Chapter 676: Separation
Melvin doubts me and threatens my life if I refuse his deal. He'll tell Rowan, who will hunt me relentlessly. I face death or exposureโneither is acceptable," Oscar explained. Despite his efforts, the situation remained unchanged.
"Hannah, you have no choice," Oscar said, though he'd already decided for her. His hesitation stemmed from immense guilt.
Hannah simply stared, equally unsure what to do. Oscar had made it clear: she must accept Melvin's proposal. She understood; she could do nothing else.
Logically, she should empathize. Oscar was safeguarding his family's future, a far greater burden than her feelings. However, she feared going to the Capital with Melvin; it was dangerous. Oscar's loyalty to Melvin was questionable, putting her life at risk. She didn't want to die, become a hostage, or expose her unborn child to this danger.
Hannah answered with silence. "Turn off the light," she said.
Seeing tears welling in her eyes, Oscar was heartbroken by her composed silence. He'd rather she curse him than accept this fate quietly. He switched off the light, and they remained awake in the darkness.
The next morning, Oscar instructed Max to pack Hannah's belongings. Hannah watched as Oscar meticulously oversaw the packing, although Max was already thorough. Guilt drove Oscar to do more. Max was puzzled; why was Oscar taking Hannah to the Capital instead of the safer Kensbury City? He remained silent. Soon, the luggage was packed.
After lunch, they departed without speaking. Oscar finally broke the silence: "I'll send Jimmy to stay with you."
Hannah glanced at Jimmy, who quickly replied, "Ma'am, I'll protect you, even at the cost of my life."
Though Hannah disliked involving others, she didn't refuse; Jimmy's protection offered security, and she knew Oscar wouldn't relent. Further argument was pointless. She focused on avoiding conflict, knowing Oscar faced immense challenges, primarily handing her over to Melvin. Unable to offer comfort, she remained impassive.
Their car arrived at a strange manor. A man in a black suit respectfully opened the car door, but neither Hannah nor Oscar exited.
"Hannah," Oscar said, stirring mixed emotions within her. "Remember! Our lives matter most!" he stated gravely. For survival, he'd made her a hostage.
Hannah didn't respond. Sensing his lack of regret, she exited the car. She felt a fleeting touch on her arm, perhaps an illusion. She entered the manor, followed by Oscar.
Inside, Melvin sipped tea, greeting them with a smile. "I've been expecting you."
Oscar glanced at Hannah's composure, then at Melvin. "I have a request."
Melvin scoffed, "Oscar, do you think you have the right to negotiate?"
Ignoring him, Oscar continued, "I want Jimmy to stay with her."
Melvin looked at Hannah, who remained silent.
"Mr. Balderston, you promised not to harm Hannah. I need someone to ensure you keep your word."
Melvin sneered, "Oscar, don't worry. More guards are fine, as long as your loyalty is guaranteed. I won't hurt her. But try any tricks, and she won't survive, even with Jimmy."
"I understand," Oscar replied firmly.
Melvin, impatient, said, "The helicopter's waiting. Follow me."
Hannah shivered, realizing she was leaving with Melvin. Nervous, she bit her lip. Oscar held her hand tightly, and she met his gaze. He led her towards Melvin. She stared blankly at his back.
Melvin boarded first. Oscar, still holding her hand, paused. He didn't release his grip, nor did Hannah resist or reciprocate. Reluctant to leave, she let Oscar decide. She had no choice left.
After a pause, Oscar released her hand, shattering her heart. She boarded the helicopter. She knew Oscar had chosen, but her life remained uncertainโpending his confrontation with Melvin.
