Chapter 521: Conspiracy (14) Misfortune Never Comes Singly
Hannah finished speaking, catching her breath. "I'll process the video, mark their features, and send it to you. Please identify them, but don't alert them. I fear they'll silence them first."
"Okay. No problem," Manuel replied readily.
"Manuel, I'm returning to Kensbury City tomorrow morning. We need to find these two men and re-examine that financial statement. But you said it was flawless; we can't do much with it. Instead, let's speak directly to Oscar. He set up the camera and left us the video; I believe he may have left us more. You were right; Oscar is the key to clearing his name."
"Yeah," Manuel agreed, his faith in Oscar unwavering.
"Let me know as soon as you have something."
"Certainly. You too."
"Okay."
Hannah and Jimmy took the first flight back to Kensbury City the following morning. On the way from the airport, Hannah reviewed the video of Charles proposing to Sarah. Outwardly, he'd invested considerable time and effort, planning a lavish wedding.
She reclined in her seat, coldly observing Charles and Sarah's affectionate displays on the screen. She wondered if Charles had truly loved Sarah Collins in her past life. He persistently claimed to love Sarah unconditionally, even taking the Cooper family's properties to please her.
Suddenly, Hannah realized that she only felt this hatred when she actively recalled the past. Even then, her disgust remained intense; she still yearned to destroy him.
Jimmy hesitated, then said, "Your marriage to Mr. Wells also caused quite a stir."
Hannah recognized his misinterpretation; he thought she was jealous of Charles and Sarah. Absolutely not! Anyone married to Charles would ultimately be doomed! Sarah was currently useful to him; otherwise, she'd suffer a similar tragedy.
Hannah returned to the villa. Max met her, anxiously asking, "Mrs. Wells, have you found the evidence?"
"Still working on it, but we have something. Relax, Max."
"That's good. That's good," Max sighed in relief.
Hannah then called their lawyer, Josh. "Josh, I want to visit Oscar. Can you arrange it?"
"I'll try," Josh replied.
"I'd like to know if a visit is possible through regular procedures," Hannah clarified.
"Theoretically, yes. But they have ample reasons to deny us. It's uncertain."
"Then let's go public," Hannah stated bluntly. "Follow regular procedures first. I'll handle the behind-the-scenes maneuvering."
Josh was stunned, but Hannah offered no further explanation.
She hung up and contacted several media outlets with whom she had established relationships over her years in the business world. They hesitated at the prospect of exposing City Hall, weighing the risks. The potential loss from competitors covering the story, combined with Hannah's persistent encouragement, ultimately led them to agree.
Consequently, news that "City Hall appears to have deliberately obstructed Oscar's defense" spread rapidly throughout Northfield. Given the existing attention on Oscar's bribery allegations, this became an immediate trending topic.
While many condemned Oscar for bribery, the City Hall's prevention of his lawyer's visit before trial was deemed unreasonable, and the public suspected foul play. Hannah was certain this had created significant stress for City Hall.
As a result, City Hall eventually relented, approving Josh's request through official channels. Josh contacted Hannah immediately upon receiving the paperwork.
Hannah and Jimmy went straight to the detention facility. The past few days felt like an eternity to Hannah, leaving her anxiously wondering about Oscar's well-being. She was undeniably nervous.
They entered the detention house, submitted the paperwork, and endured countless procedures before finally reaching the visiting room.
"Wait!" A familiar male voice called from behind.
Hannah gritted her teeth, disgusted by the sound. She turned to see Charles approaching with several officers.
"Oh, you're back from River Town," Charles said sarcastically.
Hannah had no interest in idle chatter; she wanted to see Oscar.
"Oh? Found nothing, didn't you? You look terrible!" Charles smirked, implying her swift return meant failure.
"I look terrible because I encountered someone truly disgusting!" Hannah retorted coldly.
Charles was mildly annoyed but unconcerned. His success and pride rendered Hannah insignificant.
"Who authorized your visit to Oscar?" he demanded, rolling his eyes.
"We followed standard procedures," Hannah stated confidently.
The lawyer produced the paperwork and handed it to Charles. Charles examined it, snorted, and declared, "It states Oscar is suspected of bribery. One visit is permitted."
"Any problem?" Hannah asked indifferently.
"Of course!" Charles tossed the papers to the floor. Hannah's anger flared, and Jimmy struggled to contain his rage, barely restraining himself from assaulting Charles.
"Oscar is also suspected of rape and murder," Charles announced slowly, savoring the words.
Hannah stared, wondering what new scheme he was concocting.
"He's also a suspect in rape and murder!" Charles' voice rose, his delight palpable.
Hannah unconsciously clenched her fists. What in the world?
"Hannah," Charles said, observing her impassive expression. Her distress was evident, but less pronounced than he anticipated. He preferred to see her completely unravel.
He longed to witness Hannah's breakdown upon learning her husband was a criminal guilty of corruption, rape, and murder. He yearned for her repentance.
"Do you know whom he raped?" he asked.
Hannah stiffened, trembling slightly with anger.
Charles laughed uproariously. "He raped your cousin, Mary Cooper! Oscar is a monstrous lecher! He even violated his own wife's cousin. What a shameless man!"
