In the banquet hall, all eyes were fixed on the screen. A video of a man and woman entwined was visible to everyone. A moment of stunned silence followed, then some recognized the man as Charles, but the woman was not Hannah.
The realization hit Charles with the force of a physical blow. Panic seized him. How could this be? How had their wedding photos been replaced by this video of him with Jane Cooper?
"Turn it off! Hurry up!" Charles shouted frantically at the staff, his usual composure shattered. His outburst, delivered in an irascible tone, offended many guests. His parents, rising from their seats, added their own furious demands for the video to be stopped.
Confusion reigned. Shouts and angry voices filled the hall. Yet, the video played on, its sounds of passion echoing through the wedding venue. Lee Sawyer, revealing his true colors, joined the chorus of outrage. Loretta, equally distraught, demanded answers and the immediate termination of the video.
The shame inflicted on the Sawyer family was profound and unimaginable. Hannah, however, remained surprisingly calm on the stage. In her past life, Charles had deliberately subjected her to similar humiliations, forcing her to endure his infidelities in silence. She had borne the pain, humiliation, and despair, suppressing her emotions. Now, seeing this public exposure of Charles's hypocrisy, she felt a grim satisfaction. She wanted him to experience the shame and despair he had inflicted upon her. She watched, impassively, as he lost control.
Finally, the video was switched off, but the silence that followed only amplified the memory of what had transpired. Charles's agitation subsided, replaced by a paralyzing uncertainty. He could scarcely believe that his infidelity had been exposed so publicly. His perfect life, he feared, was irrevocably ruined. His hope now rested solely with Hannah. If she forgave him, perhaps he could salvage the situation.
Approaching Hannah, he desperately took her hands. "Hannah, listen to my explanation," he pleaded.
Her calm demeanor only heightened his anxiety and guilt. Yet, he clung to the belief that her love for him was unwavering. A well-placed apology, he reasoned, would suffice. With a fabricated air of remorse, he declared, "I was set up by Jane."
Hannah glanced around the darkened hall, her gaze seeking out Jane. She wanted to see Jane's reaction to Charles's statement.
"Yes," Charles continued, "We had drinks that night. I got drunk, she helped me...I was unconscious. I didn't know what was happening. I meant to tell you, but I was afraid of losing you. I know I'm selfish, I made a mistake, but please forgive me! Please!" He spoke rapidly, tears streaming down his face. The fear of utter ruin fueled his desperate plea.
Hannah remained silent, watching his performance with detached indifference.
"Hannah, I feel terrible," he continued. "When I woke up with Jane beside me, I wanted to die. But I can't. Who would take care of you? We've loved each other for so long, let's not let this woman ruin everything."
Still, she showed no reaction. Memories of his past cruelty, of his ultimate betrayal, flooded her mind. The retribution she had planned began to unfold.
"Hannah, please forgive me! I swear I'll treat you better. I'll never drink again, I'll never give myself the chance to make another mistake. Please, give me another chance!" His plea was almost touching in its desperation.
Finally, Hannah spoke. "Are you willing to get down on your knees and beg me?"
