Listen to this chapter:

Hannah called a taxi and returned to the Wells family villa. After the shocking incident that morning, the house was empty; everyone had gone to the hospital with Karen. The maids were gathered in the hall. Hannah entered to hear hushed whispers.

โ€œMr. and Mrs. Wells were distraught when Karen had her attack, as were the young gentlemen. I donโ€™t understand Miss Hannahโ€™s ruthlessness. Pamela was so well-behaved. Even though she was close only to Miss Karen, I could never have killed her!โ€

โ€œMiss Hannah is so pretty and polite. I canโ€™t believe sheโ€™s cruel. I was shocked by Miss Karenโ€™s distress this morning, not to mention Mr. and Mrs. Wells and the young gentlemen who adore her.โ€

โ€œWhen we pulled Pamela from the pool, the kittenโ€™s wide eyes stared at us. It broke my heart. Even a small animal deserves life! I donโ€™t understand how Miss Hannah could do that.โ€

โ€œThey say high society is more refined, but their morals are worse. If I could, Iโ€™d expose Miss Hannahโ€™s crime, let everyone know what she didโ€ฆโ€

โ€œStop it,โ€ a maid hissed, pulling another back.

โ€œWhy? I wasnโ€™t finishedโ€ฆโ€

The next second, her face paled. โ€œMiss Hannah!โ€ she whispered, head bowed.

Several maids stood motionless, silent. Theyโ€™d said such terrible thingsโ€ฆ They couldnโ€™t imagine the consequences.

Hannah merely glanced at them, then walked past. A brief shock was enough; she wasn't obligated to lecture them. Furthermore, she couldn't risk being accused of bullying the maids in the Wells family's absence. Hannah wasn't controlling or paranoid, but she sensed Karen was capable of anything.

As she passed, she said to one maid, โ€œCome to my room and help me pack.โ€

โ€œYes, Miss Hannah.โ€ The maid, close to tears, was the one who'd spoken most harshly.

Back in her room, the maid trembled. โ€œHow can I help you, Miss Hannah?โ€

โ€œAnswer a few questions truthfully.โ€

โ€œYes, I will.โ€

โ€œYour name?โ€

โ€œLilah Adams, Lily.โ€

โ€œYour age?โ€

โ€œTwenty-eight.โ€

โ€œHow long have you worked for the Wells family?โ€

โ€œSince I was eighteen, ten years,โ€ Lilyโ€™s eyes welled. โ€œMiss Hannah, please donโ€™t fire me.โ€

โ€œCalm down. I havenโ€™t said that.โ€

Lily sniffled and nodded.

โ€œWho is closest to Karen?โ€ Hannah asked pointedly.

Lily, a long-time employee, knew the family well.

โ€œMiss Karen and Mrs. Wells are very close. Miss Karen relies heavily on her, and Mrs. Wells dotes on her.โ€

โ€œBesides Mrs. Wells?โ€

Lily pondered. โ€œTheyโ€™re all fairly close, I think.โ€

โ€œIs Karen close to Oscar?โ€

Lily hesitated.

โ€œTruthfully.โ€ Hannahโ€™s gaze was serious.

โ€œMaster Oscar rarely visits. They donโ€™t see much of each other. However, Karenโ€™s personal maid told me Karen is overjoyed when heโ€™s coming and dresses up.โ€

Hannah continued, โ€œIs Karen close to Pamela?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Lily nodded vigorously. โ€œMiss Karenโ€™s always with Pamela. Thatโ€™s why I was so outspoken; Miss Karen loves Pamela dearly.โ€

โ€œYou said Pamela doesnโ€™t get close to others?โ€

โ€œNo. She runs from everyone but Miss Karen.โ€

โ€œSo Karen personally cares for Pamela?โ€

โ€œNo. Miss Karen is too delicate. Pamelaโ€™s cared for by Karenโ€™s maid, Destiny. Pamela obeys Destiny. When not with Miss Karen, Destiny handles her.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s Destiny?โ€

Hannah had her target.

โ€œAfter Pamelaโ€™s accident, sheโ€™s been locked in her room, blaming herself. Sheโ€™s close to Pamela and feels terrible.โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€ Hannah nodded casually. โ€œAre there security cameras?โ€

โ€œYes. Everywhere except the bedrooms.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s the security room?โ€

โ€œIn the guardโ€™s room at the main entrance.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Hannah said, โ€œThatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œYes, Miss Hannah.โ€ Lily paused at the door.

โ€œIโ€™ll pretend I didnโ€™t hear your earlier comments if you donโ€™t repeat my questions.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Miss Hannah. I wonโ€™t say a word.โ€ Lily didnโ€™t understand Hannahโ€™s concern; the questions seemed innocuous.

Lily left. Hannah followed, heading to the security room. She instructed the guard to retrieve footage from yesterday afternoon until this morning and played it at high speed.

โ€œAlright,โ€ Hannah said abruptly.

The guard squinted at the flickering images.

Hannah thanked him and left. No evidence. Karen was far more cunning than she'd initially thought.
