Listen to this chapter:

Hannah smiled calmly.

โ€œIn fact, to attract a manโ€™s attention, itโ€™s not about what you do. Heโ€™ll be attracted if he cares about you. If he cares, heโ€™ll be nervous and attentive, even if you just sneeze. If he doesnโ€™t care, even if youโ€™re bedridden, heโ€™ll only visit out of politeness.โ€

Janetโ€™s expression darkened. Sheโ€™d heard Hannah, despite her upper-class upbringing, was considered shallow-minded. Hannah always diffused conflict peacefully, never arguing. Some called her polite and virtuous; others, frankly, called her foolish.

Hannahโ€™s current words, however, were surprisingly assertive, delivered peacefully yet laced with sarcasm.

โ€œOscar acknowledged his past mistakes and has changed. I donโ€™t care about his past; heโ€™s responsible for his future actions, not me. Iโ€™m not interested in your past relationship with him, and I wonโ€™t concern myself with it. But now that Iโ€™ve married Oscar, his future is my business. I hope, Miss Burke, youโ€™ll let go of the past.โ€

Hannah had laid her cards on the table. Janet glared, clearly stung by the sarcasm.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re proud?โ€ Janet sneered. Proud of having Oscar?

โ€œNo, but Iโ€™m satisfied,โ€ Hannah smiled. โ€œPride comes from being with someone you canโ€™t handle. Iโ€™m satisfied because I believe Oscar and I are equals. We genuinely like each other and are happy together.โ€

Janetโ€™s anger simmered. Hannah implied she wasnโ€™t worthy of Oscar.

โ€œDonโ€™t think youโ€™re safe with him. Heโ€™ll destroy anyone who threatens him. Heโ€™s cruel to anyone who crosses him! Youโ€™ll see Iโ€™m right!โ€ Janet spat, her tone furious.

A chill ran down Hannahโ€™s spine. Janetโ€™s words felt chillingly credible.

โ€œJust wait and see!โ€ Janet stormed out, her fury palpable.

Hannah pondered Janetโ€™s accusations. Could Oscar truly be so ruthless? What was his true nature, his real background?

โ€œMiss,โ€ a maid hurried in, โ€œMadam requests your presence in Karenโ€™s room. Karen wishes to apologize personally.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Hannah replied, confused yet also pondering the implications of Janet and Oscarโ€™s warnings about Karen.

She followed the maid to Karenโ€™s room. Venus, smiling warmly, opened the door.

โ€œHannah,โ€ Venus greeted.

โ€œMum.โ€

โ€œCome in.โ€

Karen lay pale and weak in bed. Seeing Hannah, she struggled to sit up, assisted by the maid.

โ€œHannah, I apologize. Pamela didnโ€™t mean to attack you. It wasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œKaren, itโ€™s alright. I know Pamela didnโ€™t mean it. It was an accident,โ€ Hannah responded gently. Regardless of Karenโ€™s true nature, Hannah maintained a polite faรงade.

โ€œBut I feel so guilty.โ€ Karenโ€™s voice was laced with sadness.

โ€œForget it,โ€ Hannah smiled. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t mentioned it, I would have forgotten.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re so kind,โ€ Karen said, turning to Venus. โ€œMum, may I speak with Hannah alone?โ€

โ€œOf course, take your time. Iโ€™m tired; Iโ€™ll rest. Call if you need anything,โ€ Venus replied, seemingly quite compliant with Karenโ€™s wishes.

Karen nodded obediently. Venus left with the maid.

Karenโ€™s voice softened. โ€œHannah, Oscar never admitted a relationship with any woman, not even Janet.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Hannah said calmly, โ€œJanet is his ex-girlfriend.โ€

โ€œYou know?โ€ Karen was surprised.

โ€œJanet told me.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re not angry?โ€

โ€œNo. Itโ€™s the past. Besides, Oscar has many ex-girlfriends. Counting them all would only frustrate me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re so kind. No wonder Oscar likes you,โ€ Karen smiled innocently.

Hannah returned the smile.

โ€œI envy you,โ€ Karen sighed. โ€œMum forbids me from dating or marrying.โ€

โ€œFalling in love or marrying isnโ€™t always good. A bad match can ruin your life,โ€ Hannah comforted her.

โ€œHearing you, I realize I have loving parents and siblings. I should be happy.โ€

โ€œCherish them,โ€ Hannah said sincerely.

โ€œYes,โ€ Karen nodded. โ€œHannah, could you pour me some water? I need to take my medicine.โ€

Hannah poured a cup of hot water and placed it beside Karen. โ€œCareful, itโ€™s hot. Let it cool.โ€

โ€œThank you, Hannah.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re family.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Karen murmured sweetly. โ€œHannah, thank you for making me feel better. Iโ€™m tired and need to rest.โ€

โ€œRest well. Iโ€™ll go.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Hannah rose to leave.

โ€œHannahโ€ฆโ€ Karen called, reaching out to pull Hannah closer. Suddenly, Karen pulled Hannahโ€™s arm, knocking over the water, scalding herself.

โ€œAh!โ€ Karen screamed, her cry bringing everyone rushing into the room to find her in agony.
