Listen to this chapter:

Hannah frankly told Melvin in the villa, though depressed, believing everyone facing death felt the same. It was wise, she thought, that Oscar refused to come; it cost little, and his presence would undoubtedly result in everyone's death. She relinquished all hope of his arrival.

Staring at her impassive face, Melvin sneered, "Do you hate him?"

"No."

"That woman's soft."

"Nothing changes if he comes. It feels wrong to drag others down."

"What makes you think you'll be killed?"

"I see no reason why I wouldn't be," Hannah replied bluntly.

Melvin's face fell.

"Think about it," Hannah continued, her voice flat, as if resigned. "Oscar's appearance proves I'm still important to him. You'd kill the one he cherishes for revenge, and I'd die. If he doesn't come, it means I'm not cherished, and you'll kill me and send my body to him, as you said. It's the same outcome."

"Clever woman," Melvin grudgingly admitted.

"So," Hannah smiled, "I choose my own path, not his."

Melvin frowned, unsure of her intentions. The next second, Hannah produced a pistol Manuel had given her, concealed in her clothing. Melvin, expecting no such thing, had searched everyone but Hannah. His expression changed at the sight of the weapon. Melvin's men immediately aimed at Hannah.

"If you dare—"

Hannah knew she couldn't kill Melvin; she'd be shot first. Her aim wasn't to kill anyone else. Raising the gun, she pointed it at her head, shocking everyone present. Melvin, Manuel, and Jimmy stared nervously.

"Hannah!" Manuel shouted, urging her to calm down. Jimmy, equally agitated, tried to break free to reach her, but Melvin's men restrained him.

"Thank you for trying to save me, Manuel," Hannah said, looking at him. "It failed, but thank you for risking your life." Manuel, likely motivated by concern for Cian, had nonetheless attempted her rescue.

"Calm down, Hannah," Manuel pleaded, visibly flustered. He couldn't bear to imagine Cian's grief if Hannah died.

"I'm calm," Hannah said, offering a strained smile. "This is my choice."

Manuel frantically shook his head. He'd given her the pistol for self-defense, not suicide.

"Oscar will come! He will!" Manuel insisted, urging Hannah to trust Oscar's imminent arrival, even at the cost of his life. Oscar's apparent indifference was a calculated strategy to buy time and deceive Melvin; revealing Hannah's importance would only increase Melvin's demands. His actions were meant to save her, not abandon her.

Hannah noticed Manuel's worry, her eyes welling. She wasn't sure if it was emotion or fear. She'd known hopeless despair in her previous life before death, and she didn't want to repeat it.

Swallowing her tears, she said, "I know. That's why I choose this." She knew Oscar would come. His mission, likely completed with Cian's rescue, would now turn to her, regardless of the cost.

"I don't want to see us all killed," Hannah continued, striving for calm. Since death was inevitable, she preferred self-sacrifice to give Oscar a chance to survive. Even now, she couldn't hate Oscar; his safety was her priority.

"Hannah!" Manuel cried, "Please don't! Trust him, he'll save us!"

Hannah shook her head. She trusted Oscar, but she couldn't underestimate Melvin, a formidable foe who would have been killed by Oscar otherwise. Melvin's survival proved his cunning; he wouldn't let Oscar leave alive. He would kill Oscar, even if it meant his own death.

"I'm sorry, Manuel, Jimmy," Hannah apologized. "I can only save Oscar." She knew they would die if she did. But she had no other choice.

Jimmy's eyes reddened with anguish. He didn't care about his own survival, nor did Manuel. Nothing would change even if Cian arrived, but neither man wanted Hannah to sacrifice herself for his cousin and the Wells family.

As Hannah was about to pull the trigger, Melvin stood, "Hannah! Do you think Oscar won't come if you die?"

Hannah paused.

"He won't know until he arrives. Then I'll kill him. It's wiser to live; you might see Oscar again!" Melvin urged anxiously.

Hannah smiled. "Melvin, Oscar's your old enemy. You know what he'll do."

Melvin's face fell.

"Will he be foolish enough to come without confirming my life?" Hannah sneered.

Melvin clenched his fist. He knew.

"He won't come alone if my death is confirmed."

Then, she pulled the trigger. She only regretted leaving her baby behind. She trusted Oscar to care for her parents and family.
