Listen to this chapter:

Hannahโ€™s expression subtly shifted. Didnโ€™t he worry about the trouble heโ€™d attract?

Charles watched him leave, sneering, โ€œWhat a useless prodigal son.โ€

Hannahโ€™s lips tightened. Luckily, Charles was proud; he wouldnโ€™t suspect sheโ€™d associate with such a man.

A grim smile touched Hannahโ€™s lips. That so-called โ€œuseless prodigal sonโ€ was unbeatable, regardless of the tricks employed.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ Hannah said, taking his arm. They entered the banquet hall.

Upon their return, Hannah was noticeably more animated. She greeted and conversed politely with passing guests, sipping wine, displaying impeccable upper-class etiquette.

Charles, still surprised by her transformation, asked, โ€œHannah, youโ€™ve changed. You were never good with strangers, and now youโ€™re a natural.โ€

It wasnโ€™t inability, but unwillingness.

She smiled. โ€œYouโ€™re too bright; I had to rise to the occasion.โ€

It was clearly praise.

Charles, delighted, said, โ€œSilly girl, didnโ€™t I strive to be bright so you could live a better life?โ€

Hannah smiled, remaining silent.

โ€œNot to mention, my heart ached seeing you struggle to socialize.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t overextend myself,โ€ Hannah said, inwardly loathing his hypocrisy.

The hall lights dimmed, signaling the start of the charity auction. A man stepped to center stage, bathed in a spotlight.

โ€œGood evening! Itโ€™s an honor to have you all here for our annual charity dinner in Kensbury City. I thank you for your attendance on behalf of the cityโ€™s charity organizationโ€ฆโ€ His polished speech captivated the audience.

After his introduction, the host swiftly presented the auction items and commenced the bidding. Murmurs rippled through the hall.

Charles turned to Hannah. โ€œIs there anything you like? I could give it to you as a wedding gift.โ€

Hannahโ€™s eyelashes fluttered. She recalled Charlesโ€™s earlier call, asking if she wanted anything. Sheโ€™d said no; heโ€™d given an item to Sandra, whoโ€™d โ€œaccidentallyโ€ revealed it, causing a city-wide stir, including the exposure of her address. Hannah had even defended Charles on social media. Now, she remembered somethingโ€”without the online exposure of Sandra's address, she couldn't have commissioned the private detective's photos.

โ€œI heard the final item is the 1980s sapphire from Princess Dianaโ€™s tiara. I saw a picture; itโ€™s beautiful,โ€ she said.

โ€œCertainly,โ€ Charles readily agreed, surprised by her interest. She was always thrifty. He'd planned to buy bracelets for Sandra, severely limiting his budget.

Hannah pretended obliviousness, focusing on the stage.

The final item was presented. The host's dramatic introduction concluded with a bang of the gavel. โ€œSapphire, starting at five million, bids in increments of one hundred thousand. The auction begins!โ€

Bids flew fast. โ€œSix million!โ€โ€ฆ โ€œSix million five hundred thousand!โ€โ€ฆ โ€œSix million eight hundred thousand!โ€โ€ฆ Then, a familiar voice boomed, โ€œTen million!โ€

It wasnโ€™t Charlesโ€™s.

Charles, about to bid, hesitated at the sudden jump. The hall gasped, all eyes turning to Oscar.

Susan, beside Hannah, exclaimed, โ€œThat guyโ€™s still as extravagant as ever!โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s just a spoiled rich kid,โ€ Charles retorted, raising his hand. โ€œEleven million!โ€ Pride wouldn't let him lose.

โ€œFifteen million!โ€ Oscar countered recklessly.

Charlesโ€™s face fell. โ€œSixteen million!โ€

โ€œTwenty million!โ€ Oscar bid again, clearly aiming to make Charles look cheap.

Charlesโ€™s budget was ten million; fifteen was his limit. He looked dreadful, the onlookers enjoying the spectacle. They didnโ€™t know the Sawyer Group was facing financial difficulties, and this auction was meant to quell rumors and secure funding. Ten million was manageable; twenty was impossible.

Charlesโ€™s body trembled; heโ€™d never felt such humiliation.

โ€œTwenty million going once!โ€ the host announced loudly.

Oscar remained composed, ignoring Charles, making him feel unworthy of consideration.

โ€œTwenty million going twice!โ€

โ€œTwenty millionโ€ฆโ€

Then, Hannahโ€™s clear voice cut through the hall: โ€œI have twenty-five million.โ€

The room erupted. Charles, astonished, whispered, โ€œOscarโ€™s doing this on purpose; donโ€™t fall for it.โ€

Hannah ignored him. Oscar was about to bid thirty million, Hannah prepared to follow. Charles abruptly pulled her hand down, in full view of everyone.

Hannah met his gaze calmly. Heโ€™d been impetuous; he couldn't afford it. He offered no explanation, believing his actions would always earn forgiveness, disregarding her feelings.

โ€œSince Mr. Wells likes it so much, weโ€™ll give it to him,โ€ Charles stated.

โ€œI hearโ€ฆโ€ Oscar interrupted, โ€œthis was Mr. Sawyerโ€™s intended wedding gift for Miss Cooper. Are you sure?โ€

Charlesโ€™s face hardened. Heโ€™d accepted the challenge, knowing it was meant to humiliate him.

Oscar smiled faintly, his voice smooth. โ€œEveryone says Mr. Sawyer adores Miss Cooper. I thought raising the price would give him a better chance to show it; it seems I was mistaken.โ€

โ€œLove isnโ€™t measured in money,โ€ Charles declared solemnly.

Oscar smiled. โ€œYouโ€™re right, Mr. Sawyer. So, are you sure you want to give it away?โ€

โ€œYes, please take it,โ€ Charles replied politely.

Oscarโ€™s gaze flickered towards Hannah. Hannah had always felt his casual demeanor hid eyes that could kill with a glance.
