they took a cab together. Looking at River Town's unfamiliar streets, the sadness of parting intensified.
At the airport, Oscar accompanied Hannah to her gate. He gave her boarding pass only as she entered security. They looked at each other, wordlessly.
Hannah turned to leave with Jimmy, afraid her tears would fall. In the aisle to first class, she saw Oscar watching. Amidst the airport bustle, she saw his tall silhouette and felt a pang of his loneliness, a strange sense of dรฉjร vu, as if she'd abandoned him before.
She waved; he smiled and waved back.
"Oscar, I'll see you in Kensbury City," Hannah called.
"You will," he replied.
Her vision blurred. She finally understood why he'd always left before she woke. The parting was unbearable. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself to board. This wasn't their last meeting, but the separation was agonizing.
She almost forgot her feelings for Charles in her past life. Only a vague memory of love remained; she couldn't recall the feeling or if she'd been reluctant to leave him. Only Oscar filled her mind. It was oblivionโreplacing one love with another, filling her heart completely.
A message popped up: a voice message from Oscar, "I love you, my darling."
Next to Hannah, Jimmy heard it too. He'd never heard Oscar so gentle, almost forgetting the "bloody monster" of the dark world. He wasn't sure if this change was good, but Oscar smiled more now.
Hannah replied, "Me too." She loved him, a thousand times over.
After a five-hour flight, they returned to Kensbury City. Something felt missingโOscar. Leaving the airport, she immediately called. Despite their return, she needed to prepare for a fight; her River Town days would be a cherished memory.
She dialed a number.
"Hi, Hannah," Manuel's gentle voice answered.
"Are you busy?"
"Not really," he replied. "Susan's showering."
"Without your help?" Hannah laughed, imagining his blush.
"What's wrong?"
"Can you help me hack into Sawyer Group's finance department? I want to know if they've started allocating funds for the South Bay New Town project."
"I saw news of their infrastructure activity," Manuel mused. "Phillips Bank allocated funds Thursday. They should be investing already. I'll give you a definitive answer later."
"No rush, tomorrow's fine. Sleep early," Hannah teased. "Sleep early with Susan."
"..."
Before Hannah finished, Susan spoke. She took the phone.
"Hannah, why didn't you call me first?"
"I needed to talk to Manuel about work."
"He can't help with work! What the hell can he do?" Susan scoffed.
Hannah was speechless. Manuel was right there; Susan's bluntness was jarring.
"Susan," Hannah said seriously, "with all your free time, get to know your husband."
"Who's my husband?" Susan was furious.
"You don't know him at all."
"He's not my husband!"
"Trust me, you'll find a new world."
"No!"
"Just pay more attention to him."
"Hannah..."
"I'm tired. I'll call you later." Hannah hung up. She needed Susan to know Manuel; then, Susan's past tragedy wouldn't repeat.
