Hannah slept soundly all night. Initially, she anticipated discomfort sleeping on the sofa, but to her surprise, it was far more comfortable than expected. She hadn't awakened once, nor experienced any back pain.
Then, she felt somethingโa presenceโapproaching from behind. Someone hugged her. The embrace felt natural, almostโฆ
Hannah awoke instantly. Opening her eyes, she found herself in a bed; the sofa was empty. Oscar!
The realization filled her with anger. She twisted, attempting to break free from his embrace. Her fury was intense. Last night, she and Oscar had shared a bed.
โYou better not move,โ Oscar said.
Hannah gritted her teeth. โDonโt make me lose control.โ
What a cheeky guy! she thought.
โSleep a little longer; Iโm not awake yet,โ his murmured voice brushed her ear. A sudden tingle ran through her body. Oscar was adept at flirting; he could quickly identify a woman's sensitive areas. Hannah had been sensitive about her ears since childhood; touching them caused them to redden and itch.
โOscar! Who asked you to carry me to the bed?โ Hannah demanded.
โWho said I carried you?โ he countered.
Hannah was speechless, stunned.
โYou climbed up here yourself in the middle of the night. I was scared all night, terrified I was going to lose my virginity,โ Oscar said.
โI climbed into bed?โ She had no memory of it.
โYeah. You climbed up. You were freezing, so I helped you warm up.โ
โWho asked you to warm me up?โ Hannahโs fury reignited. She had no idea how heโd warmed her.
โEven if I hadnโt helped, you burrowed into my arms. You even reached inside my clothes. Do you want to see the damage? You ripped them terribly last nightโฆโ
โShut up,โ Hannah snapped. Startled, she wasn't sure what to believe. She didn't want to know the details of the previous night.
โIโm getting up, let go of me,โ Hannah protested.
โYou smell good. I donโt want to let go.โ
โOscar.โ
โJust let me hug you for ten more minutes. Iโll let you go after ten minutes.โ
โNo.โ
โTwenty minutes.โ
โOscar!โ
โHalf an hour.โ
โTen minutes!โ Hannah compromised.
โGreat,โ Oscar said, a triumphant smile in his voice. He tightened his embrace. Hannah's back pressed against his. She was agitated, bewildered by his composure.
โItโs a normal morning reaction, itโll be fine soon,โ he said.
Hannah pretended ignorance, waiting for the ten minutes to pass. Untilโฆ
โKaren is having an attack!โ The maidโs urgent voice cut through the roomโs soundproofing, shattering the early morning quiet.
Oscar released Hannah. She quickly got up and opened the door. The corridor was in commotion. Venus, unsteady on her feet, rushed towards Karenโs room, followed by the others. They found Karen pale, struggling to breathe.
โDid you call the doctor? Did you call a doctor?โ Venus cried, terrified.
Robert, usually calm, panicked. โCall an ambulance now!โ
David frantically called the hospitalโs emergency line. The maid had already contacted Karenโs personal doctor.
Chaos reigned. Venus hugged Karen, fearing for her daughterโs life.
โWhy an attack? Didnโt the doctor say she was fine yesterday?โ Robert asked.
โPamelaโฆPamela is missing,โ the maid explained. โEvery morning, Karen plays with Pamela. This morning, she wasnโt there. We searched, butโฆwe havenโt found her. Karenโs anxiety triggered the attackโฆIโm sorry, Mr. Wells. Weโre sorry we didnโt find Pamela in time.โ
โPamela wouldnโt wander off. She must be in the villa, or stuck somewhere. Tell all the maids to search! Now!โ Robert urged.
The maid hurried off.
โWeโll go too,โ David said. โThomas, Oscar, letโs look for the cat.โ
As they left the room, the maid returned, cradling Pamela. But Pamela was dead.
โErik found her by the pool. He said sheโฆโ The maid sobbed.
They were unsure what to do.
โIs she found?โ Karenโs voice came from the room.
โNo, weโre looking,โ David lied, preferring to conceal Pamelaโs death from Karen. He planned to have the maid remove the body.
But Karen, supported by Venus, emerged from the room.
โBut I can feel Pamela is hereโฆโ
Then, she saw Pamelaโs lifeless body. Her already pale face drained further, leaving her seeming almost empty. She stared blankly.
โNo, no, itโs not true, my Pamelaโฆโ
