Hannah called a taxi and returned to the Wells family villa. After the shocking incident that morning, the house was empty; everyone had gone to the hospital with Karen. The maids were gathered in the hall. Hannah entered to hear hushed whispers.
โMr. and Mrs. Wells were distraught when Karen had her attack, as were the young gentlemen. I donโt understand Miss Hannahโs ruthlessness. Pamela was so well-behaved. Even though she was close only to Miss Karen, I could never have killed her!โ
โMiss Hannah is so pretty and polite. I canโt believe sheโs cruel. I was shocked by Miss Karenโs distress this morning, not to mention Mr. and Mrs. Wells and the young gentlemen who adore her.โ
โWhen we pulled Pamela from the pool, the kittenโs wide eyes stared at us. It broke my heart. Even a small animal deserves life! I donโt understand how Miss Hannah could do that.โ
โThey say high society is more refined, but their morals are worse. If I could, Iโd expose Miss Hannahโs crime, let everyone know what she didโฆโ
โStop it,โ a maid hissed, pulling another back.
โWhy? I wasnโt finishedโฆโ
The next second, her face paled. โMiss Hannah!โ she whispered, head bowed.
Several maids stood motionless, silent. Theyโd said such terrible thingsโฆ They couldnโt imagine the consequences.
Hannah merely glanced at them, then walked past. A brief shock was enough; she wasn't obligated to lecture them. Furthermore, she couldn't risk being accused of bullying the maids in the Wells family's absence. Hannah wasn't controlling or paranoid, but she sensed Karen was capable of anything.
As she passed, she said to one maid, โCome to my room and help me pack.โ
โYes, Miss Hannah.โ The maid, close to tears, was the one who'd spoken most harshly.
Back in her room, the maid trembled. โHow can I help you, Miss Hannah?โ
โAnswer a few questions truthfully.โ
โYes, I will.โ
โYour name?โ
โLilah Adams, Lily.โ
โYour age?โ
โTwenty-eight.โ
โHow long have you worked for the Wells family?โ
โSince I was eighteen, ten years,โ Lilyโs eyes welled. โMiss Hannah, please donโt fire me.โ
โCalm down. I havenโt said that.โ
Lily sniffled and nodded.
โWho is closest to Karen?โ Hannah asked pointedly.
Lily, a long-time employee, knew the family well.
โMiss Karen and Mrs. Wells are very close. Miss Karen relies heavily on her, and Mrs. Wells dotes on her.โ
โBesides Mrs. Wells?โ
Lily pondered. โTheyโre all fairly close, I think.โ
โIs Karen close to Oscar?โ
Lily hesitated.
โTruthfully.โ Hannahโs gaze was serious.
โMaster Oscar rarely visits. They donโt see much of each other. However, Karenโs personal maid told me Karen is overjoyed when heโs coming and dresses up.โ
Hannah continued, โIs Karen close to Pamela?โ
โYes!โ Lily nodded vigorously. โMiss Karenโs always with Pamela. Thatโs why I was so outspoken; Miss Karen loves Pamela dearly.โ
โYou said Pamela doesnโt get close to others?โ
โNo. She runs from everyone but Miss Karen.โ
โSo Karen personally cares for Pamela?โ
โNo. Miss Karen is too delicate. Pamelaโs cared for by Karenโs maid, Destiny. Pamela obeys Destiny. When not with Miss Karen, Destiny handles her.โ
โWhereโs Destiny?โ
Hannah had her target.
โAfter Pamelaโs accident, sheโs been locked in her room, blaming herself. Sheโs close to Pamela and feels terrible.โ
โHmm.โ Hannah nodded casually. โAre there security cameras?โ
โYes. Everywhere except the bedrooms.โ
โWhereโs the security room?โ
โIn the guardโs room at the main entrance.โ
โThank you,โ Hannah said, โThatโs all.โ
โYes, Miss Hannah.โ Lily paused at the door.
โIโll pretend I didnโt hear your earlier comments if you donโt repeat my questions.โ
โDonโt worry, Miss Hannah. I wonโt say a word.โ Lily didnโt understand Hannahโs concern; the questions seemed innocuous.
Lily left. Hannah followed, heading to the security room. She instructed the guard to retrieve footage from yesterday afternoon until this morning and played it at high speed.
โAlright,โ Hannah said abruptly.
The guard squinted at the flickering images.
Hannah thanked him and left. No evidence. Karen was far more cunning than she'd initially thought.
