Chapter 765: Miguel’s Fury
Rose returned the amulet, her eyes reddening. The return of the beloved's gift was difficult to bear. Rose looked so distraught that Hannah averted her gaze; it seemed the kindest response.
"Could you please send him a message?" Rose choked out, affecting a nonchalant tone. "Tell him I have many other options."
Hannah nodded. She couldn't help but reflect. If Jimmy were present, he would surely hope he wasn't Rose's only choice. Until discovering the amulet was always with Jimmy, Hannah hadn't sensed any interest from him, only consistent avoidance of Rose.
The memory overwhelmed Hannah, bringing back the heartbreaking scene of Jimmy's final moments. "Rose," she said, "arrange a meeting with the chairman's secretary. I need to see my father immediately."
"I will," Rose replied. Despite her distress, her professionalism prevented any outward display of grief.
Rose's departure brought tears to Hannah's eyes. She fought to regain her composure. If this was what Jimmy wanted—her concealment of the truth from Rose—then so be it. Shortly after, Rose returned and knocked.
"Ms. Hannah," Rose announced, "the chairman's secretary confirms you can see him now."
Hannah rose and headed for Miguel's office, noticing Rose following. "I need to see my father alone," she said firmly. "Please attend to your own business."
"Yes," Rose replied.
Hannah proceeded to her father's office, believing it best to deliver the bad news alone. Reaching the door, however, she hesitated, considering how to soften the blow. The Cooper Group's demise, both in her past and present lives, weighed heavily. Finally, she turned to the two guards stationed behind her. "I won't jump," she declared. "Just wait here."
Escape was impossible.
The guards exchanged glances before nodding. Hannah appreciated their cooperation; at least, she still possessed a measure of freedom. Taking a deep breath, she raised her fist and knocked. The door opened, revealing her father seated behind his desk.
Miguel, seeing his daughter, asked with concern, "Hannah, why are you at the office today? Shouldn't you be with Oscar?"
He assumed she should be with Oscar. A pang of pain pierced Hannah's heart. Her father would be devastated to know her suffering at Oscar's hands.
"Are you alright, my girl?" Miguel inquired, noticing her distress.
His question steadied her. She pressed her lips together, forcing a smile. "Dad, I need to tell you something."
"You could have called," Miguel said kindly, his gaze drifting to her abdomen. "How are you feeling? Is everything alright with the baby?"
"Don't worry, everything's fine," Hannah reassured him. "The doctor confirmed it."
"That's wonderful! Your mother's been worried sick at home. She's concerned about your adjustment to the Capital and your health. But since you're married, we assumed you'd stay with Oscar. That's why we didn't urge you to return. It's a relief to see you safe and sound. I must call your mother now to prepare your favorite foods. Join us for dinner tonight."
Miguel's joy at her unexpected visit only amplified Hannah's anguish.
"Where's Oscar? Did he come with you? I must tell your mother to prepare something special for him," Miguel added.
The truth was agonizing to reveal; she didn't want to break her father's heart. She imagined his suffering upon learning the full story.
Watching him reach for the phone, she knew she had to act. With a sorrowful voice, she said, "Dad, I'm divorced."
Miguel froze, his expression unbelieving.
"We've separated, officially," Hannah repeated.
"Divorced?" Miguel asked again, incredulous.
"Yes," Hannah confirmed. "Just a week ago."
"Why?" Miguel demanded, his voice laced with fury. "What on earth happened? Why didn't you tell us? Did he do something to you? Or did he abandon you because he's becoming Commander-in-Chief?"
"Both. But I think it was primarily to forge an alliance with the Collins family to secure his position. Marrying Rowan Collins's daughter was the only way to win their trust."
Hannah's explanation ignited Miguel's anger. He unleashed his fury on his desk. He never imagined Oscar capable of such behavior.
Previously, when they'd heard rumors of Oscar and Lilian Collins, neither Michelle nor he had believed a word. They'd dismissed it as nonsense, firmly believing Oscar wouldn't abandon their daughter. They were wrong. His anger intensified with each passing thought.
Hannah saw her father's fury and his underlying concern for her. She approached and comforted him. "Dad, it's okay. I understand. And I've accepted it. Love isn't everything. It doesn't matter as much as you think."
Miguel studied her. He knew Hannah's kind and compassionate nature from childhood. Even in her suffering, she sought to comfort others.
"What about you and the baby?" Miguel asked, his anger reignited by the thought of her pregnancy.
"Regarding the baby," Hannah said, "abortion is risky at five months. After discussing it, we decided to carry the pregnancy to term."
"Damn," Miguel swore. It was indeed too late for an abortion.
"This baby will be a Cooper," Miguel declared firmly. "And I won't allow Oscar anywhere near him."
Hannah found herself in a quandary. She hesitated before revealing the threat of the Cooper Group's acquisition.
"Dad, that's not the point. I loved him, but I can't force him to love me back. And I'm not as weak as you think. I've accepted the breakup. But I do regret that my marital failure might affect you and Mom."
"Affect? What a ridiculous word. You're my daughter..."
"Oscar will acquire the Cooper Group," Hannah stated, each word heavy with distress.
